1 Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us, look, and see our disgrace:	1 Ricordati, o Signore, di quanto c'è accaduto: mira e considera la nostra ignominia.
2 Our inherited lands have been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.	2 La nostra eredità è passata a stranieri; le nostre case a sconosciuti.
3 We have become orphans, fatherless; widowed are our mothers.	3 Siam divenuti orfani senza padre; le madri nostre son come vedove.
4 The water we drink we must buy, for our own wood we must pay.	4 A prezzo di danaro abbiamo bevuta la nostra acqua, col danaro abbiamo comprate le nostre legna.
5 On our necks is the yoke of those who drive us; we are worn out, but allowed no rest.	5 Legati pel collo eravamo portati via, e agli stanchi non era concesso riposo.
6 To Egypt we submitted, and to Assyria, to fill our need of bread.	6 Tendemmo le mani all'Egitto e all'Assiria, per esser satollati di pane.
7 Our fathers, who sinned, are no more; but we bear their guilt.	7 I nostri padri peccarono e non son più, e noi ne abbiamo portate le iniquità.
8 Slaves rule over us; there is no one to rescue us from their hands.	8 I servi ci han dominati, nè ci fu chi da loro ci riscattasse.
9 At the peril of our lives we bring in our sustenance, in the face of the desert heat;	9 Procuravamo il nostro pane col pericolo della vita, affrontando la spada nel deserto.
10 Our skin is shriveled up, as though by a furnace, with the searing blasts of famine.	10 La nostra pelle è arsa come un forno dall'ardore della fame.
11 The wives in Zion were ravished by the enemy, the maidens in the cities of Judah;	11 Hanno umiliate le donne in Sion, e le vergini nella città di Giada.
12 Princes were gibbeted by them, elders shown no respect.	12 Per la loro mano sono stati impiccati i principi, non han portato rispetto ai vecchi.
13 The youths carry the millstones, boys stagger under their loads of wood;	13 Hanno abusato vergognosamente dei giovanetti, e i fanciulli son venuti meno sotto il bastone.
14 The old men have abandoned the gate, the young men their music.	14 Mancano gli anziani alla porta e i giovani nel coro dei sonatori.
15 The joy of our hearts has ceased, our dance has turned into mourning;	15 La gioia è scomparsa dal nostro cuore, le nostre musiche sono andate a finire in lutto,
16 The garlands have fallen from our heads: woe to us, for we have sinned!	16 è caduta la corona del nostro capo: guai a noi che abbiamo peccato!
17 Over this our hearts are sick, at this our eyes grow dim:	17 Per questo è divenuto tristo il nostro cuore, per questo si sono ottenebrati i nostri occhi.
18 That Mount Zion should be desolate, with jackals roaming there!	18 Per il monte Sion, che è desolato, e vi scorrazzano le volpi.
19 You, O LORD, are enthroned forever; your throne stands from age to age.	19 Ma tu, o Signore, rimarrai in eterno, il tuo trono per tutte le generazioni.
20 Why, then, should you forget us, abandon us so long a time?	20 E come? tu eterno ti dimenticherai di noi? Ci abbandonerai per tanto tempo?
21 Lead us back to you, O LORD, that we may be restored: give us anew such days as we had of old.	21 Facci tornare a te, o Signore, e torneremo, rinnovella i nostri giorni come altre volte.
22 For now you have indeed rejected us, and in full measure turned your wrath against us.	22 Ma tu ci hai rigettati del tutto, ti sei sdegnato senza misura contro di noi.
