Nehemiah 6

1 Now it happened that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem, an Arab, and our other enemies, had heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no interruption remaining in it, (even though, at that time, I had not set up the double doors at the gates,)	1 Ma avendo udito Sanaballath, e Tobia, e Gossem Arabo, e gli altri nostri nemici, com'io avea fabbricate le mura: e come non vi restava più apertura (non si eran però ancora messe le imposte alle porte;)
2 Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying: “Come, and let us strike a pact together in the villages, on the plain of Ono.” But they were thinking that they would do me harm.	2 Sanaballath, e Gossem mi mandarono a dire: Vieni, e facciamo alleanza, tra noi in qualcheduno de' villaggi della campagna di Ono: ma eglino pensavano a farmi del male.
3 Therefore, I sent messengers to them, saying: “I am doing a great work, and I cannot descend, lest perhaps it may be neglected when I go out and descend to you.”	3 Io pertanto mandai gente a dir loro: Ho per le mani un gran lavoro, e non posso venire, aftinché non resti trascurato, s' io parto per venire a voi.
4 Then they sent to me, with this same word, four times. And I responded to them with the same word as before.	4 Ed ei mandarono per ben quattro volte a dirmi la stessa cosa: e io risposi loro, come da prima.
5 And Sanballat sent his servant to me a fifth time, with the former word, and he had a letter in his hand written in this manner:	5 E Sanaballath mi mandò per lo stesso fine di prima la quinta volta un suo servo, che portava una lettera di questo tenore:
6 “It has been heard among the Gentiles, and Geshem has said it, that you and the Jews are planning to rebel, and because of this, you are building the wall and thinking to raise yourself as a king over them. For this reason,	6 Si è divulgato tralle genti, e Gossem lo afferma, che tu, e i Giudei meditate ribellione, e per questo tu rialzi le mura, e vuoi farti loro re: e che a questo fine
7 you also have stationed prophets, who preach about you in Jerusalem, saying: ‘There is a king in Judea!’ But the king will hear about these words. Therefore, come now, so that we may go to counsel together.”	7 Tu hai pronti de' profeti, i quali ti vadano encomiando per Gerusalemme, e dicano: Egli è il re della Giudea. Queste cose il re le saprà: per questo vieni tosto, affinchè consultiamo insieme.
8 And I sent to them, saying: “There has been nothing done according to these words, which you have spoken. For you are inventing these things from your own heart.”	8 Ma io gli mandai a dire: La cosa non istà, come tu dici: perocché tu crei in cuor tuo queste cose.
9 For all these men wished to frighten us, thinking that our hands would cease from the work, and that we would cease. For this reason, I strengthened my hands all the more.	9 Conciossiachè tutti coloro ci mettevano degli spauracchi, sperando di ritrarci dal lavoro, e di farcelo abbandonare. Ma io per questo stesso mi animai maggiormente,
10 And I entered into the house of Shemaiah, the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, in secret. And he said: “Let us consult together in the house of God, in the midst of the temple. And let us close the doors of the temple. For they will come to kill you, and they will arrive in the night to put you to death.”	10 E andai di nascosto a casa di Semaia figliuolo di Dalai, figliuolo di Metabeel. Il quale disse: Andiamo a discorrerla tra di noi nella casa di Dio nel mezzo del tempio, e chiudiamo le porte: perocché coloro sono per venire a ucciderti, e verranno di notte per darti morte.
11 And I said: “How could anyone like me flee? And who like me should enter the temple, so that he may live? I will not enter.”	11 Ma io dissi: Forse un uomo come me si dà alla fuga? e un uomo qual son io, potrà entrare nel tempio, e salvarsi? io non vi anderò.
12 And I understood that God had not sent him, but he had spoken to me as if he were prophesying, and that Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.	12 E io compresi, ch'ei non era mandato da Dio, e mi avea parlato quasi fosse uomo ispirato, ma Tobia, e Sanaballath lo aveano comperato:
13 For he had accepted money, so that I would be afraid, and would sin, and so that they would have some evil with which to rebuke me.	13 Perocché egli era stato pagato per atterrirmi, e farmi peccare, onde quegli avesser ragione di rimproverarmi.
14 Remember me, O Lord, because of Tobiah and Sanballat, because of their works of this kind. Then, too, Noadiah, a prophetess, and the rest of the prophets, would have made me afraid.	14 Ricordati di me, o Signore, per riguardo ai raggiri di Tobia, e di Sanaballath, e anche di Noadia profeta, e degli altri profeti, i quali mi facevano paura.
15 Now the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth day of the month of Elul, in fifty-two days.	15 Or le mura furon condotte a fine ai venticinque del mese di Elul, in cinquantadue giorni.
16 Then it happened that, when all our enemies had heard of it, all the nations that were around us were afraid, and they were downcast within themselves. For they knew that this work had been accomplished by God.	16 Or quando ebber saputo questo tutti i nostri nemici, s'intimorirono tutte le nazioni circonvicine, e si sbigottirono in cuor loro, conoscendo che questa era opera fatta da Dio.
17 But also, in those days, many letters were being sent by the nobles of the Jews to Tobiah, and were arriving from Tobiah to them.	17 E per quel tempo andavano, e venivano lettere molte de' magnati Giudei a Tobia, e di Tobia a quelli.
18 For there were many in Judea who had sworn an oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah, the son of Arah, and because Jehohanan, his son, had married the daughter of Meshullam, the son of Berechiah.	18 Perocché molti erano nella Giudea, che gli avean giurata amistà, perchè egli era genero di Sechenia figliuolo di Area, e Johanan suo figliuolo avea sposata la figliuola di Mosollam figliuolo di Barachia:
19 Moreover, they praised him before me, and they reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters, so that he might make me afraid.	19 Ed ei ne facevano encomi in mia Presenza, e a lui riferivano quel, ch'io diceva. E Tobia scriveva lettere per atterrirmi.
