After the death of Joshua, the sons of Israel consulted the Lord, saying, “Who will ascend before us, against the Canaanite, and who will be the commander of the war?”1 Now after Joshua's death, the Israelites consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Which of us is to march on theCanaanites first, to make war on them?'
And the Lord said: “Judah shall ascend. Behold, I have delivered the land into his hands.”2 And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to march on them first; I am delivering the country into his hands.'
And Judah said to his brother Simeon, “Go up with me to my lot, and fight against the Canaanite, so that I also may go forth with you to your lot.” And Simeon went with him.3 Judah then said to his brother Simeon, 'March with me into the territory al otted to me; we shall makewar on the Canaanites, and then I in my turn shal march into your territory with you.' And Simeon marched withhim.
And Judah went up, and the Lord delivered the Canaanite, as well as the Perizzite, into their hands. And they struck down ten thousand of the men at Bezek.4 So Judah marched on them, and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, andthey defeated them at Bezek-ten thousand of them!
And they found Adonibezek at Bezek, and they fought against him, and they struck down the Canaanite and the Perizzite.5 At Bezek they came upon Adoni-Bezek; they joined battle with him and defeated the Canaanites andPerizzites.
Then Adonibezek fled. And they pursued him and captured him, and they cut off the ends of his hands and feet.6 Adoni-Bezek took to flight, but they chased and captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
And Adonibezek said: “Seventy kings, with the ends of their hands and feet amputated, have been gathering the remnants of food under my table. Just as I have done, so has God repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.7 Adoni-Bezek said, 'Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up the crumbsunder my table. As I did, God does to me.' He was taken to Jerusalem, and there he died.
Then the sons of Judah, besieging Jerusalem, seized it. And they struck it with edge of the sword, delivering the entire city to be burned.8 (The sons of Judah attacked Jerusalem and took it: they put its people to the sword and set fire to thecity.)
And afterward, descending, they fought against the Canaanites who were living in the mountains, and in the south, and in the plains.9 After this the sons of Judah went down to make war on the Canaanites who were living in the highlands, the Negeb and the lowlands.
And Judah, going forth against the Canaanites who were living at Hebron, (the name of which from antiquity was Kiriath-Arba) struck down Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.10 Judah next marched on the Canaanites living in Hebron -- the name of Hebron in olden days wasKiriath-Arba -- and beat Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.
And continuing on from there, he went to the inhabitants of Debir, the old name of which was Kiriath-Sepher, that is, the City of Letters.11 From there, he marched on the inhabitants of Debir -- the name of Debir in olden days was Kiriath-Sepher.
And Caleb said, “Whoever will strike Kiriath-Sepher, and will lay waste to it, I will give to him my daughter Achsah as wife.”12 Caleb said, 'To the man who conquers and captures Kiriath-Sepher, I shal give my daughter Achsahas wife.'
And when Othniel, the son of Kenaz, a younger brother of Caleb, had seized it, he gave his daughter Achsah to him in marriage.13 The man who captured it was Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, who gave him hisdaughter Achsah as wife.
And as she was traveling on a journey, her husband admonished her, so that she would request a field from her father. And since she had sighed while sitting on her donkey, Caleb said to her, “What is it?”14 When she arrived, he urged her to ask her father for arable land, but when she alighted from thedonkey and Caleb asked her, 'What is the matter?'
But she responded: “Give a blessing to me. For you have given me a dry land. Also give a watered land.” Therefore, Caleb gave to her the upper watered land and the lower watered land.15 she said to him, 'Grant me a blessing! As the land you have given me is the Negeb, give me springs ofwater, too!' So Caleb gave her what she wanted: the upper springs and the lower springs.
Now the sons of the Kenite, the relative of Moses, ascended from the City of Palms, with the sons of Judah, into the wilderness of his lot, which is toward the south of Arad. And they lived with him.16 The sons of Hobab the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, marched up with the sons of Judah from theCity of Palm Trees into the desert of Judah lying in the Negeb of Arad, where they went and settled among thepeople.
Then Judah went out with his brother Simeon, and together they struck the Canaanites who were living at Zephath, and they put them to death. And the name of the city was called Hormah, that is, Anathema.17 Judah then set out with his brother Simeon. They beat the Canaanites who lived in Zephath anddelivered it over to the curse of destruction; hence the town was given the name of Hormah.
And Judah seized Gaza, with its parts, and Ashkelon as well as Ekron, with their borders.18 Judah then captured Gaza and its territory, Ashkelon and its territory, Ekron and its territory.AndYahweh was with Judah, who made himself master of the highlands;
And the Lord was with Judah, and he possessed the mountains. But he was not able to wipe out the inhabitants of the valley. For they abounded with chariots armed with scythes.19 he could not, however, dispossess the inhabitants of the plain, since they had iron chariots.
And just as Moses had said, they gave Hebron to Caleb, who destroyed out of it the three sons of Anak.20 As Moses had directed, Hebron was given to Caleb, and he drove the three sons of Anak out of it.
But the sons of Benjamin did not wipe out the Jebusite inhabitants of Jerusalem. And the Jebusite has lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem, even to the present day.21 As regards the Jebusites living in Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin did not dispossess them, and theJebusites have been living in Jerusalem with the sons of Benjamin ever since.
The house of Joseph also ascended against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.22 Similarly, the House of Joseph marched on Bethel, and Yahweh was with them.
For when they were besieging the city, which was previously called Luz,23 The House of Joseph made a reconnaissance of Bethel. (In olden days, the name of the town wasLuz.)
they saw a man departing from the city, and they said to him, “Reveal to us the entrance to the city, and we will act with mercy toward you.”24 The scouts saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, 'Show us how to get into the town andwe shal show you faithful love.'
And when he had revealed it to them, they struck the city with the edge of the sword. But that man, and all his relatives, they released.25 And when he had shown them a way into the town, they put the town to the sword but let the man andhis whole clan go.
And having been sent away, he went out to the land of the Hittites, and he built a city there, and he called it Luz. And so it is called, even to the present day.26 The man went off to the country of the Hittites and built a town which he called Luz; and that has been its name ever since.
Likewise, Manasseh did not destroy Bethshean and Taanach, with their villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor and Ibleam and Megiddo, with their villages. And the Canaanite began to live with them.27 Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-Shean and its dependencies, nor Taanach and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependencies, nor theinhabitants of Megiddo and its dependencies; in those parts the Canaanites held their ground.
Then, after Israel had grown strong, he made them tributaries, but he was not willing to destroy them.28 But when the Israelites became stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour, althoughthey did not dispossess them.
And now Ephraim did not put to death the Canaanite, who was living at Gezer; instead, he lived with him.29 Nor did Ephraim dispossess the Canaanites living in Gezer; thus, the Canaanites went on living inGezer with him.
Zebulun did not wipe out the inhabitants of Kitron and of Nahalal. Instead, the Canaanite lived in their midst and became their tributary.30 Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron or of Nahalol. The Canaanites lived on withZebulun but were subjected to forced labour.
Likewise, Asher did not destroy the inhabitants of Acco and Sidon, Ahlab and Achzib, and Helbah, and Aphik, and Rehob.31 Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Acco, nor those of Sidon, of Mahalab, of Achzib, of Helbah,of Aphek or of Rehob.
And he lived in the midst of the Canaanites, the inhabitants of that land, for he did not put them to death.32 So the Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the country, not having dispossessed them.
Naphtali also did not wipe out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Bethanath. And he lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land. And the Beth-shemeshites and Bethanathites were tributaries to him.33 Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh or of Beth-Anath; they settled among theCanaanite inhabitants of the country, but the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh and of Beth-Anath were subjected toforced labour for them.
And the Amorite hemmed in the sons of Dan on the mountain, and did not give them a place, so that they might descend to the flatlands.34 The Amorites drove the Danites back into the highlands and would not let them come down into theplain.
And he lived on the mountain at Har-heres, which is translated as ‘resembling brick,’ and at Aijalon and Sha-alabbin. But the hand of the house of Joseph was very heavy, and he became a tributary to him.35 The Amorites held their ground at Har -- Heres and Shaalbim, but when the hand of the House ofJoseph grew heavier, they were subjected to forced labour. (
Now the border of the Amorite was from the Ascent of the Scorpion, to the Rock and the higher places.36 The territory of the Edomites begins at the Ascent of Scorpions, runs to the Rock and continues onupwards.)
