The vision of Isaiah, the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Joatham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.1 The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem, which he received in the reigns ofUzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah kings of Judah.
Listen, O heavens, and pay attention, O earth, for the Lord has spoken. I have nurtured and raised children, but they have spurned me.2 Listen, you heavens; earth, attend, for Yahweh is speaking, 'I have reared children and brought them up,but they have rebel ed against me.
An ox knows his owner, and a donkey knows the manger of his lord, but Israel has not known me, and my people have not understood.3 The ox knows its owner and the donkey its master's crib; Israel does not know, my people do notunderstand.'
Woe to a sinful nation, a people burdened by iniquity, a wicked offspring, accursed children. They have abandoned the Lord. They have blasphemed the Holy One of Israel. They been taken away backwards.4 Disaster, sinful nation, people weighed down with guilt, race of wrong-doers, perverted children! Theyhave abandoned Yahweh, despised the Holy One of Israel, they have turned away from him.
For what reason shall I continue to strike you, as you increase transgressions? The entire head is feeble, and the entire heart is grieving.5 Where shal I strike you next, if you persist in treason? The whole head is sick, the whole heart isdiseased,
From the sole of the foot, even to the top of the head, there is no soundness within. Wounds and bruises and swelling sores: these are not bandaged, nor treated with medicine, nor soothed with oil.6 from the sole of the foot to the head there is nothing healthy: only wounds, bruises and open sores notdressed, not bandaged, not soothed with ointment,
Your land is desolate. Your cities have been set ablaze. Foreigners devour your countryside in your sight, and it will become desolate, as if devastated by enemies.7 your country a desolation, your towns burnt down, your soil, foreigners lay it waste before your eyes, adesolation like devastation by foreigners.
And the daughter of Zion will be left behind, like an arbor in a vineyard, and like a shelter in a cucumber field, and like a city being laid to waste.8 The daughter of Zion is left like a shanty in a vineyard, like a shed in a cucumber field, like a citybesieged.
If the Lord of hosts had not bequeathed us offspring, we would have been like Sodom, and we would have been comparable to Gomorrah.9 Had Yahweh Sabaoth not left us a few survivors, we should be like Sodom, we should be the same asGomorrah.
Listen to the Word of the Lord, you leaders of the people of Sodom. Listen closely to the law of our God, O people of Gomorrah.10 Hear what Yahweh says, you rulers of Sodom; listen to what our God teaches, you people ofGomorrah.
The multitude of your sacrifices, what is that to me, says the Lord? I am full. I do not desire holocausts of rams, nor the fat of fatlings, nor the blood of calves and of lambs and of he-goats.11 'What are your endless sacrifices to me?' says Yahweh. 'I am sick of burnt offerings of rams and the fatof calves. I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
When you approach before my sight, who is it that requires these things from your hands, so that you would walk in my courts?12 When you come and present yourselves before me, who has asked you to trample through my courts?
You should no longer offer sacrifice vain. Incense is an abomination to me. The new moons and the Sabbaths and the other feast days, I will not receive. Your gatherings are iniquitous.13 Bring no more futile cereal offerings, the smoke from them fil s me with disgust. New Moons, Sabbaths, assemblies -- I cannot endure solemnity combined with guilt.
My soul hates your days of proclamation and your solemnities. They have become bothersome to me. I labor to endure them.14 Your New Moons and your meetings I utterly detest; to me they are a burden I am tired of bearing.
And so, when you extend your hands, I will avert my eyes from you. And when you multiply your prayers, I will not heed you. For your hands are full of blood.15 When you stretch out your hands I turn my eyes away. You may multiply your prayers, I shal not belistening. Your hands are covered in blood,
Wash, become clean, take away the evil of your intentions from my eyes. Cease to act perversely.16 wash, make yourselves clean. Take your wrong-doing out of my sight. Cease doing evil.
Learn to do good. Seek judgment, support the oppressed, judge for the orphan, defend the widow.17 Learn to do good, search for justice, discipline the violent, be just to the orphan, plead for the widow.
And then approach and accuse me, says the Lord. Then, if your sins are like scarlet, they shall be made white like snow; and if they are red like vermillion, they shall become white like wool.18 'Come, let us talk this over,' says Yahweh. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shal be white assnow; though they are red as crimson, they shal be like wool.
If you are willing, and you listen to me, then you will eat the good things of the land.19 If you are willing to obey, you shall eat the good things of the earth.
But if you are not willing, and you provoke me to anger, then the sword will devour you. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.20 But if you refuse and rebel, the sword shal eat you instead -- for Yahweh's mouth has spoken.'
How has the faithful city, full of judgment, become a harlot? Justice lived in her, but now murderers.21 The faithful city, what a harlot she has become! Zion, once ful of fair judgement, where saving justiceused to dwell, but now assassins!
Your silver has turned into dross. Your wine has been mixed with water.22 Your silver has turned into dross, your wine is watered.
Your leaders are unfaithful, the associates of thieves. They all love gifts; they pursue rewards. They do not judge for orphans, and the widow’s case is not brought before them.23 Your princes are rebels, accomplices of brigands. Al of them greedy for presents and eager for bribes, they show no justice to the orphan, and the widow's cause never reaches them.
Because of this, the Lord God of hosts, the Strength of Israel, says: Ah! I will be consoled over my enemies, and I will be vindicated from my adversaries.24 Hence, the Lord Yahweh Sabaoth, the Mighty One of Israel, says this, 'Disaster, I shall get the better ofmy enemies, I shall avenge myself on my foes.
And I will turn my hand to you. And I will temper your dross unto purity, and I will take away all your tin.25 'I shal turn my hand against you, I shal purge your dross as though with potash, I shal remove al youral oy.
And I will restore your judges, so that they will be as before, and your counselors as in times long past. After this, you shall be called the City of the Just, the Faithful City.26 'And I shal restore your judges as at first, your counsel ors as in bygone days, after which you wil becal ed City of Saving Justice, Faithful City.'
Zion will be redeemed in judgment, and they will lead her back to justice.27 Zion wil be redeemed by fair judgement, and those who return, by saving justice.
And he shall crush the accursed and sinners together. And those who have abandoned the Lord will be consumed.28 Rebels and sinners alike wil be destroyed, and those who abandon Yahweh wil perish.
For they shall be confounded because of the idols, to which they have sacrificed. And you shall be ashamed over the gardens that you chose,29 How ashamed you wil be of the terebinths which gave you such delight; and how you wil blush for thegardens which you chose!
when you were like an oak with falling leaves, and like a garden without water.30 For you wil be like a terebinth with faded leaves, like a garden without water;
And your strength will be like the embers from stubble, and your work will be like a spark, and both will burn together, and there will be no one to extinguish it.31 the strong wil become like tinder, his work like the spark; both wil go up in flames together, with no oneto put them out.
