1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah that none of them would give his daughter in marriage to anyone from Benjamin.	1 Les Israélites avaient fait ce serment à Mispa: “Personne d’entre nous ne donnera sa fille comme femme à quelqu’un de Benjamin.”
2 So the people went to Bethel and remained there before God until evening, raising their voices in bitter lament.	2 Ils se réunirent à Béthel et restèrent devant Dieu jusqu’au soir avec des cris et de grandes lamentations. Ils disaient:
3 They said, "LORD, God of Israel, why has it come to pass in Israel that today one tribe of Israel should be lacking?"	3 “Yahvé, notre Dieu, qu’est-il donc arrivé en Israël! Une tribu est manquante aujourd’hui!
4 Early the next day the people built an altar there and offered holocausts and peace offerings.	4 Le lendemain le peuple se leva de bon matin; ils construisirent un autel et offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion.”
5 Then the Israelites asked, "Are there any among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up to the LORD for the assembly?" For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who did not go up to the LORD at Mizpah should be put to death without fail.	5 Puis les Israélites dirent: “Parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël, y en a-t-il une qui ne soit pas venue à l’assemblée devant Yahvé?” Car on avait fait un serment solennel: Si quelqu’un ne monte pas à Mispa devant Yahvé, il sera mis à mort.
6 The Israelites were disconsolate over their brother Benjamin and said, "Today one of the tribes of Israel has been cut off.	6 Les Israélites étaient fort affligés pour Benjamin leur frère, ils se disaient: “Aujourd’hui une tribu a été retranchée d’Israël.
7 What can we do about wives for the survivors, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?"	7 Que pouvons-nous faire pour que ceux d’entre eux qui restent aient des femmes, puisque nous avons juré devant Yahvé de ne pas leur donner nos filles en mariage?”
8 And when they asked whether anyone among the tribes of Israel had not come up to the LORD in Mizpah, they found that none of the men of Jabesh-gilead had come to the encampment for the assembly.	8 C’est alors qu’ils demandèrent: “Y en a-t-il une parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël, qui ne soit pas montée vers Yahvé à Mispa?” Ils virent que personne de Yabech en Galaad n’était venu à l’assemblée.
9 A roll call of the army established that none of the inhabitants of that city were present.	9 En effet, on avait recensé toute la population et il n’y avait là personne de Yabech en Galaad.
10 The community, therefore, sent twelve thousand warriors with orders to go to Jabesh-gilead and put those who lived there to the sword, including the women and children.	10 La communauté envoya là-bas 12 000 hommes, tous des gens solides, avec cet ordre: “Allez! Vous passerez au fil de l’épée les habitants de Yabech en Galaad ainsi que les femmes et les petits enfants:
11 They were told to include under the ban all males and every woman who was not still a virgin.	11 tout mâle et toute femme qui a eu des relations avec un homme sera voué à l’anathème, mais vous laisserez en vie celles qui sont vierges.” Ils firent ainsi.
12 Finding among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, who had had no relations with men, they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.	12 Ils trouvèrent dans la population de Yabech en Galaad 400 filles qui n’avaient pas eu de relations avec un homme, et ils les ramenèrent au camp établi à Silo, au pays de Canaan.
13 Then the whole community sent a message to the Benjaminites at the rock Rimmon, offering them peace.	13 Alors la communauté envoya prévenir les gens de Benjamin qui étaient au Rocher-de-Rimon et l’on fit la paix.
14 When Benjamin returned at that time, they gave them as wives the women of Jabesh-gilead whom they had spared; but these proved to be not enough for them.	14 Les Benjaminites revinrent donc et on leur donna les femmes de Yabech de Galaad qu’on avait laissées en vie. Mais il n’y en avait pas assez pour eux.
15 The people were still disconsolate over Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.	15 De nouveau le peuple fut pris de pitié pour Benjamin, car Yahvé avait fait une brèche parmi les tribus d’Israël.
16 And the elders of the community said, "What shall we do for wives for the survivors? For every woman in Benjamin has been put to death."	16 Les anciens de la communauté dirent: “Que pouvons-nous faire pour ceux qui restent, pour qu’ils aient des femmes, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été massacrées?”
17 They said, "Those of Benjamin who survive must have heirs, else one of the Israelite tribes will be wiped out.	17 Ils décidèrent ceci: “Les survivants garderont toute la terre qui appartient à Benjamin, de façon qu’aucune tribu ne soit retranchée d’Israël.
18 Yet we cannot give them any of our daughters in marriage, because the Israelites have sworn, 'Cursed be he who gives a woman to Benjamin!'"	18 Cependant nous ne pouvons pas leur donner nos filles en mariage, puisque les Israélites ont fait ce serment: ‘Maudit soit celui qui donnera sa fille à Benjamin.’ ”
19 Then they thought of the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh, north of Bethel, east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.	19 Alors ils pensèrent: “C’est bientôt la fête de Yahvé, celle qui a lieu chaque année à Silo. (Silo est au nord de Béthel, à l’est de la route qui va de Béthel à Sichem et au sud de Lébona)”
20 And they instructed the Benjaminites, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards.	20 Et ils firent cette proposition aux Benjaminites: “Allez vous cacher dans les vignes.
21 When you see the girls of Shiloh come out to do their dancing, leave the vineyards and each of you seize one of the girls of Shiloh for a wife, and go to the land of Benjamin.	21 Lorsque vous verrez les filles de Silo sortir pour danser en chœurs, vous sortirez des vignes, vous enlèverez chacun une des filles de Silo et vous regagnerez le pays de Benjamin.
22 When their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we shall say to them, 'Release them to us as a kindness, since we did not take a woman apiece in the war. Had you yourselves given them these wives, you would now be guilty.'"	22 Si jamais leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre à nous, nous leur dirons: “Laissez-les donc tranquilles, vous voyez bien que nous n’avons pu prendre une femme pour chacun d’eux au cours de la guerre. Ce n’est pas vous qui les leur avez données, donc vous n’avez pas été infidèles à votre serment.”
23 The Benjaminites did this; they carried off a wife for each of them from their raid on the dancers, and went back to their own territory, where they rebuilt and occupied the cities.	23 Les Benjaminites firent comme on leur disait pour prendre le nombre de femmes qui correspondait au leur. Ils les enlevèrent parmi celles qui étaient venues danser. Puis ils repartirent et retournèrent sur leurs terres. Là ils rebâtirent les villes et s’y installèrent.
24 Also at that time the Israelites dispersed; each of them left for his own heritage in his own clan and tribe.	24 À ce moment-là les Israélites quittèrent les lieux et s’en allèrent, chacun dans sa tribu et son propre clan, sur leurs propres terres.
25 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what he thought best.	25 En ce temps-là il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël et chacun faisait ce qui lui plaisait.
