Sirach 37

1 Every friend will say: “I also am a close friend.” But there is a friend who is a friend in name only. Is this not a grief even unto death?	1 Ogni amico dice: «Anch'io ho stretto amicizia [con lui] »; ma c'è l'amico ch'è amico solo di nome. Non è ella una tristezza sino alla morte,
2 But a companion and friend may turn into an enemy.	2 [quando] un compagno e amico si volta a inimicizia?
3 O wicked presumption! From what were you created that you would cover the dry land with your malice and deceitfulness?	3 O idea scellerata! donde sbucasti tu a coprir la terra di malizia e d'inganno?
4 A companion may rejoice with his friend in good times, but in a time of tribulation, he will be an adversary.	4 Il compagno [egoista] se la gode con l'amico nell'allegria, e al tempo della tribolazione si fa avversario.
5 There is a companion who commiserates with a friend for the sake of the stomach, but he will shield himself from the enemy.	5 Il compagno [egoista] si travaglia con l'amico per la [propria] pancia, e in faccia al nemico imbraccia lo scudo [a sua propria difesa].
6 You should not forget your friend in your soul, and you should not be unmindful of him in your wealth.	6 Non dimenticare in cuor tuo il tuo amico, e non ti scordar di lui nella tua opulenza.
7 Do not choose to consult with someone who waits in ambush for you. And hide your counsel from those who rival you.	7 Non ti consigliare con colui che t'insidia, e ai gelosi di te nascondi il [tuo] disegno.
8 Every counselor offers advice, but some are counselors only for themselves.	8 Ogni consigliere spaccia consigli, ma c'è chi consiglia nel proprio interesse.
9 Guard your soul from a counselor. And know beforehand what his interests are. For he will form thoughts from his own soul.	9 Sta' in guardia verso il consigliere, e cerca di saper prima qual è il suo bisogno, poiché a se stesso egli penserà;
10 Otherwise, he may set a signpost in the ground, and he may say to you:	10 affinchè egli non pianti un piuolo in terra, e ti dica:
11 “Your own way is good.” But then he will stand at a distance to see what befalls you.	11 «Buona è la tua via», e si metta di faccia a veder ciò che ti accadrà.
12 Do not discuss holiness with an irreligious man, nor justice with one who is unjust. You should not speak with a woman about her who is a rival, nor with a coward about war, nor with a merchant about exaggeration, nor with a buyer about selling, nor with a spiteful man about giving thanks,	12 Con l'uomo irreligioso tratta di santità, e con l'ingiusto di giustizia! [Non ti consigliare] con una donna a proposito della sua rivale, e con un pusillanime a proposito di guerra, con un commerciante sur uno scambio, e col compratore sulla vendita, con un invidioso circa la riconoscenza,
13 nor with the impious about piety, nor with the dishonest about honesty, nor with the field worker about other kinds of work,	13 e con uno spietato circa la benignità, con un disonesto sull'onestà, con un neghittoso sur un lavoro qualsiasi,
14 nor with a worker hired for a year about the end of the year, nor with a lazy servant about great works. You should pay no heed to these persons in any matter of counsel.	14 con l'operaio fissato per un anno sul da compiersi nell'anno e col servo pigro sul molto lavoro: non t'appoggiare a costoro per nessun consiglio.
15 But be continually with a holy man, with anyone whom you know to observe the fear of God,	15 Ma frequenta l'uomo pio, chiunque tu conosca timorato di Dio;
16 whose soul is in agreement with your own soul, and who, when you falter in the dark, will share your sorrows.	16 la cui anima è secondo l'anima tua, e che, se barcollerai nelle tenebre, prenderà parte alle tue pene.
17 And establish a heart of good counsel within yourself. For there is nothing of greater usefulness to you than this.	17 E tienti a ciò che il cuore ti consiglia, che non c'è nessuno più fedele di lui:
18 At any time, the soul of a holy man declares more truths than seven vigilant watchmen sitting in a high place.	18 l'anima d'un uomo pio dice talvolta il vero, meglio che sette sentinelle poste sur un'altura a spiare,
19 But concerning all things, pray to the Most High, so that he may direct your way in truth.	19 E prega inoltre l'Altissimo, che diriga sicuramente la tua via.
20 In all your works, let a true word precede you, with steadfast counsel before every deed.	20 Principio d'ogni opera sia la riflessione, e ad ogni azione vada innanzi il ponderato consiglio.
21 A wicked word can change the heart. From the heart four kinds of things arise: good and evil, life and death. And the tongue is continually their ruler. There is a man who is an astute teacher of many, and yet this is useless to his own soul.	21 Una malvagia parola muta lì cuore, da che nascono quattro cose: il bene e il male, la vita e la morte; e dominatrice di esse è costantemente la lingua. C'è l'uomo scaltro, maestro di molti, ma ch'è inutile a se stesso.
22 A man of experience has taught many, and this is pleasant to his own soul.	22 L'uomo sperimentato istruisce molti, ed è piacevole a se stesso.
23 Whoever speaks mere rhetoric is hateful; he will be deceived in every matter.	23 [C'è] chi vuol fare il saccente nel parlare, [ed] è odioso: sarà privo d'ogni cosa, [anche del pane].
24 Grace is not given to him from the Lord. For he has been deprived of all wisdom.	24 Il Signore non gli ha concesso d'esser gradito, perchè privo d'ogni sapienza.
25 There is a wise man who is wise within his own soul, and the fruit of his understanding is praiseworthy.	25 C'è il sapiente ch'è sapiente a suo proprio vantaggio e i frutti del suo sapere son lodevoli.
26 A wise man instructs his own people, and the fruit of his understanding is faithful.	26 L'uomo sapiente istruisce il suo popolo, e i frutti del suo sapere sono sicuri.
27 A wise man will be filled with blessings, and those who see will praise him.	27 L'uomo sapiente sarà ricolmo di benedizioni, e quanti lo vedono lo chiameran beato.
28 The life of a man is in the number of his days. But the days of Israel are innumerable.	28 La vita dell'uomo è un certo numero di giorni, ma i giorni d'Israele son senza numero.
29 A wise man will inherit honor among the people, and his name will live in eternity.	29 Il sapiente si acquista onore [e fiducia] presso il popolo, e il suo nome vivrà in eterno.
30 Son, test your own mind in your life, and if it is lacking, you should not give it authority.	30 Figliuolo, durante la tua vita saggia l'anima tua, e s'è malvagia non le dar potere.
31 For not all things are fitting for all persons, and not every kind of thing is agreeable to every soul.	31 Perchè non tutto conviene a tutti, e non ogni anima trova in ogni cosa soddisfazione.
32 Do not choose to be eager during any feast, and you should not act with excess toward any food.	32 a Non esser -ingordo mai nel banchettare, e non ti gettare su ogni vivanda.
33 For in excessive eating there will be infirmity, and gluttony will continue even unto illness.	33 Perchè i molti cibi cagionano gravezza, e l'insaziabilità conduce sino alla colica.
34 By excessive drinking, many have passed away. But he who abstains will add to his life.	34 Per intemperanza molti perirono, ma chi s'astiene [dagli eccessi], prolunga la vita.
