CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINBIBBIA VOLGARE
Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah, and they appointed him king in place of his father, in Jerusalem.1 Il popolo della terra tolse Ioacaz figliuolo di Iosia, e fecerlo re in Ierusalem per suo padre.
Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he had begun to reign, and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem.2 Ed era Ioacaz, quando incominciò a regnare, di XXIII anni; e tre mesi regnò in Ierusalem.
Then the king of Egypt, when he had arrived in Jerusalem, removed him, and condemned the land to one hundred talents of silver and one talent of gold.3 E lo re di Egitto trionfante lo rimosse; e condannoe la terra in cento talenti d'ariento, e uno d'oro.
And he appointed Eliakim, his brother, as king in his place, over Judah and Jerusalem. And he changed his name to Jehoiakim. Truly, he took Jehoahaz with him, and he led him away to Egypt.4 E fece re per lui Eliachim, suo fratello, sopra Giuda e Ierusalem; e mutuoe il suo nome in Ioachim; e questo Ioacaz menò seco, e menollo in Egitto.
Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he had begun to reign, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem. And he did evil before the Lord his God.5 Ed era Ioachim, quando incominciò a regnare, di XXV anni; e XI anni regnò in Ierusalem; e fece male nel cospetto del suo Signore Iddio.
Nebuchadnezzar, the king of the Chaldeans, ascended against him, and led him bound in chains to Babylon.6 Contro a costui ascendeo Nabucodonosor re de' Caldei; e menollo, legato con catene, in Babilonia.
And to there, he also took away the vessels of the Lord, and he placed them in his temple.7 Alla quale portò anco le vasa del Signore, e puosele nel tempio suo.
But the rest of the words of Jehoiakim, and his abominations that he worked, and the things that were found in him, are contained in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. Then his son, Jehoiachin, reigned in his place.8 Tutto l' altro de' fatti di Ioachim, e delle abominazioni le quali egli fece e che in lui furono trovate, si contiene nei libri de' re d' Israel e di Giuda. E regnò per lui Ioachin suo figliuolo.
Jehoiachin was eight years old when he had begun to reign, and he reigned for three months and ten days in Jerusalem. And he did evil in the sight of the Lord.9 Ed era Ioachin, quando cominciò a regnare, di otto anni; e tre mesi e X di regnò in Ierusalem, e fece male nel cospetto del Signore.
And when the course of a year had turned, king Nebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon, carrying away, at the same time, the most precious vessels of the house of the Lord. Truly, he appointed his uncle, Zedekiah, as king over Judah and Jerusalem.10 E voltandosi il cerchio d' uno anno, mandoe il re Nabucodonosor, che il menassero in Babilonia, portando con esso loro le preziosissime vase della casa di Dio. E fece re Sedecia, suo zio, sopra Giuda e Ierusalem.
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he had begun to reign. And he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem.11 E Sedecia (re), quando incominciò a regnare, era di XXI anno; e XI anni regnò in Ierusalem.
And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord his God. And he did not show remorse before the face of the prophet Jeremiah, who was speaking to him from the mouth of the Lord.12 E fece male negli occhii del suo Signore Iddio, e non si vergognò dalla faccia di Ieremia profeta, il quale parlava a lui dalla parte di Dio.
Also, he withdrew from king Nebuchadnezzar, who had bound him by an oath to God, and he hardened his own neck and his own heart, so that he did not return to the Lord, the God of Israel.13 Ed erasi partito da Nabucodonosor, il quale avea giurato dalla parte del Signore; e avea indurato il cuore e la cervice sua, per non ritornare al Signore Iddio d'Israel.
Then too, all the leaders of the priests, with the people, transgressed iniquitously, in accord with all the abominations of the Gentiles. And they polluted the house of the Lord, which he had sanctified to himself in Jerusalem.14 E tutti i. principi de' sacerdoti e il popolo prevaricarono malvagiamente secondo tutte le abominazioni delle genti, e bruttarono la casa del Signore, la quale egli avea santificata a sè in Ierusalem.
Then the Lord, the God of their fathers, sent to them, by the hand of his messengers, rising in the night and daily admonishing them. For he was lenient to his people and to his habitation.15 E il Signore Iddio de' padri loro mandava a loro per le mani de' suoi messaggi, levandosi di notte, e ciascuno die ammonendogli, però ch' egli perdonasse al suo popolo e al suo abitacolo.
But they ridiculed the messengers of God, and they gave little weight to his words, and they mocked the prophets, until the fury of the Lord ascended against his people, and there was no remedy.16 Ed egli scandalizzavano i suoi messaggi, e dispregiavano le sue parole, e faceano beffe de' profeti, tanto che ascendeo il furore del Signore nel suo popolo, e non fu niuna curazione.
For he led over them the king of the Chaldeans. And he put to death their young men by the sword, in the house of his sanctuary. There was no pity for adolescents, nor virgins, nor the elderly, nor even for the disabled. Instead, he delivered them all into his hands.17 Onde ch' egli indusse sopra loro il re dei Caldei, e i loro giovani uccise di coltello nella casa del suo santuario; e non ebbe misericordia di fanciullo nè di vergine, nè di vecchio nè di decrepito, ma tutti gli diede nelle sue mani.
And all the vessels of the house of Lord, as much the greater as the lesser, and the treasures of the temple, and of the king and the rulers, he carried away to Babylon.18 E tutte le vasa della casa del Signore, così i maggiori come i minori, e' tesori del tempio e del re e de' principi, portò in Babilonia.
The enemies set fire to the house of God, and they destroyed the wall of Jerusalem. They burned down all the towers. And whatever was precious, they demolished.19 E' nemici arsero la casa del Signore, e disfecero il muro di Ierusalem, e arsero tutte le torri, e tutto ciò che v' era prezioso rubarono.
If anyone had escaped from the sword, he was led into Babylon. And he served the king and his sons, until the king of Persia would command,20 E qualunque v'era iscampato del coltello fu menato in Babilonia, e servì al re e a' suoi figliuoli, tanto che signoreggiò il re de' Persi,
and the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah would be fulfilled, and the land would celebrate her Sabbaths. For during all the days of the desolation, she kept a Sabbath, until the seventy years were completed.21 e che fu compiuto il sermone del Signore, il quale avea detto per la bocca di Ieremia, che la terra celebrasse i suoi sabbati; però che tutto il tempo della desolazione fecero il sabbato, tanto che furono compiuti i settanta anni.
Then, in the first year of Cyrus, the king of the Persians, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah, the Lord stirred up the heart of Cyrus, the king of the Persians, who commanded this to be proclaimed throughout his entire kingdom, and also in writing, saying:22 E nel primo anno di Ciro re de' Persi a fornire il sermone del Signore, lo quale avea parlato per la bocca di Ieremia, suscitò il Signore lo spirito di Ciro re de' Persi; il quale comandò che per tutto il suo reame fosse predicato, eziandio per scritture, e si dicesse:
“Thus says Cyrus, the king of the Persians: The Lord, the God of heaven, has given to me all the kingdoms of the earth. And he has instructed me that I should build for him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judea. Who among you is from his entire people? May the Lord his God be with him, and let him ascend.”23 queste cose dice Ciro re de' Persi; tutti i regni della terra m' ha dati il Signore Iddio del cielo (e della terra), ed egli mi mandò, ch' io edificassi a lui casa in Ierusalem, la quale è in Giudea; e chi è di voi in tutto il popolo suo? che sia il Signore Iddio con esso lui, e ascenda.
