Genesis 37

1 Now Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, where his father sojourned.	1 Яків же проживав у краю, де пробував його батько, в Ханаан-краю.
2 And these are his generations. Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, when he was still a boy. And he was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, the wives of his father. And he accused his brothers to their father of a most sinful crime.	2 Ось потомство Якова. Йосиф, маючи сімнадцять років, пас вівці зо своїми братами — а був він ще хлопець — із синами Білги та з синами Зілпи, жінок його батька. І цей Йосиф доносив своєму батькові лихі про них вістки.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had conceived him in his old age. And he made him a tunic, woven of many colors.	3 Ізраїль любив Йосифа більше, ніж усіх своїх синів, бо він народився за його старости, і справив йому квітчасту одежу.
4 Then his brothers, seeing that he was loved by his father more than all his other sons, hated him, and they were not able to say anything peacefully to him.	4 Брати ж його, бачивши, що батько любить його більше, ніж усіх братів, зненавиділи його, тож і не спроможні були з ним сумирно розмовляти.
5 Then it also happened that he recounted the vision of a dream to his brothers, for which reason a greater hatred began to be nurtured.	5 А ще мав Йосиф сон, і він оповів його своїм братам, через що вони ще більше зненавиділи його.
6 And he said to them, “Listen to my dream that I saw.	6 Каже їм: Послухайте, прошу, цей сон, що приснився мені:
7 I thought we were binding sheaves in the field. And my sheaf seemed to rise up and stand, and your sheaves, standing in a circle, reverenced my sheaf.”	7 сниться мені, оце в’яжемо ми снопи посеред поля. Аж тут підвівся мій сніп та й стоїть, а ваші снопи поставали навкруг нього й уклонилися моєму.
8 His brothers responded: “Would you be our king? Or will we be subject to your dominion?” Therefore, this matter of his dreams and words provided kindling to their envy and hatred.	8 То й кажуть до нього брати: Чи справді ти царюватимеш над нами, чи направду володітимеш нами? І зненавиділи його ще більше за його сни та за його слова.
9 Likewise, he saw another dream, which he explained to his brothers, saying, “I saw by a dream, as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars were reverencing me.”	9 Снився йому ще й другий сон; він і його розповів братам: Снився мені, каже, ще один сон, що от сонце, місяць і одинадцять зір уклонилися мені.
10 And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?”	10 І оповів він батькові своєму теє і своїм братам, а батько насварив його і сказав йому: Що то за сон, що тобі приснився? Чи то справді прийдемо ми, я і твоя мати й твої брати, щоб уклонитися тобі до землі?
11 Therefore, his brothers were envious of him. Yet truly, his father considered the matter silently.	11 Тим то його брати стали йому завидувати, а батько його запам’ятав собі те.
12 And while his brothers were lodging at Shechem, pasturing their father’s flocks,	12 Та пішли його брати пасти вівці свого батька в Сихем.
13 Israel said to him: “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” And when he answered,	13 А Ізраїль сказав до Йосифа: Чи не пасуть твої брати вівці в Сихемі? Йди лишень, я й тебе пошлю до них. Він же відповів йому: Я тут.
14 “I am ready,” he said to him, “Go, and see if everything is prospering with your brothers and the cattle, and report to me what is happening.” So, having been sent from the valley of Hebron, he arrived at Shechem.	14 І сказав батько до нього: Піди но, подивися, чи гаразд із твоїми братами, чи гаразд із вівцями, та принеси мені вістку. Та й послав його з долини Хеврону, й він пішов у Сихем.
15 And a man found him wandering in a field, and he asked him what he was seeking.	15 Зустрів його якийсь чоловік, він бо блукав у полі. Цей же чоловік спитав його: Чого шукаєш?
16 So he responded: “I seek my brothers. Tell me where they pasture the flocks.”	16 Він же відрік: Братів своїх шукаю. Скажи мені, будь ласка, де вони пасуть?
17 And the man said to him: “They have withdrawn from this place. But I heard them saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” Therefore, Joseph continued on after his brothers, and he found them at Dothan.	17 А чоловік відповів: Вони пішли звідсіля; чув бо я, як казали: Ходімо в Дотан. І пішов Йосиф за своїми братами й знайшов їх у Датані.
18 And, when they had seen him from afar, before he approached them, they decided to kill him.	18 Вони ж угледіли його здаля і, заки він до них наблизився, змовилися на нього, щоб його вбити.
19 And they said one to another: “Behold, the dreamer approaches.	19 Тож казав один до одного: Он іде той сновида!
20 Come, let us kill him and cast him into the old cistern. And let us say: ‘an evil wild beast has devoured him.’ And then it will become apparent what his dreams will do for him.”	20 Ходім та й убиймо його та й вкиньмо його в якусь копанку і скажемо: — лютий звір пожер його; тоді побачимо, що буде з його снів.
21 But Reuben, on hearing this, strove to free him from their hands, and he said:	21 Почув це Рувим і врятував його з їхніх рук, — сказавши: Не вбиваймо життя!
22 “Do not take away his life, nor shed blood. But throw him into this cistern, which is in the wilderness, and so keep your hands harmless.” But he said this, wanting to rescue him from their hands, so as to return him to his father.	22 Далі Рувим сказав до них: Не проливайте крови, вкиньте його в ту копанку, що в пустині, але руки на нього не накладайте. Це так, щоб його врятувати з їхніх рук і повернути його батькові.
23 And so, as soon as he came to his brothers, they very quickly stripped him of his tunic, which was ankle-length and woven of many colors,	23 І коли Йосиф прийшов до братів, вони здерли з нього квітчасту одежу, що була на ньому,
24 and they cast him into an old cistern, which held no water.	24 взяли його та й вкинули в копанку, копанка ж була порожня, води не було в ній.
25 And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ishmaelites, travelers coming from Gilead, with their camels, carrying spices, and resin, and oil of myrrh into Egypt.	25 І посідали вони їсти. Коли ж підвели свої очі, бачать — аж ось іде валка ізмаїльтян з Гілеаду, а верблюди їхні несуть бурштин, бальсам та ладан; ідуть і везуть усе те в Єгипет.
26 Therefore, Judah said to his brothers: “What will it profit us, if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?	26 Тоді каже Юда до своїх братів: Що нам з того, що вб’ємо нашого брата й прикриємо його кров?
27 It is better that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, and then our hands will not be defiled. For he is our brother and our flesh.” His brothers agreed to his words.	27 Нумо продаймо його ізмаїльтянам, рука ж наша нехай не буде на ньому, бо він наш брат, наше тіло. І послухали його брати.
28 And when the Midianite merchants were passing by, they drew him from the cistern, and they sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And these led him into Egypt.	28 Ішли ж мимо мідіянські люди, купці, а вони витягнули Йосифа з копанки та й продали ізмаїльтянам за двадцять срібняків; а ті повезли його в Єгипет.
29 And Reuben, returning to the cistern, did not find the boy.	29 Тоді повернувся Рувим до ями — аж нема Йосифа в ній. Він роздер на собі одіж,
30 And rending his garments, he went to his brothers and said, “The boy is not present, and so where shall I go?”	30 і, прийшовши до братів, каже: Хлопця немає, а я — куди піду?
31 Then they took his tunic, and they dipped it in the blood of a young goat, which they had killed,	31 І взяли вони одежу Йосифа, зарізали козеня та й намочили одежу в крові,
32 sending those who carried it to their father, and they said: “We found this. See whether it is the tunic of your son or not.”	32 і послали квітчасту одежу батькові з словами: Це ми знайшли. Пізнавай, чи одежа твого сина, чи ні.
33 And when the father acknowledged it, he said: “It is the tunic of my son. An evil wild beast has eaten him; a beast has devoured Joseph.”	33 Пізнав він її і сказав: Одіж мого сина! Звір лютий пожер його. Роздер напевно Йосифа!
34 And tearing his garments, he was clothed in haircloth, mourning his son for a long time.	34 Тоді Яків розірвав на собі одежу, накинув на бедра волосянницю та й сумував за своїм сином довго.
35 Then, when all of his sons gathered together to ease their father’s sorrow, he was not willing to accept consolation, but he said: “I will descend in mourning to my son in the underworld.” And while he persevered in weeping,	35 Посходилися всі його сини та всі його дочки розважати його, але він був невтішний, тільки говорив: Зійду бо, сумуючи, до свого сина, до Шеолу. І плакав за ним його батько.
36 the Midianites in Egypt sold Joseph to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, instructor of the soldiers.	36 А мідіяни продали Йосифа в Єгипті Потіфарові, двірському вельможі фараона, начальникові варти.
