A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.1 Of understanding, for Ethan the Ezrahite.
The promises of the LORD I will sing forever, proclaim your loyalty through all ages.2 The mercies of the Lord I will sing for ever. I will shew forth thy truth with my mouth to generation and generation.
For you said, "My love is established forever; my loyalty will stand as long as the heavens.3 For thou hast said: Mercy shall be built up for ever in the heavens: thy truth shall be prepared in them.
I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant:4 I have made a covenant with my elect: I have sworn to David my servant:
I will make your dynasty stand forever and establish your throne through all ages." Selah5 Thy seed will I settle for ever. And I will build up thy throne unto generation and generation.
The heavens praise your marvels, LORD, your loyalty in the assembly of the holy ones.6 The heavens shall confess thy wonders, O Lord: and thy truth in the church of the saints.
Who in the skies ranks with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the gods?7 For who in the clouds can be compared to the Lord: or who among the sons of God shall be like to God?
A God dreaded in the council of the holy ones, greater and more awesome than all who sit there!8 God, who is glorified in the assembly of the saints: great and terrible above all them that are about him.
LORD, God of hosts, who is like you? Mighty LORD, your loyalty is always present.9 O Lord God of hosts, who is like to thee? thou art mighty, O Lord, and thy truth is round about thee.
You rule the raging sea; you still its swelling waves.10 Thou rulest the power of the sea: and appeasest the motion of the waves thereof.
You crushed Rahab with a mortal blow; your strong arm scattered your foes.11 Thou hast humbled the proud one, as one that is slain: with the arm of thy strength thou hast scattered thy enemies.
Yours are the heavens, yours the earth; you founded the world and everything in it.12 Thine are the heavens, and thine is the earth: the world and the fulness thereof thou hast founded:
Zaphon and Amanus you created; Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name.13 the north and the sea thou hast created. Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name:
Mighty your arm, strong your hand, your right hand is ever exalted.14 thy arm is with might. Let thy hand be strengthened, and thy right hand exalted:
Justice and judgment are the foundation of your throne; love and loyalty march before you.15 justice and judgment are the preparation of thy throne. Mercy and truth shall go before thy face:
Happy the people who know you, LORD, who walk in the radiance of your face.16 blessed is the people that knoweth jubilation. They shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance:
In your name they sing joyfully all the day; at your victory they raise the festal shout.17 and in thy name they shall rejoice all the day, and in thy justice they shall be exalted.
You are their majestic strength; by your favor our horn is exalted.18 For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy good pleasure shall our horn be exalted.
Truly the LORD is our shield, the Holy One of Israel, our king!19 For our protection is of the Lord, and of our king the holy one of Israel.
Once you spoke in vision; to your faithful ones you said: "I have set a leader over the warriors; I have raised up a hero from the army.20 Then thou spokest in a vision to thy saints, and saidst: I have laid help upon one that is mighty, and have exalted one chosen out of my people.
I have chosen David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him.21 I have found David my servant: with my holy oil I have anointed him.
My hand will be with him; my arm will make him strong.22 For my hand shall help him: and my arm shall strengthen him.
No enemy shall outwit him, nor shall the wicked defeat him.23 The enemy shall have no advantage over him: nor the son of iniquity have power to hurt him.
I will crush his foes before him, strike down those who hate him.24 And I will cut down his enemies before his face; and them that hate him I will put to flight.
My loyalty and love will be with him; through my name his horn will be exalted.25 And my truth and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.
I will set his hand upon the sea, his right hand upon the rivers.26 And I will set his hand in the sea; and his right hand in the rivers.
He shall cry to me,'You are my father, my God, the Rock that brings me victory!'27 He shall cry out to me: Thou art my father: my God, and the support of my salvation.
I myself make him firstborn, Most High over the kings of the earth.28 And I will make him my firstborn, high above the kings of the earth.
Forever I will maintain my love for him; my covenant with him stands firm.29 I will keep my mercy for him for ever: and my covenant faithful to him.
I will establish his dynasty forever, his throne as the days of the heavens.30 And I will make his seed to endure for evermore: and his throne as the days of heaven.
If his descendants forsake my law, do not follow my decrees,31 And if his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments:
If they fail to observe my statutes, do not keep my commandments,32 If they profane my justices: and keep not my commandments:
I will punish their crime with a rod and their guilt with lashes.33 I will visit their iniquities with a rod: and their sins with stripes.
But I will not take my love from him, nor will I betray my bond of loyalty.34 But my mercy I will not take away from him: nor will I suffer my truth to fail.
I will not violate my covenant; the promise of my lips I will not alter.35 Neither will I profane my covenant: and the words that proceed from my mouth I will not make void.
By my holiness I swore once for all: I will never be false to David.36 Once have I sworn by my holiness: I will not lie unto David:
His dynasty will continue forever, his throne, like the sun before me.37 his seed shall endure for ever.
Like the moon it will stand eternal, forever firm like the sky!" Selah38 And his throne as the sun before me: and as the moon perfect for ever, and a faithful witness in heaven.
But now you have rejected and spurned, been enraged at your anointed.39 But thou hast rejected and despised: thou hast been angry with thy anointed.
You renounced the covenant with your servant, defiled his crown in the dust.40 Thou hast overthrown the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his sanctuary on the earth.
You broke down all his defenses, left his strongholds in ruins.41 Thou hast broken down all his hedges: thou hast made his strength fear.
All who pass through seize plunder; his neighbors deride him.42 All that pass by the way have robbed him: he is become a reproach to his neighbours.
You have exalted the right hand of his foes, have gladdened all his enemies.43 Thou hast set up the right hand of them that oppress him: thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.
You turned back his sharp sword, did not support him in battle.44 Thou hast turned away the help of his sword; and hast not assisted him in battle.
You brought to an end his splendor, hurled his throne to the ground.45 Thou hast made his purification to cease: and thou hast cast his throne down to the ground.
You cut short the days of his youth, covered him with shame. Selah46 Thou hast shortened the days of his time: thou hast covered him with confusion.
How long, LORD? Will you stay hidden forever? Must your wrath smolder like fire?47 How long, O Lord, turnest thou away unto the end? shall thy anger burn like fire?
Remember how brief is my life, how frail the race you created!48 Remember what my substance is for hast thou made all the children of men in vain?
What mortal can live and not see death? Who can escape the power of Sheol? Selah49 Who is the man that shall live, and not see death: that shall deliver his soul from the hand of hell?
Where are your promises of old, Lord, the loyalty sworn to David?50 Lord, where are thy ancient mercies, according to what thou didst swear to David in thy truth?
Remember, Lord, the insults to your servants, how I bear all the slanders of the nations.51 Be mindful, O Lord, of the reproach of thy servants (which I have held in my bosom) of many nations:
Your enemies, LORD, insult your anointed; they insult my every endeavor.52 Wherewith thy enemies have reproached, O Lord; wherewith they have reproached the change of thy anointed.
Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and amen!53 Blessed be the Lord for evermore. So be it. So be it.
