NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
The Proverbs of Solomon: A wise son makes his father glad, but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.1 A wise son maketh the father glad: but a foolish son is the sorrow of his mother.
Ill-gotten treasures profit nothing, but virtue saves from death.2 Treasures of wickedness shall profit nothing: but justice shall deliver from death.
The LORD permits not the just to hunger, but the craving of the wicked he thwarts.3 The Lord will not afflict the soul of the just with famine, and he will disappoint the deceitful practices of the wicked.
The slack hand impoverishes, but the hand of the diligent enriches.4 The slothful hand hath wrought poverty: but the hand of the industrious getteth riches. He that trusteth to lies feedeth the winds: and the same runneth after birds that fly away.
A son who fills the granaries in summer is a credit; a son who slumbers during harvest, a disgrace.5 He that gathered in the harvest is a wise son: but he that snorteth in the summer, is the son of confusion.
Blessings are for the head of the just, but a rod for the back of the fool.6 The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the just: but iniquity covereth the mouth of the wicked.
The memory of the just will be blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.7 The memory of the just is with praises: and the name of the wicked shall rot.
A wise man heeds commands, but a prating fool will be overthrown.8 The wise of heart receiveth precepts: a fool is beaten with lips.
He who walks honestly walks securely, but he whose ways are crooked will fare badly.9 He that walketh sincerely, walketh confidently: but he that perverteth his ways, shall be manifest.
He who winks at a fault causes trouble, but he who frankly reproves promotes peace.10 He that winketh with the eye shall cause sorrow: and the foolish in lips shall be beaten.
A fountain of life is the mouth of the just, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.11 The mouth of the just is a vein of life: and the mouth of the wicked covereth iniquity.
Hatred stirs up disputes, but love covers all offenses.12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: and charity covereth all sins.
On the lips of the intelligent is found wisdom, (but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence).13 In the lips of the wise is wisdom found: and a rod on the back of him that wanteth sense.
Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool is imminent ruin.14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the fool is next to confusion.
The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the ruination of the lowly is their poverty.15 The substance of a rich man is the city of his strength: the fear of the poor is their poverty.
The just man's recompense leads to life, the gains of the wicked, to sin.16 The work of the just is unto life: but the fruit of the wicked, unto sin.
A path to life is his who heeds admonition, but he who disregards reproof goes astray.17 The way of life, to him that observeth correction: but he that forsaketh reproofs goeth astray.
It is the lips of the liar that conceal hostility; but he who spreads accusations is a fool.18 Lying lips hide hatred: he that uttereth reproach is foolish.
Where words are many, sin is not wanting; but he who restrains his lips does well.19 In the multitude of words there shall not want sin: but he that refraineth his lips is most wise.
Like choice silver is the just man's tongue; the heart of the wicked is of little worth.20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: but the heart of the wicked is nothing worth.
The just man's lips nourish many, but fools die for want of sense.21 The lips of the just teach many: but they that are ignorant, shall die in the want of understanding.
It is the LORD'S blessing that brings wealth, and no effort can substitute for it.22 The blessing of the Lord maketh men rich: neither shall affliction be joined to them.
Crime is the entertainment of the fool; so is wisdom for the man of sense.23 A fool worketh mischief as it were for sport: but wisdom is prudence to a man.
What the wicked man fears will befall him, but the desire of the just will be granted.24 That which the wicked feareth, shall come upon him: to the just their desire shall be given.
When the tempest passes, the wicked man is no more; but the just man is established forever.25 As a tempest that passeth, so the wicked shall be no more: but the just is as an everlasting foundation.
As vinegar to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, is the sluggard to those who use him as a messenger.26 As vinegar to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that sent him.
The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked are brief.27 The fear of the Lord shall prolong days: and the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
The hope of the just brings them joy, but the expectation of the wicked comes to nought.28 The expectation of the just is joy; but the hope of the wicked shall perish.
The LORD is a stronghold to him who walks honestly, but to evildoers, their downfall.29 The strength of the upright is the way of the Lord: and fear to them that work evil.
The just man will never be disturbed, but the wicked will not abide in the land.30 The just shall never be moved: but the wicked shall not dwell on the earth.
The mouth of the just yields wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off.31 The mouth of the just shall bring forth wisdom: the tongue of the perverse shall perish.
The lips of the just know how to please, but the mouth of the wicked, how to pervert.32 The lips of the just consider what is acceptable: and the mouth of the wicked uttereth perverse things.
