NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
The LORD said to Moses,1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen dicens:
"Avenge the Israelites on the Midianites, and then you shall be taken to your people."2 “ Ulciscere filios Israel de Madianitis et sic colligeris ad populum tuum ”.
So Moses told the people, "Select men from your midst and arm them for war, to attack the Midianites and execute the LORD'S vengeance on them.3 Statimque Moyses: “ Armate, inquit, ex vobis viros ad pugnam, qui possint ultionem Domini expetere de Madianitis.
From each of the tribes of Israel you shall send a band of one thousand men to war."4 Mille viri de singulis tribubus eligantur ex Israel, qui mittantur ad bellum ”.
From the clans of Israel, therefore, a thousand men of each tribe were levied, so that there were twelve thousand men armed for war.5 Dederuntque millenos de singulis tribubus, id est duodecim milia expeditorum ad pugnam,
Moses sent them out on the campaign, a thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest for the campaign, who had with him the sacred vessels and the trumpets for sounding the alarm.6 quos misit Moyses cum Phinees filio Eleazari sacerdotis. Vasa quoque sancta et tubas ad clangendum tradidit ei.
They waged war against the Midianites, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and killed every male among them.7 Cumque pugnassent contra Madianitas, sicut praeceperat Dominus Moysi, omnes mares occiderunt
Besides those slain in battle, they killed the five Midianite kings: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba; and they also executed Balaam, son of Beor, with the sword.8 et reges eorum Evi et Recem et Sur et Hur et Rebe, quinque principes gentis, Balaam quoque filium Beor interfecerunt gladio;
But the Israelites kept the women of the Midianites with their little ones as captives, and all their herds and flocks and wealth as spoil,9 ceperuntque mulieres eorum et parvulos. Omniaque pecora et cunctam supellectilem, quidquid habere potuerant, depopulati sunt:
while they set on fire all the towns where they had settled and all their encampments.10 tam urbes quam viculos et castra flamma consumpsit;
Then they took all the booty, with the people and beasts they had captured, and brought the captives, together with the spoils and booty,11 et tulerunt praedam et universa, quae ceperant, tam ex hominibus quam ex iumentis,
to Moses and the priest Eleazar and to the Israelite community at their camp on the plains of Moab, along the Jericho stretch of the Jordan.12 et adduxerunt captivos, spolia et praedam ad Moysen et Eleazarum sacerdotem et ad omnem congregationem filiorum Israel ad castra in campestribus Moab iuxta Iordanem contra Iericho.
When Moses and the priest Eleazar, with all the princes of the community, went outside the camp to meet them,13 Egressi sunt autem Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos et omnes principes synagogae in occursum eorum extra castra.
Moses became angry with the officers of the army, the clan and company commanders, who were returning from combat.14 Iratusque Moyses principibus exercitus, tribunis et centurionibus, qui venerant de bello,
"So you have spared all the women!" he exclaimed.15 ait: “ Cur omnes feminas reservastis?
"Why, they are the very ones who on Balaam's advice prompted the unfaithfulness of the Israelites toward the LORD in the Peor affair, which began the slaughter of the LORD'S community.16 Nonne istae sunt, quae deceperunt filios Israel ad suggestionem Balaam et praevaricari vos fecerunt in Dominum super peccato Phegor, unde et percussus est populus Domini?
Slay, therefore, every male child and every woman who has had intercourse with a man.17 Ergo cunctos interficite parvulos generis masculini et omnes mulieres, quae noverunt viros in coitu, iugulate;
But you may spare and keep for yourselves all girls who had no intercourse with a man.18 puellas autem et omnes feminas virgines reservate vobis.
"Moreover, you shall stay outside the camp for seven days, and those of you who have slain anyone or touched anyone slain in battle shall purify yourselves on the third and on the seventh day. This applies both to you and to your captives.19 Et vos manete extra castra septem diebus; qui occiderit hominem vel occisum tetigerit, lustrabitur die tertio et septimo, vos et captivi vestri.
You shall also purify every article of cloth, leather, goats' hair, or wood."20 Et de omni praeda, sive vestimentum fuerit sive aliquid in utensilia praeparatum de caprarum pellibus et pilis et ligno, lustrabitis ”.
Eleazar the priest told the soldiers who had returned from combat: "This is what the law, as prescribed by the LORD to Moses, ordains:21 Eleazar quoque sacerdos ad viros exercitus, qui pugnaverant, sic locutus est: “ Hoc est praeceptum legis, quod mandavit Dominus Moysi:
Whatever can stand fire, such as gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,22 Aurum et argentum et aes et ferrum et stannum et plumbum,
you shall put into the fire, that it may become clean; however, it must also be purified with lustral water. But whatever cannot stand fire you shall put into the water.23 omne, quod potest transire per flammas, igne purgabitur; quidquid autem ignem non potest sustinere, aqua expiationis sanctificabitur.
On the seventh day you shall wash your clothes, and then you will again be clean. After that you may enter the camp."24 Et lavabitis vestimenta vestra die septimo, et purificati postea castra intrabitis ”.
The LORD said to Moses:25 Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen:
"With the help of the priest Eleazar and of the heads of the ancestral houses, count up all the human captives and the beasts that have been taken;26 “ Tollite summam eorum, quae capta sunt, ab homine usque ad pecus, tu et Eleazar sacerdos et principes familiarum;
then divide them evenly, giving half to those who took active part in the war by going out to combat, and half to the rest of the community.27 dividesque ex aequo praedam inter eos, qui pugnaverunt egressique sunt ad bellum, et inter omnem congregationem.
You shall levy a tax for the LORD on the warriors who went out to combat: one out of every five hundred persons, oxen, asses and sheep28 Et separabis partem Domino ab his, qui pugnaverunt et fuerunt in bello, unam animam de quingentis tam ex hominibus quam ex bobus et asinis et ovibus
in their half of the spoil you shall turn over to the priest Eleazar as a contribution to the LORD.29 et dabis eam Eleazaro sacerdoti, quia praelibatio Domini sunt.
From the Israelites' half you shall take one out of every fifty persons, and the same from the different beasts, oxen, asses and sheep, and give them to the Levites, who have charge of the LORD'S Dwelling."30 Ex media quoque parte filiorum Israel accipies quinquagesimum caput hominum et boum et asinorum et ovium cunctorum animantium et dabis ea Levitis, qui excubant in custodiis habitaculi Domini ”.
So Moses and the priest Eleazar did this, as the LORD had commanded Moses.31 Feceruntque Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos, sicut praeceperat Dominus.
This booty, what was left of the loot which the soldiers had taken, amounted to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,32 Fuit autem praeda, quae supererat, quam exercitus ceperat, ovium sescenta septuaginta quinque milia,
seventy-two thousand oxen,33 boum septuaginta duo milia,
sixty-one thousand asses,34 asinorum sexaginta milia et mille,
and thirty-two thousand girls who were still virgins.35 animae hominum sexus feminei, quae non cognoverant viros, triginta duo milia.
The half that fell to those who had gone out to combat was: three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,36 Dataque est media pars his, qui in proelio fuerant, ovium trecenta triginta septem milia quingentae,
of which six hundred and seventy-five fell as tax to the LORD;37 e quibus in partem Domini supputatae sunt oves sescentae septuaginta quinque,
thirty-six thousand oxen, of which seventy-two fell as tax to the LORD;38 et de bobus triginta sex milibus, boves septuaginta et duo,
thirty thousand five hundred asses, of which sixty-one fell as tax to the LORD;39 de asinis triginta milibus quingentis, asini sexaginta unus,
and sixteen thousand persons, of whom thirty-two fell as tax to the LORD.40 de animabus hominum sedecim milibus, cesserunt in partem Domini triginta duae animae.
The taxes contributed to the LORD, Moses gave to the priest Eleazar, as the LORD had commanded him.41 Tradiditque Moyses tributum praelibationis Domini Eleazaro sacerdoti, sicut fuerat ei imperatum.
The half for the other Israelites, which fell to the community when Moses had taken it from the soldiers, was:42 Ex media vero parte filiorum Israel, quam separaverat a parte eorum, qui in proelio fuerant,
From this, the Israelites' share, Moses, as the LORD had ordered, took one out of every fifty, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites, who had charge of the LORD'S Dwelling.47 tulit Moyses quinquagesimum caput et dedit Levitis, qui excubabant in habitaculo Domini, sicut praeceperat Dominus.
Then the officers who had been clan and company commanders of the army came up to Moses48 Cumque accessissent principes exercitus ad Moysen, tribuni centurionesque, dixerunt:
and said to him, "Your servants have counted up the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.49 “ Nos servi tui recensuimus numerum pugnatorum, quos habuimus sub manu nostra, et ne unus quidem defuit.
So, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD, each of us will bring as an offering to the LORD some gold article he has picked up, such as an anklet, a bracelet, a ring, an earring, or a necklace."50 Ob hanc causam offerimus in donariis Domini singuli, quod auri potuimus invenire, periscelidas et armillas, anulos et inaures ac muraenulas, ad placandum pro nobis Dominum ”.
Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, all of it in well-wrought articles.51 Susceperuntque Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos aurum in diversis speciebus;
The gold that they gave as a contribution to the LORD amounted in all to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. This was from the clan and company commanders;52 omne aurum, quod elevaverunt Domino, pondo sedecim milia septingentos quinquaginta siclos, a tribunis et centurionibus.
what the common soldiers had looted each one kept for himself.53 Unusquisque enim, quod in praeda rapuerat, suum erat.
Moses, then, and the priest Eleazar accepted the gold from the clan and company commanders, and put it in the meeting tent as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.54 Et susceptum intulerunt in tabernaculum conventus in monumentum filiorum Israel coram Domino.
