1 Joseph, realizing this, fell upon his father’s face, weeping and kissing him.	1 Josef warf sich über seinen Vater, weinte um ihn und küsste ihn.
2 And he instructed his servant physicians to embalm his father with aromatics.	2 Darauf befahl er den Ärzten, die ihm zu Dienste standen, seinen Vater einzubalsamieren. Die Ärzte balsamierten also Israel ein.
3 And while they were fulfilling his orders, forty days passed. For this was the method of embalming dead bodies. And Egypt wept for him for seventy days.	3 Darüber vergingen vierzig volle Tage, denn so lange dauerte die Einbalsamierung. Die Ägypter beweinten ihn siebzig Tage lang.
4 And when the time for mourning was fulfilled, Joseph spoke to the family of Pharaoh: “If I have found favor in your sight, speak to the ears of Pharaoh.	4 Als die Tage der Trauer vorüber waren, sagte Josef zu den Hofleuten des Pharao: Wenn ich euer Wohlwollen genieße, tragt dem Pharao dieses mein Anliegen vor:
5 For my father made me swear, saying: ‘See, I am dying. You shall bury me in my sepulcher which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.’ Therefore, I shall go up and bury my father, and then return.”	5 Mein Vater hat mich schwören lassen und gesagt: Ich muss sterben; in dem Grab, das ich mir in Kanaan angelegt habe, dort begrabt mich! Nun also möchte ich hinaufziehen und meinen Vater begraben; dann komme ich wieder zurück.
6 And Pharaoh said to him, “Go up and bury your father, just as he made you swear.”	6 Da sagte der Pharao: Zieh hinauf, begrabe deinen Vater, wie du geschworen hast.
7 So as he went up, all the elders of the house of Pharaoh went with him, along with every patriarch in the land of Egypt,	7 Josef zog hinauf, um seinen Vater zu begraben. Mit ihm zogen alle Hofleute des Pharao, die Ältesten seines Hofes und alle Ältesten Ägyptens,
8 and the house of Joseph with his brothers, except their little ones and flocks and also the herds, which they left behind in the land of Goshen.	8 das ganze Haus Josef, seine Brüder und das Haus seines Vaters. Nur ihre Kinder, ihre Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder ließen sie in Goschen zurück.
9 Likewise, he had in his company chariots and horsemen. And it became a crowd without restraint.	9 Auch die Wagen und die dazugehörige Mannschaft zogen mit ihm, sodass es ein sehr großer Zug wurde.
10 And they arrived at the threshing place of Atad, which is situated beyond the Jordan. There they spent seven full days celebrating the funeral rites with a great and vehement lamentation.	10 Als sie nach Goren-Atad jenseits des Jordan gekommen waren, hielten sie dort eine sehr große, würdige Totenklage; sieben Tage hielt er um seinen Vater Trauer.
11 And when the inhabitants of the land of Canaan had seen this, they said, “This is a great Lamentation for the Egyptians.” And for this reason, the name of that place was called, “The Lamentation of Egypt.”	11 Die Einheimischen, die Kanaaniter, beobachteten die Trauerfeier in Goren-Atad und sagten: Eine würdige Trauerfeier veranstalten da die Ägypter. Darum heißt der Ort Abel-Mizrajim (Ägyptertrauer); er liegt jenseits des Jordan.
12 And so, the sons of Jacob did just as he had instructed them.	12 Jakobs Söhne taten an Jakob so, wie er ihnen aufgetragen hatte.
13 And carrying him into the land of Canaan, they buried him in the double cave, which Abraham had bought along with its field, from Ephron the Hittite, as a possession for burial, opposite Mamre.	13 Sie brachten ihn nach Kanaan und begruben ihn in der Höhle des Grundstücks von Machpela. Abraham hatte das Grundstück bei Mamre als eigene Grabstätte von dem Hetiter Efron gekauft.
14 And Joseph returned into Egypt with his brothers and all those of his company, having buried his father.	14 Nachdem Josef seinen Vater begraben hatte, kehrte er nach Ägypten zurück, zusammen mit seinen Brüdern und allen, die mitgezogen waren, um seinen Vater zu begraben.
15 Now that he was dead, his brothers were afraid, and they said to one another: “Perhaps now he may remember the injury that he suffered and requite us for all the evil that we did to him.”	15 Als Josefs Brüder sahen, dass ihr Vater tot war, sagten sie: Wenn sich Josef nur nicht feindselig gegen uns stellt und uns alles Böse vergilt, das wir ihm getan haben.
16 So they sent a message to him, saying: “Your father instructed us before he died,	16 Deshalb ließen sie Josef wissen: Dein Vater hat uns, bevor er starb, aufgetragen:
17 that we should say these words to you from him: ‘I beg you to forget the wickedness of your brothers, and the sin and malice that they practiced against you.’ Likewise, we petition you to release the servants of the God of your father from this iniquity.” Hearing this, Joseph wept.	17 So sagt zu Josef: Vergib doch deinen Brüdern ihre Untat und Sünde, denn Schlimmes haben sie dir angetan. Nun also vergib doch die Untat der Knechte des Gottes deines Vaters! Als man ihm diese Worte überbrachte, musste Josef weinen.
18 And his brothers went to him. And reverencing prostrate on the ground, they said, “We are your servants.”	18 Seine Brüder gingen dann auch selbst hin, fielen vor ihm nieder und sagten: Hier sind wir als deine Sklaven.
19 And he answered them: “Do not be afraid. Are we able to resist the will of God?	19 Josef aber antwortete ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht! Stehe ich denn an Gottes Stelle?
20 You devised evil against me. But God turned it into good, so that he might exalt me, just as you presently discern, and so that he might bring about the salvation of many peoples.	20 Ihr habt Böses gegen mich im Sinne gehabt, Gott aber hatte dabei Gutes im Sinn, um zu erreichen, was heute geschieht: viel Volk am Leben zu erhalten.
21 Do not be afraid. I will pasture you and your little ones.” And he consoled them, and he spoke mildly and leniently.	21 Nun also fürchtet euch nicht! Ich will für euch und eure Kinder sorgen. So tröstete er sie und redete ihnen freundlich zu.
22 And he lived in Egypt with all his father’s house; and he survived for one hundred and ten years. And he saw the sons of Ephraim to the third generation. Likewise, the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born onto Joseph’s knees.	22 Josef blieb in Ägypten, er und das Haus seines Vaters. Josef wurde hundertzehn Jahre alt.
23 After these things happened, he said to his brothers: “God will visit you after my death, and he will make you ascend from this land into the land which he swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”	23 Er sah noch Efraims Söhne und Enkel. Auch die Söhne Machirs, des Sohnes Manasses, kamen auf Josefs Knien zur Welt.
24 And when he had made them swear and had said, “God will visit you; carry my bones with you from this place,”	24 Dann sprach Josef zu seinen Brüdern: Ich muss sterben. Gott wird sich euer annehmen, er wird euch aus diesem Land heraus und in jenes Land hinaufführen, das er Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Eid zugesichert hat.
25 he died, having completed one hundred and ten years of his life. And having been embalmed with aromatics, he was laid to rest in a coffin in Egypt.	25 Josef ließ die Söhne Israels schwören: Wenn Gott sich euer annimmt, dann nehmt meine Gebeine von hier mit hinauf!
	26 Josef starb im Alter von hundertzehn Jahren. Man balsamierte ihn ein und legte ihn in Ägypten in einen Sarg.
