1 “Noble brothers and fathers, listen to the explanation that I now give to you.”	1 “Frères et pères, écoutez un peu, laissez-moi m’expliquer.”
2 And when they heard him speaking to them in the Hebrew language, they offered a greater silence.	2 Quand ils ont vu qu’il leur parlait en hébreu, ils se sont tenus plus tranquilles.
3 And he said: “I am a Jewish man, born at Tarsus in Cilicia, but raised in this city beside the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the truth of the law of the fathers, zealous for the law, just as all of you also are to this day.	3 Il a alors continué: "Je suis né Juif, je suis de Tarse en Cilicie mais j’ai été éduqué ici dans cette ville. Avec Gamaliel comme maître, j’ai été instruit de la Loi de nos pères de la façon la plus correcte et j’étais fanatique pour Dieu comme vous l’êtes tous aujourd’hui.
4 I persecuted this Way, even unto death, binding and delivering into custody both men and women,	4 “J’ai donc poursuivi à mort ce Chemin: je faisais arrêter et mettre en prison les femmes comme les hommes.
5 just as the high priest and all those greater by birth bear witness to me. Having received letters from them to the brothers, I journeyed to Damascus, so that I might lead them bound from there to Jerusalem, so that they might be punished.	5 Le grand prêtre et tout le conseil des Anciens peuvent le dire: avec des lettres de pouvoir qu’ils m’ont données, je suis parti chez nos frères de Damas. Je devais faire arrêter ceux du Chemin qui s’y trouvaient et les ramener à Jérusalem pour y recevoir leur condamnation.
6 But it happened that, as I was traveling and was approaching Damascus at midday, suddenly from heaven a great light shone around me.	6 “J’étais sur la route et déjà proche de Damas quand, aux environs de midi, tout d’un coup il y a eu comme un éclair, une lumière qui du ciel se projetait sur moi.
7 And falling to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’	7 Je suis tombé à terre et j’ai entendu une voix qui me disait: ‘Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?’
8 And I responded, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.’	8 “J’ai répondu: ‘Qui es-tu, Seigneur?’ et lui m’a dit: ‘Je suis Jésus de Nazareth que tu persécutes.’
9 And those who were with me, indeed, saw the light, but they did not hear the voice of him who was speaking with me.	9 “Ceux qui m’accompagnaient avaient vu la lumière, mais ils n’entendaient pas celui qui me parlait.
10 And I said, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ Then the Lord said to me: ‘Rise up, and go to Damascus. And there, you shall be told all that you must do.’	10 Alors j’ai dit: ‘Seigneur, que dois-je faire?’ Le Seigneur m’a répondu: ‘Relève-toi, va à Damas et là on te dira ce que tu dois faire, comme c’est déjà prévu pour toi.’
11 And since I could not see, because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by my companions, and I went to Damascus.	11 “La lumière avait été telle que je restais sans voir; mes compagnons m’ont donc pris par la main jusqu’à l’arrivée à Damas.
12 Then a certain Ananias, a man in accord with the law, having the testimony of all the Jews who were living there,	12 Il y avait là un certain Ananias, un homme très observant de la Loi: tous les Juifs installés là-bas en disent du bien.
13 drawing near to me and standing close by, said to me, ‘Brother Saul, see!’ And in that same hour, I looked upon him.	13 Il est venu me trouver et il m’a dit: ‘Frère Saul, recouvre la vue!’ Au même moment j’ai pu voir.
14 But he said: ‘The God of our fathers has preordained you, so that you would come to know his will and would see the Just One, and would hear the voice from his mouth.	14 Il m’a dit alors: ‘Le Dieu de nos pères t’a choisi d’avance pour connaître ses desseins, pour voir le Juste et entendre sa propre voix.
15 For you shall be his witness to all men about those things which you have seen and heard.	15 Avec tout ce que tu as vu et entendu, tu lui rendras témoignage devant les personnes les plus diverses.
16 And now, why do you delay? Rise up, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, by invoking his name.’	16 Que te reste-t-il à faire? Reçois le baptême et invoque son Nom: ainsi tu seras lavé de tes péchés.’
17 Then it happened that, when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, a mental stupor came over me,	17 “Après mon retour à Jérusalem, un jour où je priais au Temple, j’ai eu une extase.
18 and I saw him saying to me: ‘Hurry! Depart quickly from Jerusalem! For they will not accept your testimony about me.’	18 Je l’ai vu qui me disait: ‘N’attends pas davantage, sors au plus tôt de Jérusalem, car ils ne feront aucun cas de ton témoignage à mon sujet.’
19 And I said: ‘Lord, they know that I am beating and enclosing in prison, throughout every synagogue, those who have believed in you.	19 “J’ai répondu: ‘Seigneur, ils savent bien que j’emprisonnais ceux qui croient en toi et que je les faisais flageller dans les synagogues.
20 And when the blood of your witness Stephen was poured out, I stood nearby and was consenting, and I watched over the garments of those who put him to death.’	20 Et quand on a versé le sang d’Étienne, ton martyr, j’étais présent et j’étais d’accord. Même je gardais les vêtements de ceux qui le mettaient à mort.’
21 And he said to me, ‘Go forth. For I am sending you to far away nations.’ ”	21 Mais le Seigneur m’a dit: ‘Pars, je t’envoie au loin, vers les païens!’… ”
22 Now they were listening to him, until this word, and then they lifted up their voice, saying: “Take this kind away from the earth! For it is not fitting for him to live!”	22 Jusqu’à cette dernière phrase on avait écouté Paul. Mais alors ils se mirent à crier: "Débarrassez le monde de cet individu, il n’a pas le droit de vivre!”
23 And while they were shouting, and tossing aside their garments, and casting dust into the air,	23 Ils criaient, ils déchiraient leurs vêtements et soulevaient des nuages de poussière.
24 the tribune ordered him to be brought into the fortress, and to be scourged and tortured, in order to discover the reason that they were crying out in this way against him.	24 Le commandant ordonna de faire passer Paul dans la forteresse, puis il demanda de le flageller jusqu’à ce qu’on sache pourquoi on criait tellement contre lui.
25 And when they had tied him with straps, Paul said to the centurion who was standing near him, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman and has not been condemned?”	25 Mais quand on voulut lui enlever ses vêtements, Paul dit au centurion: "Avez-vous le droit de flageller un citoyen romain tant qu’il n’a pas été jugé?”
26 Upon hearing this, the centurion went to the tribune and reported it to him, saying: “What do you intend to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.”	26 Le centurion alla aussitôt trouver le commandant pour lui dire: "Il est romain, qu’est-ce que tu veux faire?”
27 And the tribune, approaching, said to him: “Tell me. Are you a Roman?” So he said, “Yes.”	27 Le commandant s’approcha de Paul: "Dis-moi: tu es citoyen romain?” Paul répondit: "Oui.”
28 And the tribune responded, “I obtained this citizenship at great cost.” And Paul said, “But I was born to it.”	28 Le commandant fit cette réflexion: "J’ai dû payer cher pour acheter ce titre.” Paul lui dit: "Moi, je le suis de naissance.”
29 Therefore, those who were going to torture him, immediately withdrew from him. The tribune was similarly afraid, after he realized that he was a Roman citizen, for he had bound him.	29 Aussitôt se retirèrent les soldats qui devaient faire avouer Paul, et le commandant eut peur en pensant qu’il avait passé des chaînes à un citoyen romain.
30 But on the next day, wanting to discover more diligently what the reason was that he was accused by the Jews, he released him, and he ordered the priests to convene, with the entire council. And, producing Paul, he stationed him among them.	30 Le lendemain il fit délier Paul. Il voulait savoir avec certitude de quoi les Juifs l’accusaient. Il demanda aux grands prêtres de se réunir avec tout le Sanhédrin, et il fit descendre Paul pour qu’il s’explique devant eux.
