Sirach 45

1 Moses was beloved by God and men. The remembrance of him is a blessing.	1 Puis Dieu fit paraître Moïse, un descendant de Jacob, un homme de bien, aimé de Dieu et des hommes, dont la mémoire sera bénie à jamais.
2 He made him like the holy ones in glory, and he magnified him by the fear of his enemies, and he appeased great portents by his words.	2 Il le rendit glorieux tout autant que les anges, il le rendit puissant, terrible pour ses ennemis;
3 He glorified him in the sight of kings, and he gave commandments to him in the sight of his people, and he revealed his glory to him.	3 mais à sa parole les prodiges cessaient. Le Seigneur le glorifia en présence des rois, il lui donna des commandements pour son peuple et lui fit entrevoir un reflet de sa gloire.
4 He made him holy by his faith and meekness, and he chose him from among all flesh.	4 Il fit entrer dans son mystère cet homme fidèle et doux qu’il avait choisi entre tous.
5 For he heard him and his voice, and he led him into a cloud.	5 Il lui fit entendre sa voix et l’introduisit dans la nuée obscure. Il lui parla face à face et lui donna les commandements, cette loi révélée, loi de vie, pour qu’il enseigne à Jacob l’Alliance, à Israël ses décrets.
6 And he gave him precepts in his presence, with a law of life and discipline, so as to teach Jacob his covenant and Israel his judgments.	6 Dieu éleva et consacra tout comme lui son frère Aaron, de la tribu de Lévi.
7 He exalted his brother Aaron and those who were similar to him from the tribe of Levi.	7 Il conclut avec lui une alliance perpétuelle, faisant de lui le prêtre de son peuple. Il le gratifia d’ornements splendides et le revêtit d’une robe d’apparat.
8 He established an eternal covenant with him, and he gave him the priesthood of the people, and he caused him to be blessed in glory.	8 Il le couvrit de parures honorifiques et lui remit les insignes de sa puissance: pagne, tunique longue, éphod.
9 And he encircled him with a glorious belt, and he clothed him with a robe of glory, and he crowned him with virtuous attire.	9 Au bord de son manteau étaient fixées des grenades et d’innombrables clochettes d’or qui tintaient à chacun de ses pas; on les entendait résonner dans le temple et le peuple y restait attentif.
10 He placed upon him a garment to the feet, and pants, and an ephod, and he wrapped him all around with many little bells of gold,	10 Il le drapa d’un vêtement sacré, brodé d’or, de pourpre et d’écarlate; par-dessus se trouvait le pectoral du jugement, avec les dés de l’ourim et du toumim, lui aussi brodé de fils écarlates.
11 so that there would be a sound at his arrival, and so as to make a noise that would be heard in the temple, as a memorial for the sons of his people.	11 Des pierres précieuses étincelaient, gravées comme des cachets, fixées par le joaillier sur une monture d’or. On y lisait les noms des tribus d’Israël: c’était pour les rappeler au souvenir du Seigneur.
12 He provided him with a holy robe of gold and hyacinth and purple, a woven work for a wise man of judgment and truth,	12 Il lui mit une couronne d’or au-dessus du turban, avec en relief cette inscription: Consacré au Seigneur! C’était un ornement précieux, un ouvrage splendide qui attirait tous les regards.
13 a work of twisted scarlet, the work of an artist, with precious stones, cut and set in gold, and engraved by the work of a jeweler, as a memorial according to the number of the tribes of Israel.	13 Avant lui on n’avait rien vu d’aussi beau; aucun profane n’a revêtu de tels ornements; ils sont réservés à ses fils et à ses descendants dans la suite des temps.
14 He provided him with a crown of gold upon his headdress, on which was written a symbol of holiness, a mark of honor. This was a work of virtue and a delight to the eyes in its beauty.	14 Deux fois par jour, continuellement, le feu consume ses offrandes.
15 Prior to him, there was no one of such beauty, even from the beginning.	15 Moïse lui-même l’a consacré: Aaron reçut de lui l’onction d’huile sainte; c’est ainsi qu’il a reçu ce privilège pour toujours, pour lui et pour ses descendants, tant que dureront les cieux: ils feront le service liturgique et seront prêtres, et ils donneront au peuple de Dieu la bénédiction en son Nom.
16 No foreigner was ever clothed with these things, but only his sons and his descendents alone, for all time.	16 Il a été choisi parmi tous les vivants pour présenter l’offrande au Seigneur, avec l’encens d’agréable odeur, afin que le Seigneur se souvienne de son peuple et lui pardonne ses péchés.
17 His sacrifices were consumed by fire daily.	17 Le Seigneur lui a donné d’interpréter ses commandements et de se prononcer quand il s’agit d’enseigner à Jacob ses volontés, d’éclairer Israël à propos de sa loi.
18 Moses filled his hands and anointed him with holy oil.	18 Des étrangers ont conspiré contre Aaron, ils ont été jaloux de lui au désert; c’étaient les hommes de Datan et d’Abiram, c’était avec Coré le parti des violents et des furieux.
19 An eternal covenant was made, with him and with his offspring, like the days of heaven, to execute the office of the priesthood, and to give praise and to glorify his people, in his name.	19 Le Seigneur les vit et cela lui déplut; ils furent exterminés par l’ardeur de sa colère. Il les frappa de façon extraordinaire: des flammes de feu les dévorèrent.
20 He chose him from among all living men to offer to God sacrifice, incense, and a pleasing fragrance, as a memorial of appeasement on behalf of his people.	20 Dieu a fait plus encore pour la gloire d’Aaron: il lui a donné en guise d’héritage les premiers fruits des récoltes, lui assurant ainsi du pain à satiété.
21 And he gave him authority by his precepts, in the covenants of his judgments, to teach Jacob his testimonies, and to give light by his law to Israel.	21 Il lui a donné, à lui et à sa race, les offrandes faites au Seigneur: c’est là leur pain.
22 Then strangers stood up against him, and, because of envy, the men who were with Dathan and Abiram surrounded him in the desert, along with the congregation of Korah, in their anger.	22 Par contre ils n’ont pas d’héritage sur la terre de leur peuple, ils n’y ont pas leur part avec le peuple, car le Seigneur a dit: “Je serai moi-même ta part et ton héritage.”
23 The Lord God saw this, and it did not please him, and so they were consumed by the force of his anger.	23 Quant à Pinhas, fils d’Éléazar, il est le troisième en gloire, car il a craint le Seigneur et s’est montré jaloux pour lui. Il resta ferme quand le peuple se révolta: ses dispositions ne faiblirent pas. Et c’est lui qui obtint le pardon pour Israël.
24 He wrought great portents among them, and he consumed them with a flame of fire.	24 C’est pourquoi le Seigneur conclut avec lui une alliance de paix: il l’établit comme chef du sanctuaire et du peuple; il lui remit ainsi qu’à sa descendance la dignité de chef des prêtres, et cela, pour les siècles.
25 And he added glory to Aaron, and he gave him an inheritance, and he allotted to him the first-fruits of the earth.	25 Lorsque Dieu s’est engagé avec David, fils de Jessé, de la tribu de Juda, un seul de ses fils héritait de sa royauté; pour Aaron, par contre, son sacerdoce passe à tous ses descendants.
26 He prepared for them the finest bread unto fullness. And they shall also eat from the sacrifices of the Lord, which he gave to him and to his offspring.	26 (Ô race d’Aaron,) que le Seigneur mette la sagesse en vos cœurs pour gouverner son peuple avec droiture, afin que d’âge en âge, ni leur prospérité, ni leur gloire ne se perde!
27 And yet he will not have an inheritance among the people of the land, and he has no portion among the people. For the Lord himself is his portion and his inheritance.
28 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, is third in glory, by imitating him in the fear of the Lord.
29 And he stood up against the shamefulness of the people. By the goodness and responsiveness of his soul, he appeased God on behalf of Israel.
30 For this reason, he made him a covenant of peace, a leader of the sanctuary and of his people, so that the dignity of the priesthood would remain with him and with his offspring unto eternity.
31 And he made a covenant with king David, the son of Jesse from the tribe of Judah, an inheritance for him and for his offspring, so that he might provide wisdom for our hearts, so as to judge his people in justice, lest their good things be abolished. And he caused their glory within their nation to be everlasting.
