Job 24

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINBIBLES DES PEUPLES
The times are not hidden from the Almighty; even those who know him, do not know his days.1 Le Puissant n’aura-t-il pas son heure? Ses fidèles ne verront-ils jamais venir son jour?
Some have crossed the boundaries, plundered the flocks, and given them pasture.2 Les méchants déplacent les bornes et font paître des troupeaux volés.
They have driven away the donkey of orphans, and have taken the cow from the widow as collateral.3 Ils emmènent l’âne des orphelins et confisquent le bœuf de la veuve.
They have undermined the way of the poor, and have pressed together the meek of the earth.4 24:9 Ils enlèvent l’orphelin à sa nourrice et prennent en gage le nourrisson du pauvre.
Others, like wild asses in the desert, go forth to their work; by watching for prey, they obtain bread for their children.5 Comme les ânes du désert ils sortent dès le matin en quête de nourriture: au soir ils n’y a pas de pain pour leurs enfants.
They reap a field that is not their own, and they harvest a vineyard that they have taken by force.6 De nuit ils moissonnent dans les champs ou récoltent dans la vigne du méchant.
They send men away naked, having taken the clothing of those who have no covering in the cold;7 Ils passent la nuit nus, sans vêtements, sans couverture contre le froid.
these are wet with the mountain rain, and, having no covering, they embrace the rocks.8 Trempés par les averses de montagne, faute d’abri ils se serrent contre le rocher.
They have used violence to deprive orphans, and they have robbed the poor common people.
From the naked and those who do not have enough clothing, and from the hungry, they have taken away sheaves of grain.10 Ils vont et viennent, nus et sans vêtement, ils portent les gerbes, mais ils sont affamés.
They take their midday rest among the stockpiles of those who, though they have trodden the winepresses, suffer thirst.11 Ils écrasent les olives entre les meules, ils foulent dans la cuve les grappes, mais ils ont soif.
In the cities, they caused the men to groan and the spirit of the wounded to cry out, and so God does not allow this to go unpunished.12 Dans la ville les mourants gémissent les blessés appellent au secours, mais Dieu n’entend pas leur prière!
They have been rebellious against the light; they have not known his ways, nor have they returned by his paths.13 24:14 Avant le jour l’assassin s’est levé, pour tuer le pauvre et l’indigent;
The killer of men rises at first light; he executes the destitute and the poor, but, in truth, he is like a thief in the night.14 24:15 mais déjà l’adultère attend l’ombre du soir: “Que nul œil ne me voie!” se dit-il, et il met une étoffe sur son visage. 14c Le voleur rôde dans la nuit;
The eye of the adulterer waits for darkness, saying, “No eye will see me,” and he covers his face.15 24:16 de jour il avait repéré les maisons, dans l’obscurité il les force.
He passes through houses in the nighttime, just as they had agreed among themselves in the daytime; and they are ignorant of the light.16 24:13 Tous ceux-là sont de ceux qui haïssent la lumière, ils n’ont pas reconnu ses chemins et ne reviendront pas par ses sentiers.
If sunrise should suddenly appear, it is treated by them like the shadow of death; and they walk in darkness, as if in light.17 L’heure sombre, pour eux, c’est le matin; quand il brille, c’est alors qu’ils ont peur.
He is nimble on the surface of water. His place on land is to be accursed. May he not walk by way of the vineyards.18 Ils sont comme l’écume à la surface des eaux et dans le pays on maudit leur domaine, on évite de traverser leurs vignes.
May he cross from the snowy waters to excessive heat, and his sin, all the way to hell.19 Comme la chaleur dessèche les eaux de neige, le royaume des morts absorbe le pécheur.
Let mercy forget him. His charm is worms. Let him not be remembered, but instead be broken like an unfruitful tree.20 Le sein qui l’a formé l’oublie, nul ne rappelle son nom: l’injustice déjà n’est qu’un arbre brisé.
For he has fed on the barren, who does not bear fruit, and he has not done good to the widow.21 Il maltraitait la femme sans enfants, il ne faisait aucun bien à la veuve.
He has pulled down the strong by his strength, and, when he stands up, he will not have trust in his life.22 Mais quand le Puissant s’en prend aux grands seigneurs, quand il se lève, leur vie même n’est plus sûre.
God has given him a place for repentance, and he abuses it with arrogance, but his eyes are upon his ways.23 Il les laissait confiants en leur sécurité, mais ses yeux veillaient sur leurs actes.
They are lifted up for a little while, but they will not continue, and they will be brought low, just like all things, and they will be taken away, and, like the tops of the ears of grain, they will be crushed.24 Un moment ils ont été grands, et puis plus rien. Ils retombent comme les herbes cueillies, ils se fanent comme la tête des épis.
But, if this is not so, who is able to prove to me that I have lied and to place my words before God?25 Si tout cela n’est pas vrai, prouvez que j’ai menti: qui réfutera mes paroles?
