1 Similarly also, wives should be subject to their husbands, so that, even if some do not believe the Word, they may benefit without the Word, through the behavior of these wives,	1 También las mujeres respeten a su marido, para que si alguno de ellos se resiste a creer en la Palabra, sea convencido sin palabra por la conducta de su mujer,
2 as they consider with fear your chaste behavior.	2 al ver su vida casta y respetuosa.
3 For you, there should be no unnecessary adornment of the hair, or surrounding with gold, or the wearing of ornate clothing.	3 Que su elegancia no sea el adorno exterior –consistente en peinados rebuscados, alhajas de oro y vestidos lujosos–
4 Instead, you should be a hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptibility of a quiet and a meek spirit, rich in the sight of God.	4 sino la actitud interior del corazón, el adorno incorruptible de un espíritu dulce y sereno. Esto le vale a los ojos de Dios.
5 For in this way, in past times also, holy women adorned themselves, hoping in God, being subject to their own husbands.	5 Así se adornaban en otro tiempo las santas mujeres que tenían su esperanza puesta en Dios y respetaban a sus maridos,
6 For so Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You are her daughters, well-behaved and unafraid of any disturbance.	6 como por ejemplo, Sara, que obedecía a Abraham y lo llamaba su señor. Ahora ustedes han llegado a ser sus hijas, haciendo el bien y no dejándose inquietar por ninguna clase de temor.
7 Similarly, you husbands should live with them in accord with knowledge, bestowing honor on the female as the weaker vessel and as co-heirs of the life of grace, so that your prayers may not be hindered.	7 Los maridos, a su vez, comprendan que deben compartir su vida con un ser más débil, como es la mujer: trátenla con el respeto debido a coherederas de la gracia que da la Vida. De esa manera, nada será obstáculo para la oración.
8 And finally, may you all be of one mind: compassionate, loving brotherhood, merciful, meek, humble,	8 En fin, vivan todos unidos, compartan las preocupaciones de los demás, ámense como hermanos, sean misericordiosos y humildes.
9 not repaying evil with evil, nor slander with slander, but, to the contrary, repaying with blessings. For to this you have been called, so that you may possess the inheritance of a blessing.	9 No devuelvan mal por mal, ni injuria por injuria: al contrario, retribuyan con bendiciones, porque ustedes mismos están llamados a heredar una bendición.
10 For whoever wants to love life and to see good days should restrain his tongue from evil, and his lips, so that they utter no deceit.	10 "El que ama la vida y desea gozar de días felices, guarde su lengua del mal y sus labios de palabras mentirosas;
11 Let him turn away from evil, and do good. Let him seek peace, and pursue it.	11 apártese del mal y practique el bien; busque la paz y siga tras ella.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are upon the just, and his ears are with their prayers, but the countenance of the Lord is upon those who do evil.	12 Porque los ojos del Señor miran al justo y sus oídos están atentos a su plegaria, pero él rechaza a los que hacen el mal".
13 And who is it who can harm you, if you are zealous in what is good?	13 ¿Quién puede hacerles daño si se dedican a practicar el bien?
14 And yet, even when you suffer something for the sake of justice, you are blessed. So then, do not be afraid with their fear, and do not be disturbed.	14 Dichosos ustedes, si tienen que sufrir por la justicia. No teman ni se inquieten;
15 But sanctify Christ the Lord in your hearts, being always ready to give an explanation to all who ask you the reason for that hope which is in you.	15 por el contrario, glorifiquen en sus corazones a Cristo, el Señor. Estén siempre dispuestos a defenderse delante de cualquiera que les pida razón de la esperanza que ustedes tienen.
16 But do so with meekness and fear, having a good conscience, so that, in whatever matter they may slander you, they shall be confounded, since they falsely accuse your good behavior in Christ.	16 Pero háganlo con suavidad y respeto, y con tranquilidad de conciencia. Así se avergonzarán de sus calumnias todos aquellos que los difaman, porque ustedes se comportan como servidores de Cristo.
17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if it is the will of God, than for doing evil.	17 Es preferible sufrir haciendo el bien, si esta es la voluntad de Dios, que haciendo el mal.
18 For Christ also died once for our sins, the Just One on behalf of the unjust, so that he might offer us to God, having died, certainly, in the flesh, but having been enlivened by the Spirit.	18 Cristo murió una vez por nuestros pecados –siendo justo, padeció por la injusticia– para llevarnos a Dios. Entregado a la muerte en su carne, fue vivificado en el Espíritu.
19 And in the Spirit, he preached to those who were in prison, going to those souls	19 Y entonces fue a hacer su anuncio a los espíritus que estaban prisioneros,
20 who had been unbelieving in past times, while they waited for the patience of God, as in the days of Noah, when the ark was being built. In that ark, a few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water.	20 a los que se resistieron a creer cuando Dios esperaba pacientemente, en los días en que Noé construía el arca. En ella, unos pocos –ocho en total– se salvaron a través del agua.
21 And now you also are saved, in a similar manner, by baptism, not by the testimony of sordid flesh, but by the examination of a good conscience in God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.	21 Todo esto es figura del bautismo, por el que ahora ustedes son salvados, el cual no consiste en la supresión de una mancha corporal, sino que es el compromiso con Dios de una conciencia pura, por la resurrección de Jesucristo,
22 He is at the right hand of God, devouring death, so that we may be made heirs to eternal life. And since he has journeyed to heaven, the Angels and powers and virtues are subject to him.	22 que está a la derecha de Dios, después de subir al cielo y de habérsele sometido los Angeles, las Dominaciones y las Potestades.
