NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
1 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, content and prosperous.1 Ego Nabuchodonosor quietus eram in domo mea et florens in palatio meo;
2 I had a terrifying dream as I lay in bed, and the images and the visions of my mind frightened me.2 somnium vidi, quod perterruit me, et cogitationes in stratu meo et visionescapitis mei conturbaverunt me.
3 So I issued a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me to give the interpretation of the dream.3 Et per me propositum est decretum, utintroducerentur in conspectu meo cuncti sapientes Babylonis, ut solutionemsomnii indicarent mihi.
4 When the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and astrologers had come in, I related the dream before them; but none of them could tell me its meaning.4 Tunc ingrediebantur harioli, magi, Chaldaei etharuspices; et somnium narravi in conspectu eorum, et solutionem eius nonindicaverunt mihi;
5 Finally there came before me Daniel, whose name is Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy God. I repeated the dream to him:5 donec denique ingressus est in conspectu meo Daniel, cuinomen Baltassar secundum nomen dei mei et qui habet spiritum deorum sanctorum insemetipso. Et somnium coram ipso locutus sum:
6 "Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy God is in you and no mystery is too difficult for you; tell me the meaning of the visions that I saw in my dream.6 Baltassar, princeps hariolorum,quem ego scio quod spiritum deorum sanctorum habeas in te, et omne sacramentumnon est impossibile tibi, visiones somnii mei, quas vidi, et solutionem eiusnarra.
7 "These were the visions I saw while in bed: I saw a tree of great height at the center of the world.7 Visio capitis mei in cubili meo:
Videbam, et ecce arbor in medio terrae,
et altitudo eius nimia.
8 It was large and strong, with its top touching the heavens, and it could be seen to the ends of the earth.8 Magna arbor et fortis,
et proceritas eius contingens caelum;
aspectus illius erat usque ad terminos universae terrae.
9 Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, providing food for all. Under it the wild beasts found shade, in its branches the birds of the air nested; all men ate of it.9 Folia eius pulcherrima,
et fructus eius nimius,
et esca universorum in ea.
Subter eam habitabant bestiae agri,
et in ramis eius conversabantur volucres caeli,
et ex ea vescebatur omnis caro.
10 In the vision I saw while in bed, a holy sentinel came down from heaven,10 Videbam in visione capitis mei super stratum meum,
et ecce vigil et sanctus de caelo descendit.
11 and cried out: " 'Cut down the tree and lop off its branches, strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit; let the beasts flee its shade, and the birds its branches.11 Clamavit fortiter et sic ait:
“Succidite arborem et praecidite ramos eius,
excutite folia eius et dispergite fructus eius.
Fugiant bestiae de sub ea,
et volucres de ramis eius.
12 But leave in the earth its stump and roots, fettered with iron and bronze, in the grass of the field. Let him be bathed with the dew of heaven; his lot be to eat, among beasts, the grass of the earth.12 Verumtamen germen radicum eius in terra sinite
et in vinculo ferreo et aereo in herbis agri,
et rore caeli tingatur,
et cum feris pars eius in herba terrae.
13 Let his mind be changed from the human; let him be given the sense of a beast, till seven years pass over him.13 Cor eius ab humano commutetur,
et cor ferae detur ei,
et septem tempora mutentur super eum.
14 By decree of the sentinels is this decided, by order of the holy ones, this sentence; That all who live may know that the Most High rules over the kingdom of men: He can give it to whom he will, or set over it the lowliest of men.'14 In sententia vigilum decretum est,
et sermo sanctorum petitio,
ut cognoscant viventes
quoniam dominatur Excelsus in regno hominum
et, cuicumque voluerit, dabit illud
et humillimum hominem constituet super eo”.
15 "This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me its meaning. Although none of the wise men in my kingdom can tell me the meaning, you can, because the spirit of the holy God is in you."15 Hoc somnium vidi ego rex Nabuchodonosor. Tu ergo, Baltassar, interpretationemnarra, quia omnes sapientes regni mei non queunt solutionem edicere mihi; tuautem potes, quia spiritus deorum sanctorum in te est ”.
16 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was appalled for a while, terrified by his thoughts. "Belteshazzar," the king said to him, "let not the dream or its meaning terrify you."16 Tunc Daniel, cuius nomen Baltassar, obstupuit quasi una hora, et cogitationeseius conturbabant eum. Respondens autem rex ait: “ Baltassar, somnium etinterpretatio eius non conturbent te ”. Respondit Baltassar et dixit: “Domine mi, somnium his, qui te oderunt, et interpretatio eius hostibus tuis sit.
17 "My lord," Belteshazzar replied, "this dream should be for your enemies, and its meaning for your foes. The large, strong tree that you saw, with its top touching the heavens, that could be seen by the whole earth,17 Arborem, quam vidisti sublimem atque robustam, cuius altitudo pertingit adcaelum, et aspectus illius in omnem terram,
18 which had beautiful foliage and abundant fruit, providing food for all, under which the wild beasts lived, and in whose branches the birds of the air dwelt--18 et rami eius pulcherrimi, etfructus eius nimius, et esca omnium in ea, subter eam habitantes bestiae agri,et in ramis eius commorantes aves caeli,
19 you are that tree, O king, large and strong! Your majesty has become so great as to touch the heavens, and your rule extends over the whole earth.19 tu es, rex, qui magnificatus es etinvaluisti, et magnitudo tua crevit et pervenit usque ad caelum, et potestas tuain terminos terrae.
20 As for the king's vision of a holy sentinel that came down from heaven and proclaimed: 'Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave in the earth its stump and roots, fettered with iron and bronze in the grass of the field; let him be bathed with the dew of heaven, and let his lot be among wild beasts till seven years pass over him'--Daniel 4:21 this is its meaning, O king; this is the sentence which the Most High has passed upon my lord king:20 Quod autem vidit rex vigilem et sanctum descendere decaelo et dicere: “Succidite arborem et dissipate illam; attamen germen radicumeius in terra dimittite, et vinculo ferreo et aereo in herbis agri, et rorecaeli conspergatur, et cum feris sit pars eius, donec septem tempora mutentursuper eum”,
21 haec est interpretatio, rex, et sententia Altissimi, quaepervenit super dominum meum regem:
22 You shall be cast out from among men and dwell with wild beasts; you shall be given grass to eat like an ox and be bathed with the dew of heaven; seven years shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules over the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.22 et eicient te ab hominibus, et cum bestiisferis erit habitatio tua, et fenum ut boves comedes et rore caeli infunderis;septem quoque tempora mutabuntur super te, donec scias quod dominetur Excelsussuper regnum hominum et, cuicumque voluerit, det illud.
23 The command that the stump and roots of the tree are to be left means that your kingdom shall be preserved for you, once you have learned it is heaven that rules.23 Quod autempraeceperunt, ut relinqueretur germen radicum eius, id est arboris, regnum tuumtibi manebit, postquam cognoveris potestatem caeli.
24 Therefore, O king, take my advice; atone for your sins by good deeds, and for your misdeeds by kindness to the poor; then your prosperity will be long."24 Quam ob rem, rex,consilium meum placeat tibi, et peccata tua eleemosynis redime et iniquitatestuas misericordiis pauperum; sic longitudo erit prosperitati tuae ”.
25 All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.25 Omnia haec venerunt super Nabuchodonosor regem.
26 Twelve months later, as he was walking on the roof of the royal palace in Babylon,26 Post finem mensiumduodecim in palatio regni Babylonis deambulabat;
27 the king said, "Babylon the great! Was it not I, with my great strength, who built it as a royal residence for my splendor and majesty?"27 responditque rex et ait: “Nonne haec est Babylon magna, quam ego aedificavi in domum regni, in roborefortitudinis meae et in gloria decoris mei? ”.
28 While these words were still on the king's lips, a voice spoke from heaven, "It has been decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar, that your kingdom is taken from you!28 Cum adhuc sermo esset in oreregis, vox de caelo ruit: “ Tibi dicitur, Nabuchodonosor rex: Regnum tuumtransiit a te,
29 You shall be cast out from among men, and shall dwell with wild beasts; you shall be given grass to eat like an ox, and seven years shall pass over you, until you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will."29 et ab hominibus te eicient, et cum bestiis feris erithabitatio tua: fenum quasi boves comedes; et septem tempora mutabuntur super te,donec scias quod dominetur Excelsus in regno hominum et, cuicumque voluerit, detillud ”.
30 At once this was fulfilled. Nebuchadnezzar was cast out from among men, he ate grass like an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle, and his nails like the claws of a bird.30 Eadem hora sermo completus est super Nabuchodonosor, et exhominibus abiectus est et fenum ut boves comedit, et rore caeli corpus eiusinfectum est, donec capilli eius in similitudinem aquilarum crescerent, etungues eius quasi avium.
31 When this period was over, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes to heaven; my reason was restored to me, and I blessed the Most High, I praised and glorified him who lives forever: His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures through all generations.31 “ Igitur post finem dierum ego Nabuchodonosor oculos meos ad caelum levavi,et sensus meus redditus est mihi, et Altissimo benedixi et Viventem insempiternum laudavi et glorificavi,
quia potestas eius potestas sempiterna,
et regnum eius in generationem et generationem;
32 All who live on the earth are counted as nothing; he does as he pleases with the powers of heaven as well as with those who live on the earth. There is no one who can stay his hand or say to him, "What have you done?"32 et omnes habitatores terrae apud eum in nihilum reputati sunt:
iuxta voluntatem enim suam facit
tam in virtutibus caeli quam in habitatoribus terrae,
et non est qui resistat manui eius
et dicat ei: “Quid facis?”.
33 At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and my splendor returned to me. My nobles and lords sought me out; I was restored to my kingdom, and became much greater than before.33 In ipso tempore sensus meus reversus est ad me, et ad honorem regni meimaiestas mea et splendor meus reversa sunt ad me; et optimates mei etmagistratus mei requisierunt me, et in regno meo constitutus sum, etmagnificentia amplior addita est mihi.
34 Therefore, I, Nebuchadnezzar, now praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because all his works are right and his ways just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.34 Nunc igitur ego Nabuchodonosor laudoet magnifico et glorifico Regem caeli, quia omnia opera eius veritas, et viaeeius iudicium, et gradientes in superbia potest humiliare ”.
