1 Thessalonians 2

1 For you yourselves know, brothers, that our acceptance among you was not empty.	1 Vous savez, frères, que notre passage chez vous n’a pas été sans profit.
2 Instead, having previously suffered and been treated shamefully, as you know, at Philippi, we had confidence in our God, so as to speak the Gospel of God to you with much solicitude.	2 Nous venions juste d’être bien éprouvés et maltraités à Philippes, comme vous le savez, mais, comptant sur Dieu, nous avons pris le risque de vous annoncer l’Évangile de Dieu malgré une forte opposition.
3 For our exhortation was not in error, nor from impurity, nor with deception.	3 Nous ne vous avons pas fait entendre la voix de l’erreur ou de l’impureté, et nous n’avons rien déguisé.
4 But, just as we have been tested by God, so that the Gospel would be entrusted to us, so also did we speak, not so as to please men, but rather to please God, who tests our hearts.	4 Puisque c’est Dieu qui nous a examinés et retenus pour nous confier l’Évangile, nous le prêchons, non pour plaire aux hommes, mais à Dieu qui examine nos cœurs.
5 And neither did we, at any time, become flattering in speech, as you know, nor did we seek an opportunity for avarice, as God is witness.	5 Pas un moment nous ne vous avons flattés, comme vous le savez; et nous n’avons pas cherché l’argent - Dieu en est témoin -
6 Nor did we seek the glory of men, neither from you, nor from others.	6 ou les honneurs, que cela vienne de vous ou d’autres personnes.
7 And although we could have been a burden to you, as Apostles of Christ, instead we became like little ones in your midst, like a nurse cherishing her children.	7 Comme apôtres du Christ, nous aurions pu nous faire servir; mais nous nous sommes faits tout petits au milieu de vous, comme la maman qui joue avec son bébé.
8 So desirous were we for you that we were willing to hand over to you, not only the Gospel of God, but even our own souls. For you have become most beloved to us.	8 Nous tenions tellement à vous que nous étions prêts à vous donner, non seulement l’Évangile de Dieu, mais notre propre vie. C’est que vous nous étiez vraiment chers.
9 For you remember, brothers, our hardship and weariness. We preached the Gospel of God among you, working night and day, so that we would not be burdensome to any of you.	9 Rappelez-vous, frères, nos fatigues et nos soucis. Tout en vous prêchant l’Évangile de Dieu, nous avons travaillé de nuit et de jour pour n’être à la charge d’aucun d’entre vous.
10 You are witnesses, as is God, of how holy and just and blameless we were with you who have believed.	10 Vous êtes témoins, et Dieu aussi, que nous avons été vraiment saints, droits et sans reproche avec vous tous qui avez cru.
11 And you know the manner, with each one of you, like a father with his sons,	11 Vous savez comment nous avons suivi chacun de vous, comme un père ses enfants.
12 in which we were pleading with you and consoling you, bearing witness, so that you would walk in a manner worthy of God, who has called you into his kingdom and glory.	12 Nous vous avons encouragés et instruits, et nous avons insisté pour que votre façon de vivre soit digne du Dieu qui vous a appelés à son Royaume et à sa Gloire.
13 For this reason also, we give thanks to God without ceasing: because, when you had accepted from us the Word of the hearing of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but (as it truly is) as the Word of God, who is working in you who have believed.	13 Justement, nous rendons grâce à Dieu constamment parce que, après avoir entendu et reçu de nous la parole de Dieu, vous l’avez prise, non pour une parole humaine, mais pour ce qu’elle est vraiment: une parole de Dieu. Et elle est active parmi vous qui croyez.
14 For you, brothers, have become imitators of the churches of God which are at Judea, in Christ Jesus. For you, too, have suffered the same things from your fellow countrymen as they have suffered from the Jews,	14 Dans le Christ, frères, vous avez suivi en tout les Églises de Dieu en Judée: vous avez été persécutés par vos frères de race, tout comme elles l’ont été par les Juifs.
15 who also killed both the Lord Jesus, and the Prophets, and who have persecuted us. But they do not please God, and so they are adversaries to all men.	15 Ce sont eux qui ont tué Jésus et les prophètes, et maintenant ils nous poursuivent. Ils ne plaisent sûrement pas à Dieu, et ils se font les ennemis de tous les hommes,
16 They prohibit us to speak to the Gentiles, so that they may be saved, and thus do they continually add to their own sins. But the wrath of God will overtake them in the very end.	16 quand ils nous empêchent de prêcher aux païens pour qu’ils soient sauvés. Ils font tout pour mettre le comble à leurs péchés, mais à la fin, la Colère va se décharger sur eux.
17 And we, brothers, having been deprived of you for a short time, in sight, but not in heart, have hurried all the more to see your face, with a great desire.	17 Frères, comme nous nous trouvions privés de vous depuis un bon moment, de corps mais non de cœur, nous avions un grand désir de revoir vos visages et nous en cherchions le moyen.
18 For we wanted to come to you, (indeed, I, Paul, attempted to do so once, and then again,) but Satan impeded us.	18 Nous avons voulu aller chez vous - pour moi, Paul, ç’a été plus d’une fois - mais Satan nous a mis des obstacles.
19 For what is our hope, and our joy, and our crown of glory? Is it not you, before our Lord Jesus Christ at his return?	19 Car, où sont nos espoirs et qui est notre joie sinon vous? Et qui sera notre couronne et notre orgueil en présence du Seigneur Jésus le jour où il nous visitera?
20 For you are our glory and our joy.	20 C’est vous qui êtes notre gloire et notre joie.
