CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDIODATI
And behold, a sedition rose up in Ephraim. Then, while passing by toward the north, they said to Jephthah: “When you were going to fight against the sons of Ammon, why were you unwilling to summon us, so that we might go with you? Therefore, we will burn down your house.”1 OR gli Efraimiti, adunatisi a grida, passarono verso il Settentrione, e dissero a Iefte: Perchè sei tu passato per combattere contro a’ figliuoli di Ammon, e non ci hai chiamati per andar teco? noi bruceremo col fuoco la tua casa, e te insieme.
And he answered them: “I and my people were in a great conflict against the sons of Ammon. And I called you, so that you might offer assistance to me. And you were not willing to do so.2 E Iefte disse loro: Il mio popolo ed io abbiamo avuta gran contesa co’ figliuoli di Ammon; ed io v’ho chiamati, ma voi non mi avete liberato dalle lor mani.
And discerning this, I put my life in my own hands, and I crossed to the sons of Ammon, and the Lord delivered them into my hands. What am I guilty of, that you would rise up in battle against me?”3 Laonde, veggendo che voi non mi liberavate, io ho messa la mia vita nella palma della mia mano, e son passato agli Ammoniti; e il Signore me li ha dati nelle mani; perchè dunque siete voi oggi saliti a me, per farmi guerra?
And so, calling to himself all the men of Gilead, he fought against Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck down Ephraim, because he had said, “Gilead is a fugitive from Ephraim, and he lives in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.”4 E Iefte adunò tutti i Galaaditi, e combattè contro ad Efraim; e i Galaaditi percossero Efraim; perciocchè dicevano: Voi siete degli scampati di Efraim; Galaad è in mezzo di Efraim e di Manasse.
And the Gileadites occupied the fords of the Jordan, along which Ephraim was to return. And when anyone from the number of Ephraim had arrived, fleeing, and had said, “I beg that you permit me to pass,” the Gileadites would say to him, “Could you be an Ephraimite?” And if he said, “I am not,”5 E i Galaaditi occuparono i passi del Giordano a que’ di Efraim; e quando alcuno di que’ di Efraim che scampavano diceva: Lascia ch’io passi, i Galaaditi gli dicevano: Sei tu di Efraim? E s’egli diceva:
they would ask him, then say ‘Shibboleth,’ which is translated as ‘ear of grain.’ But he would answer ‘Sibboleth,’ not being able to express the word for an ear of grain in the same letters. And immediately apprehending him, they would cut his throat, at the same crossing point of the Jordan. And in that time of Ephraim, forty-two thousand fell.6 No, i Galaaditi gli dicevano: Deh! di’ Scibbolet; ma egli diceva: Sibbolet; e non accertava a profferir dirittamente. Ed essi lo prendevano, e lo scannavano a’ passi del Giordano. Così in quel tempo caddero morti di Efraim quarantaduemila uomini.
And so Jephthah, the Gileadite, judged Israel for six years. And he died, and he was buried in his city in Gilead.7 E Iefte Galaadita giudicò Israele sei anni; poi morì, e fu seppellito nella città di Galaad
After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.8 E, DOPO lui, Ibsan, da Bet-lehem, giudicò Israele.
He had thirty sons, and the same number of daughters, whom he sent away to be given to husbands. And he accepted wives for his sons of the same number, bringing them into his house. And he judged Israel for seven years.9 Ed ebbe trenta figliuoli, e mandò fuori trenta figliuole a marito, a menò trenta fanciulle di fuori a’ suoi figliuoli per mogli; e giudicò Israele sett’anni.
And he died, and he was buried in Bethlehem.10 Poi Ibsan morì, e fu seppellito in Bet-lehem.
After him succeeded Elon, a Zebulunite. And he judged Israel for ten years.11 E, dopo lui, Elon Zabulonita fu Giudice d’Israele; e giudicò Israele dieci anni.
And he died, and he was buried in Zebulun.12 Poi Elon Zabulonita morì, e fu seppellito in Aialon, nel paese di Zabulon.
After him, Abdon, the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.13 E, dopo lui, Abdon, figliuolo di Hillel, Piratonita, giudicò Israele.
And he had forty sons, and from them thirty grandsons, all riding upon seventy young donkeys. And he judged Israel for eight years.14 Ed ebbe quaranta figliuoli, e trenta figliuoli di figliuoli, i quali cavalcavano settant’asinelli; e giudicò Israele ott’anni.
And he died, and he was buried at Pirathon, in the land of Ephraim, on the mountain of Amalek.15 Poi Abdon, figliuolo di Hillel, Piratonita, morì, e fu seppellito in Piraton, nel paese di Efraim, nel monte degli Amalechiti
