Jeremiah 10

1 Listen to the word that the Lord has spoken concerning you, O house of Israel.	1 Écoutez la parole que Yahvé prononce sur vous, maison d’Israël.
2 Thus says the Lord: “Do not choose to learn according to the ways of the Gentiles. And do not be willing to dread the signs of heaven, which the Gentiles fear.	2 Voici ce que dit Yahvé: N’apprenez pas les pratiques des païens et ne craignez pas les signes du zodiaque; ce sont les païens qui s’en inquiètent!
3 For the laws of the people are empty. For the work of the hand of the craftsman has cut a tree from the forest with an axe.	3 Le “Dieu terrible” des païens n’est que du creux: on a coupé un arbre dans la forêt, un artisan l’a travaillé de ses mains au ciseau.
4 He has adorned it with silver and gold. He has put it together with nail and hammer, so that it will not fall apart.	4 On l’a embelli avec de l’argent ou de l’or, et on l’a fixé au marteau pour qu’il ne bouge pas.
5 They have been fabricated in the likeness of a palm tree, and they will not speak. They must be carried to be moved, because they do not have the ability to walk. Therefore, do not be willing to fear them, for they can do neither evil nor good.”	5 10:9 C’est du bois neuf, bien sûr, de l’argent martelé importé de Tarsis, de l’or d’Ofir travaillé par un sculpteur ou un orfèvre; on l’a recouvert de pourpre violette ou de pourpre rouge, mais tout cela reste un travail d’artisan.
6 O Lord, there is nothing similar to you. You are great, and your name is great in strength.	6 10:5 Ce n’est guère plus qu’un épouvantail dans un champ de concombres. Ces dieux ne parlent pas; il faut les porter car ils ne marchent pas. Ne les craignez donc pas car ils ne peuvent faire ni mal ni bien.
7 Who will not fear you, O King of the nations? For honor is yours. Among all the wise of the nations, and within all their kingdoms, there is nothing similar to you.	7 10:6 Nul n’est comme toi, Yahvé: tu es grand, et grand est ton Nom si puissant!
8 Together, they will all be proven to be unwise and foolish. The doctrine of their vanity is made of wood.	8 10:7 Qui ne te craindrait, Roi des nations? C’est justice, car entre tous les sages des païens, entre tous leurs rois, il n’y a personne comme toi.
9 Rolled silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. It is the work of a craftsman, and of the hand of a coppersmith. Hyacinth and purple is their clothing. All these things are the work of artists.	9 10:8 Tous sont pareillement bêtes et stupides: leurs idoles ne peuvent donner qu’une sagesse de bois.
10 But the Lord is the true God. He is the living God and the everlasting King. Before his indignation, the earth will shake. And the Gentiles will not be able to withstand his threats.	10 Mais Yahvé est le Dieu véritable, il est le Dieu vivant, le roi d’éternité. Quand il se met en colère, la terre tremble et les nations ne peuvent tenir devant sa fureur.
11 “And so, you shall speak to them in this way: The gods that have not made heaven and earth, let them perish from the earth and from among those places which are under heaven.	11 C’est pourquoi vous direz ceci: “Les dieux, qui n’ont fait ni le ciel ni la terre, disparaîtront de sur la terre et de dessous les cieux.”
12 He made the earth by his power, he prepared the world in his wisdom, and he stretched out the heavens with his understanding.	12 Mais lui, par sa puissance il a fait la terre; par sa sagesse il a fondé l’univers, par son intelligence il a étendu les cieux.
13 At his voice, he grants a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he lifts up the clouds from the ends of the earth. He causes the lightning with the rain, and he leads forth the wind from his storehouses.	13 S’il donne de la voix, c’est un grondement d’eaux dans les cieux; il fait venir les nuages du fond de l’horizon, il envoie les éclairs pour qu’il pleuve et fait sortir le vent de ses réservoirs.
14 Every man has become a fool concerning knowledge; every artist has been confounded by his graven image. For what he has formed is false, and there is no spirit in these things.	14 Voilà donc disqualifiée la sagesse des mortels. L’orfèvre devrait avoir honte des idoles qu’il a faites: il ne produit que des faussetés, elles sont dépourvues d’esprit.
15 These things are empty, and they are a work deserving of ridicule. In the time of their visitation, they will perish.	15 Elles ne sont rien, ce sont des œuvres ridicules qui seront jugées et disparaîtront.
16 Jacob’s portion is not like their portion. For his portion is from the One who formed all things. And Israel is the staff of his inheritance. The Lord of hosts is his name.	16 Mais le Lot de Jacob n’est pas comme elles, c’est lui qui a façonné le monde; son nom est Yahvé Sabaot, et Israël est sa propre tribu.
17 Gather your shame from the earth, you who are living under siege.”	17 Fais ton bagage et sors du pays, toi l’Assiégée!
18 For thus says the Lord: “Behold, in this turn, I will cast the inhabitants of the land far away. And I will afflict them no matter where they may be found.”	18 Car voici ce que dit Yahvé: “Cette fois je vais chasser au loin les habitants du pays, je les ferai poursuivre et ils n’échapperont pas.”
19 Woe to me, concerning my destruction! My wound is very grievous. And yet I said: Clearly, this infirmity is mine, and I will carry it.	19 “Comme je suis malheureux, je suis brisé! Comme ma plaie me fait mal! Et pourtant je disais: si ma souffrance n’était que cela.
20 My tent has been destroyed. All my cords have been broken. My sons have gone away from me; they did not remain. There is no one to stretch out my tent any more, nor to set up my curtains.	20 Ma tente a été dévastée, toutes mes cordes ont été arrachées, mes fils m’ont quittée, ils ont disparu; il n’y a personne pour remonter ma tente et en tendre les toiles.
21 For the pastors have acted foolishly, and they have not sought the Lord. Because of this, they have not understood, and all their flock has been dispersed.	21 Les bergers ont été stupides; ils n’ont pas recherché Yahvé. C’est pourquoi ils ont échoué et tout leur troupeau a été dispersé.
22 Behold, the sound of a voice approaches, a great commotion from the land of the north: so that he may make the cities of Judah into a wilderness and into a dwelling place for serpents.	22 Voici qu’arrive une nouvelle, un grand vacarme s’entend dans le nord; les villes de Juda vont devenir un amas de ruines, un repaire pour les chacals.”
23 I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not his own. Neither is it given to man to walk and to direct his own steps.	23 Tu le sais, Yahvé, l’homme n’est pas maître de sa route, le marcheur n’est pas sûr de ses pas.
24 Correct me, O Lord, yet truly, do so with judgment, and not in your fury. Otherwise, you will reduce me to nothing.	24 Corrige-nous donc Yahvé, mais juste comme il faut, non pas avec colère, car alors tu nous réduis à rien.
25 Pour out your indignation upon the nations that have not known you, and upon the provinces that have not invoked your name. For they have fed upon Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and they have utterly destroyed his honor.	25 Déverse ta fureur sur les nations qui ne te connaissent pas, sur les clans qui n’ont pas invoqué ton nom, car ils ont dévoré Jacob. Ils l’ont dévoré, exterminé; ils ont détruit sa demeure.
