1 ALEPH. I am a man watching my own poverty by the rod of his indignation.	1 (Alef)Io sono l’uomo che ha provato la miseria sotto la sferza della sua ira.
2 ALEPH. He has driven me and led me into darkness, and not into light.	2 (Alef) Egli mi ha guidato, mi ha fatto camminare nelle tenebre e non nella luce.
3 ALEPH. Against me only, he has turned and turned again his hand, all day long.	3 (Alef) Sì, contro di me egli volge e rivolge la sua mano tutto il giorno.
4 BETH. My skin and my flesh, he has made old; he has crushed my bones.	4 (Bet) Egli ha consumato la mia carne e la mia pelle, ha rotto le mie ossa.
5 BETH. He has built all around me, and he has encircled me with gall and hardship.	5 (Bet) Ha costruito sopra di me, mi ha circondato di veleno e di affanno.

8 GHIMEL. Yet even when I cry out and beg, he excludes my prayer.	8 (Ghimel) Anche se grido e invoco aiuto, egli soffoca la mia preghiera.
9 GHIMEL. He has enclosed my ways with square stones; he has subverted my paths.	9 (Ghimel) Ha sbarrato le mie vie con blocchi di pietra, ha ostruito i miei sentieri.
10 DALETH. He has become to me like a bear lying in ambush, like a lion in hiding.	10 (Dalet) Era per me un orso in agguato, un leone in luoghi nascosti.
11 DALETH. He has subverted my paths, and he has broken me. He has placed me in desolation.	11 (Dalet) Seminando di spine la mia via, mi ha lacerato, mi ha reso desolato.
12 DALETH. He has bent his bow, and he has positioned me like a target for his arrows.	12 (Dalet) Ha teso l’arco, mi ha posto come bersaglio alle sue saette.
13 HE. He has shot into my kidneys the daughters of his quiver.	13 (He) Ha conficcato nei miei reni le frecce della sua faretra.
14 HE. I have become a derision to all my people, their song throughout the day.	14 (He) Sono diventato lo scherno di tutti i popoli, la loro beffarda canzone tutto il giorno.
15 HE. He has filled me with bitterness; he has inebriated me with wormwood.	15 (He) Mi ha saziato con erbe amare, mi ha dissetato con assenzio.
16 VAU. And he has broken each one of my teeth; he has fed me with ashes.	16 (Vau) Ha spezzato i miei denti con la ghiaia, mi ha steso nella polvere.
17 VAU. And my soul has been driven away from peace; I have forgotten what is good.	17 (Vau) Sono rimasto lontano dalla pace, ho dimenticato il benessere.
18 VAU. And I said, “My end and my hope from the Lord has perished.”	18 (Vau) E dico: «È scomparsa la mia gloria, la speranza che mi veniva dal Signore».
19 ZAIN. Remember my poverty and my transgression, the wormwood and the gall.	19 (Zain) Il ricordo della mia miseria e del mio vagare è come assenzio e veleno.
20 ZAIN. I will call to mind the past, and my soul shall languish within me.	20 (Zain) Ben se ne ricorda la mia anima e si accascia dentro di me.
21 ZAIN. These recollections are in my heart; therefore, I shall hope.	21 (Zain) Questo intendo richiamare al mio cuore, e per questo voglio riprendere speranza.
22 HETH. By the mercies of the Lord, we are not consumed. For his compassion has not passed away.	22 (Het) Le grazie del Signore non sono finite, non sono esaurite le sue misericordie.
23 HETH. I know it at first light; great is your faithfulness.	23 (Het) Si rinnovano ogni mattina, grande è la sua fedeltà.
24 HETH. “The Lord is my portion,” said my soul. Because of this, I will wait for him.	24 (Het) «Mia parte è il Signore – io esclamo –, per questo in lui spero».
25 TETH. The Lord is good to those who hope in him, to the soul that seeks him.	25 (Tet) Buono è il Signore con chi spera in lui, con colui che lo cerca.
26 TETH. It is good to stand ready in silence for the salvation of God.	26 (Tet) È bene aspettare in silenzio la salvezza del Signore.
27 TETH. It is good for a man, when he has carried the yoke from his youth.	27 (Tet) È bene per l’uomo portare un giogo nella sua giovinezza.
28 JOD. He shall sit solitary and silent. For he has lifted it upon himself.	28 (Iod)Sieda costui solitario e resti in silenzio, poiché egli glielo impone.
29 JOD. He shall place his mouth in the dirt, if perhaps there may be hope.	29 (Iod)Ponga nella polvere la bocca, forse c’è ancora speranza.
30 JOD. He shall give his cheek to those who strike him; he shall be saturated with reproaches.	30 (Iod)Porga a chi lo percuote la sua guancia, si sazi di umiliazioni.
31 CAPH. For the Lord will not rebuke forever.	31 (Caf) Poiché il Signore non respinge per sempre.
32 CAPH. For, if he has cast down, he will also have compassion, according to the multitude of his mercies.	32 (Caf) Ma, se affligge, avrà anche pietà secondo il suo grande amore.
33 CAPH. For he has not humiliated from his heart, nor has he thrown aside the sons of men,	33 (Caf) Poiché contro il suo desiderio egli umilia e affligge i figli dell’uomo.
34 LAMED. as if to crush under his feet all the prisoners of the land,	34 (Lamed)Schiacciano sotto i loro piedi tutti i prigionieri del paese.
35 LAMED. as if to turn aside the judgment of a man in the sight of the presence of the Most High,	35 (Lamed) Ledono i diritti di un uomo davanti al volto dell’Altissimo.
36 LAMED. as if to pervert a man in his judgment: the Lord does not do this.	36 (Lamed) Opprimono un altro in una causa. Forse il Signore non vede tutto questo?
37 MEM. Who is this, who said to do what the Lord did not command?	37 (Mem) Chi mai ha parlato e la sua parola si è avverata, senza che il Signore lo avesse comandato?
38 MEM. Does not both misfortune and good proceed from the mouth of the Most High?	38 (Mem) Dalla bocca dell’Altissimo non procedono forse le sventure e il bene?
39 MEM. Why has a living man murmured, a man suffering for his sins?	39 (Mem) Perché si rammarica un essere vivente, un uomo, per i castighi dei suoi peccati?
40 NUN. Let us examine our ways, and seek out, and return to the Lord.	40 (Nun) «Esaminiamo la nostra condotta e scrutiamola, ritorniamo al Signore.
41 NUN. Let us lift up our hearts, with our hands, toward the Lord in the heavens.	41 (Nun) Innalziamo i nostri cuori al di sopra delle mani, verso Dio nei cieli.
42 NUN. We have acted sinfully, and we have provoked to wrath. About this, you are relentless.	42 (Nun) Noi abbiamo peccato e siamo stati ribelli, e tu non ci hai perdonato.
43 SAMECH. You have covered us in your fury, and you have struck us. You have killed, and have not spared.	43 (Samec) Ti sei avvolto nell’ira e ci hai perseguitati, hai ucciso senza pietà.
44 SAMECH. You have set a cloud opposite you, lest our prayer pass through.	44 (Samec) Ti sei avvolto in una nube, perché la supplica non giungesse fino a te.
45 SAMECH. In the midst of the peoples, you have uprooted me and cast me out.	45 (Samec) Ci hai ridotti a spazzatura e rifiuto in mezzo ai popoli.
46 PHE. All our enemies have opened their mouths over us.	46 (Pe) Hanno spalancato la bocca contro di noi tutti i nostri nemici.
47 PHE. Prediction has become for us a dread, and a snare, and a grief.	47 (Pe) Nostra sorte sono terrore e fossa, sterminio e rovina».
48 PHE. My eye has brought forth streams of water at the contrition of the daughter of my people.	48 (Pe) Rivoli di lacrime scorrono dai miei occhi, per la rovina della figlia del mio popolo.
49 AIN. My eye has been afflicted, and it has not been quieted, because there would be no rest	49 (Ain) Il mio occhio piange senza sosta perché non ha pace,
50 AIN. until the Lord looked down and saw from the heavens.	50 (Ain) finché non guardi e non veda il Signore dal cielo.
51 AIN. My eye has exhausted my soul over every one of the daughters of my city.	51 (Ain) Il mio occhio mi tormenta per tutte le figlie della mia città.
52 SADE. My enemies have chased me, and they have caught me like a bird, without reason.	52 (Sade) Mi hanno dato la caccia come a un passero coloro che mi odiano senza ragione.
53 SADE. My life has fallen into a pit, and they have placed a stone over me.	53 (Sade) Mi hanno chiuso vivo nella fossa e hanno gettato pietre su di me.
54 SADE. The waters have flooded over my head. I said, “I am lost.”	54 (Sade) Sono salite le acque fin sopra il mio capo; ho detto: «È finita per me».
55 COPH. I called upon your name, O Lord, from the furthest pit.	55 (Kof) Ho invocato il tuo nome, o Signore, dalla fossa profonda.
56 COPH. You have heard my voice. Do not turn away your ear from my sobbing and my cries.	56 (Kof) Tu hai udito il mio grido: «Non chiudere l’orecchio al mio sfogo».
57 COPH. You drew near in the daytime, when I called upon you. You said, “Fear not.”	57 (Kof) Tu eri vicino quando t’invocavo, hai detto: «Non temere!».
58 RES. You have judged, O Lord, the case of my soul. You are the Redeemer of my life.	58 (Res) Tu hai difeso, Signore, la mia causa, hai riscattato la mia vita.
59 RES. You have seen, O Lord, their iniquity against me. Judge my case.	59 (Res) Hai visto, o Signore, la mia umiliazione, difendi il mio diritto!
60 RES. You have seen all their fury, every one of their thoughts is against me.	60 (Res) Hai visto tutte le loro vendette, tutte le loro trame contro di me.
61 SIN. You have heard their reproach, O Lord, all their thoughts are against me.	61 (Sin) Hai udito, Signore, i loro insulti, tutte le loro trame contro di me.
62 SIN. The lips of those who rise up against me, and their meditations, are against me all day long.	62 (Sin) I discorsi dei miei oppositori e i loro pensieri sono contro di me tutto il giorno.
63 SIN. Watch their sitting down and their rising up: I am their psalm.	63 (Sin)Osserva quando siedono e quando si alzano; io sono la loro beffarda canzone.
64 THAU. You shall pay a recompense to them, O Lord, according to the works of their hands.	64 (Tau) Ripagali, o Signore, secondo l’opera delle loro mani.
65 THAU. You shall give them a heavy shield of the heart: your hardship.	65 (Tau) Rendili duri di cuore, sia su di loro la tua maledizione!
66 THAU. You shall pursue them in fury, and you shall destroy them under the heavens, O Lord.	66 (Tau) Perseguitali nell’ira, Signore, e distruggili sotto il cielo.
