Genesis 31

1 But afterwards, he heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, “Jacob has taken all that was our father’s, and being enlarged by his ability, he has become famous.”	1 Jacob se enteró de que los hijos de Labán andaban diciendo: «Jacob se ha apoderado de todos los bienes de nuestro padre, y a expensas de él ha conseguido toda esta riqueza».
2 Likewise, he observed that Laban’s face was not the same toward him as it was yesterday and the day before.	2 Y también advirtió que la actitud de Labán para con él ya no era la misma de antes.
3 Most importantly, the Lord was saying to him, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your generation, and I will be with you.”	3 Entonces el Señor le dijo: «Vuelve a la tierra de tus padres y de tu familia, y yo estaré contigo».
4 He sent and called for Rachel and Leah, in the field where he pastured the flocks,	4 Jacob mandó llamar a Raquel y a Lía para que fueran a encontrarse con él en el campo donde estaba el rebaño,
5 and he said to them: “I see that your father’s face is not the same toward me as it was yesterday and the day before. But the God of my father has been with me.	5 y le dijo: «He advertido que el padre de ustedes ya no se comporta conmigo como antes, pero el Dios de mi padre ha estado conmigo.
6 And you know that I have served your father with all my strength.	6 Ustedes saben muy bien que yo puse todo mi empeño en servir a mi suegro.
7 Even so, your father has circumvented me, and he has changed my wages ten times. And yet God has not permitted him to harm me.	7 Sin embargo, él se ha burlado de mí y ha cambiado diez veces mi salario. Pero Dios no le ha permitido que me hiciera ningún mal.
8 Whenever he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ all the sheep gave birth to speckled newborns. Yet truly, when he said the contrary, ‘You will take whatever is white for your wages,’ all the flocks gave birth to white ones.	8 Si él establecía: «Los animales manchados serán tu salario», todo el rebaño tenía crías manchadas; y si él decía: «Los animales rayados serán tu paga», todo el rebaño tenía crías rayadas.
9 And it is God who has taken your father’s substance and given it to me.	9 Así Dios lo despojó de su ganado y me lo dio a mí.
10 For after the time had arrived for the ewes to conceive, I lifted up my eyes, and I saw in my sleep that the males climbing on the females were of variegated, and spotted, and diverse colors.	10 Una vez, durante el período en que el rebaño entra en celo, yo tuve un sueño. De pronto vi que los chivos que cubrían a las cabras eran rayados, manchados o moteados.
11 And the Angel of God said to me in my sleep, ‘Jacob.’ And I responded, ‘Here I am.’	11 Y en el sueño, el Angel de Dios me llamó: «¡Jacob!». «Aquí estoy», le respondí.
12 And he said: ‘Lift up your eyes, and see that all the males climbing on the females are variegated, spotted, and also speckled. For I have seen all that Laban has done to you.	12 Entonces él me dijo: Fíjate bien: todos los chivos que cubren a las cabras son rayados, manchados o moteados, porque yo me he dado cuenta de todo lo que te hizo Labán.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the stone and made a vow to me. Now therefore arise, and depart from this land, returning to the land of your nativity.’ ”	13 Yo soy el Dios que se te apareció en Betel, allí donde tú ungiste una piedra conmemorativa y me hiciste un voto. Ahora levántate, sal de este país, y regresa a tu tierra natal».
14 And Rachel and Leah responded: “Have we anything left behind among the resources and inheritance of our father’s house?	14 Raquel y Lía le respondieron diciendo: «¿Tenemos todavía una parte y una herencia en la casa de nuestro padre?
15 Has he not considered us as foreigners, and sold us, and consumed our price?	15 ¿Acaso no nos ha tratado como a extrañas? No sólo nos ha vendido, sino que además se ha gastado el dinero que recibió de nosotras.
16 But God has taken our father’s riches and handed these to us and to our sons. Therefore, do all that God has instructed you.”	16 Sí, toda la riqueza que Dios le ha quitado a nuestro padre es nuestra y de nuestros hijos. Procede como Dios te lo ha ordenado».
17 And so Jacob rose up, and having placed the children and his wives upon camels, he went forth.	17 Inmediatamente Jacob hizo montar en los camellos a sus hijos y a sus mujeres,
18 And he took all his substance and flocks, and whatever he had acquired in Mesopotamia, and he journeyed to his father Isaac, in the land of Canaan.	18 y se llevó todo su ganado y todos sus bienes –el ganado de su propiedad, que había adquirido en Padán Aram– para ir a la tierra de Canaán, donde se encontraba Isaac, su padre.
19 At that time, Laban had gone to shear the sheep, and so Rachel stole her father’s idols.	19 Como Labán estaba ausente, esquilando sus ovejas, Raquel se adueñó de los ídolos familiares que pertenecían a su padre.
20 And Jacob was not willing to confess to his father-in-law that he was fleeing.	20 Y Jacob engañó a Labán, el arameo, porque huyó sin decirle una palabra.
21 And when he had gone away with all such things that were justly his, and, having crossed the river, was continuing on toward Mount Gilead,	21 Así escapó Jacob con todo lo que tenía, y apenas estuvo al otro lado del Eufrates, se dirigió hacia la montaña de Galaad.
22 it was reported to Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled.	22 Al tercer día notificaron a Labán que Jacob había huido.
23 And taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days. And he overtook him at Mount Gilead.	23 Labán reunió a sus parientes y lo persiguió durante siete días, hasta que al fin lo alcanzó en la montaña de Galaad.
24 And he saw in a dream, God saying to him, “Beware that you not speak anything harsh against Jacob.”	24 Pero esa misma noche, Dios se apareció en sueños a Labán, el arameo, y le dijo: «Cuidado con entrometerse para nada en los asuntos de Jacob».
25 And now Jacob had pitched his tent at the mountain. And when he, with his brothers, had overtaken him, he set his tent at the same place at Mount Gilead.	25 Cuando Labán alcanzó a Jacob, este había instalado su campamento en la montaña. Labán, por su parte, acampó en la montaña de Galaad.
26 And he said to Jacob: “Why have you acted this way, departing from me in secret, with my daughters like captives of the sword?	26 Labán dijo entonces a Jacob: «¿Qué has hecho? ¡Me has engañado y te has llevado a mis hijas como prisioneras de guerra!
27 Why would you want to flee without my knowledge and without telling me, though I might have led you forward with gladness, and songs, and timbrels, and lyres?	27 ¿Por qué has huido ocultamente y me has engañado? Si me hubieras avisado, yo te habría despedido con una fiesta, con cantos y con música de tambores y liras.
28 You have not permitted me to kiss my sons and daughters. You have acted foolishly. And now, indeed,	28 Pero tú ni siquiera me has permitido saludar con un beso a mis nietos y a mis hijas. Realmente te has comportado como un insensato.
29 my hand has power to repay you with harm. But the God of your father said to me yesterday, ‘Beware that you not speak anything stern against Jacob.’	29 Yo tengo poder suficiente para hacerles una mala jugada a todos ustedes. Sin embargo, ayer por la noche, el Dios de tu padre me dijo: «Cuidado con entrometerte para nada en los asuntos de Jacob».
30 It may be that you desired to go to your own, and that you longed for the house of your father. But why have you stolen my gods?”	30 De todas maneras, está bien: tú te has ido porque añorabas tu casa paterna. Pero ¿por qué robaste mis dioses?».
31 Jacob answered: “I set out, unknown to you, because I feared that you might take away your daughters by violence.	31 «Yo estaba atemorizado, respondió Jacob a Labán, pensando que podías quitarme a tus hijas.
32 But, since you accuse me of theft, with whomever you will find your gods, let him be slain in the sight of our brothers. Search; anything of yours that you will find with me, take it away.” Now when he said this, he did not know that Rachel had stolen the idols.	32 Y en lo que respecta a tus dioses, si llegas a encontrarlos en poder de alguno de nosotros, ese no quedará con vida. Revisa bien, en presencia de nuestros hermanos, a ver si hay aquí algo que te pertenece, y llévatelo». Por supuesto, Jacob ignoraba que Raquel los había robado.
33 And so Laban, entering the tent of Jacob, and of Leah, and of both the handmaids, did not find them. And when he had entered the tent of Rachel,	33 Labán entró en la carpa de Jacob, en la de Lía, y en la de las dos esclavas, y no encontró nada. Al salir de la carpa de Lía, entró en la de Raquel.
34 she quickly hid the idols under the camel’s bedding, and she sat upon them. And when he had searched the entire tent and found nothing,	34 Pero Raquel había tomado los ídolos, los había guardado en la montura del camello y se había sentado encima de ellos. Después que Labán registró toda la carpa sin obtener ningún resultado,
35 she said: “Do not be angry, my lord, that I am unable to rise up in your sight, because it has now happened to me according to the custom of women.” So his careful search was thwarted.	35 Raquel dijo a su padre: «Que mi señor no lo tome a mal; pero no puedo ponerme de pie ante él, porque me sucede lo que es habitual en las mujeres». Y por más que buscó, no logró encontrar los ídolos.
36 And Jacob, being inflated, said with contention: “For which fault of mine, or for what sin of mine, have you become so enraged against me	36 Jacob se llenó de indignación, y reprochó a Labán diciéndole: «¿Qué delito o falta he cometido para que me acoses de esa manera?
37 and searched all the items of my house? What have you found from all the substance of your house? Place it here before my brothers, and your brothers, and let them judge between me and you.	37 Acabas de registrar todas mis cosas y no has encontrado un solo objeto que te pertenezca. Si lo has encontrado, colócalo aquí, delante de tu gente y de la mía, y que ellos decidan quién de nosotros tiene razón.
38 For what reason have I been with you for twenty years? Your ewes and she-goats were not barren; the rams of your flocks I did not consume.	38 En los veinte años que estuve contigo, tus ovejas y tus cabras nunca abortaron, y jamás me comí los carneros de tu rebaño.
39 Neither did I reveal to you what was seized by the wild beast. I replaced all that was damaged. Whatever was lost by theft, you collected it from me.	39 Nunca te llevé un animal despedazado por las fieras: yo mismo debía reparar la pérdida, porque tú me reclamabas lo que había sido robado tanto de día como de noche.
40 Day and night, I was burned by heat and by frost, and sleep fled from my eyes.	40 De día me consumía el calor, y de noche, la helada; y el sueño huía de mis ojos.
41 And in this way, for twenty years, I have served you in your house: fourteen for your daughters, and six for your flocks. You have also changed my wages ten times.	41 De los veinte años que pasé en tu casa, catorce trabajé por tus dos hijas, y seis por tu rebaño, y tú me cambiaste el salario diez veces.
42 If the God of my father Abraham and the fear of Isaac had not been close to me, perhaps by now you would have sent me away naked. But God looked kindly on my affliction and the labor of my hands, and he rebuked you yesterday.”	42 Y si el Dios de mi padre –el Dios de Abraham y el Terror de Isaac– no hubiera estado de mi parte, me habrías despedido con las manos vacías. Pero Dios ha visto mi opresión y mi fatiga, y ayer por la noche pronunció su fallo».
43 Laban answered him: “My daughters and sons, and your flocks, and all that you discern are mine. What can I do to my sons and grandchildren?	43 Labán replicó a Jacob: «Estas mujeres son mis hijas, y estos muchachos, mis nietos; y también es mío el rebaño. Todo lo que ves me pertenece. Pero ¿qué puedo hacer ahora contra mis hijas y mis nietos?
44 Come, therefore, let us enter into a pact, so that it may be a testimony between me and you.”	44 Por eso, hagamos una alianza, y que haya un testigo entre tú y yo».
45 And so Jacob took a stone, and he set it up as a memorial.	45 Entonces Jacob tomó una piedra y la erigió como piedra conmemorativa.
46 And he said to his brothers, “Bring stones.” And they, gathering together stones, made a tomb, and they ate upon it.	46 Labán por su parte, dijo a sus hermanos: «Recojan unas piedras». Ellos las recogieron, las amontonaron y comieron allí, sobre el montón de piedras.
47 And Laban called it, ‘Tomb of Witness,’ and Jacob, ‘Pile of Testimony;’ each of them according to the fitness of his own language.	47 Y Labán le puso el nombre de Iegar Sahadutá, mientras que Jacob lo llamó Galed.
48 And Laban said: “This tomb will be a witness between me and you this day.” (And for this reason, its name has been called Gilead, that is, ‘Tomb of Witness.’)	48 Después Labán declaró: «Este montón de piedras será siempre un testigo entre tú y yo, como lo es ahora». Por eso lo llamó Galed.
49 “May the Lord consider and judge between us, when we will have withdrawn from one another.	49 Además, le puso el nombre de Mispá, porque dijo: «Que el Señor nos vigile a los dos, cuando estemos lejos el uno del otro:
50 If you afflict my daughters, and if you bring in other wives over them, no one is a witness of our words except God, who understands beforehand.”	50 si tú maltratas a mis hijas o te unes a otras mujeres además de ellas –aunque no haya nadie entre nosotros– recuerda que Dios está como testigo entre tú y yo».
51 And again he said to Jacob. “Lo, this tomb and the stone that I have set up between me and you,	51 Luego añadió: «Mira este montón de piedras, y mira la piedra conmemorativa que yo erigí entre tú y yo:
52 will be a witness. This tomb,” I say, “and the stone, they are for testimony, in case either I cross beyond it going toward you, or you cross beyond it thinking to harm me.	52 una y otra cosa serán testigos de que ninguno de los dos iremos más allá de este montón de piedras y de esta piedra conmemorativa, con malas intenciones.
53 May the God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” Therefore, Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.	53 Que el Dios de Abraham y el Dios de Najor sea nuestro juez». Entonces Jacob prestó un juramento por el Terror de Isaac.
54 And after he had immolated sacrifices on the mountain, he called his brothers to eat bread. And when they had eaten, they lodged there.	54 Luego ofreció un sacrificio sobre la Montaña, e invitó a sus hermanos a participar del banquete. Ellos comieron y pasaron la noche en la Montaña.
55 In truth, Laban rose up in the night, and he kissed his sons and daughters, and he blessed them. And he returned to his place.
