1 In the year one hundred and forty-nine, Judas and his men learned that Antiochus Eupator was invading Judea with a large force,	1 El año 149, los hombres de Judas se enteraron de que Antíoco Eupátor marchaba sobre Judea con numerosas tropas,
2 and that with him was Lysias, his guardian, who was in charge of the government. They led a Greek army of one hundred and ten thousand foot soldiers, fifty-three hundred horsemen, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariots armed with scythes.	2 y que con él venía Lisias, su tutor y encargado de los negocios, cada uno con un ejército griego de 110.000 infantes, 5.300 jinetes, veintidós elefantes y trescientos carros armados de hoces.
3 Menelaus also joined them, and with great duplicity kept urging Antiochus on, not for the welfare of his country, but in the hope of being established in office.	3 También Menelao se unió a ellos e incitaba muy taimadamente a Antíoco, no por salvar a su patria, sino con la idea de establecerse en el poder.
4 But the King of kings aroused the anger of Antiochus against the scoundrel. When the king was shown by Lysias that Menelaus was to blame for all the trouble, he ordered him to be taken to Beroea and executed there in the customary local method.	4 Pero el Rey de reyes excitó la cólera de Antíoco contra aquel malvado; Lisias demostró al rey que aquel hombre era el causante de todos los males, y Antíoco ordenó conducirle a Berea y darle allí muerte, según las costumbres del lugar.
5 There is at that place a tower seventy-five feet high, full of ashes, with a circular rim sloping down steeply on all sides toward the ashes.	5 Hay en aquel lugar una torre de cincuenta codos, llena de ceniza, provista de un dispositivo giratorio, en pendiente por todos los lados hacia la ceniza.
6 A man guilty of sacrilege or notorious for certain other crimes is brought up there and then hurled down to destruction.	6 Al reo de robo sacríleg o al que ha perpetrado algún otro crimen horrendo, lo suben allí y lo precipitan para su perdición.
7 In such a manner was Menelaus, the transgressor of the law, fated to die; he was deprived even of decent burial.	7 Y sucedió que con tal suplicio murió aquel inicuo Menelao que ni siquiera tuvo la suerte de encontrar la tierra que le recibiera.
8 It was altogether just that he who had committed so many sins against the altar with its pure fire and ashes should meet his death in ashes.	8 Y muy justamente fue así, pues, después de haber cometido muchos pecados contra el altar, cuyo fuego y ceniza eran sagrados, en la ceniza encontró la muerte.
9 The king was advancing, his mind full of savage plans for inflicting on the Jews worse things than those they suffered in his father's time.	9 Marchaba, pues, el rey embargado de bárbaros sentimientos, dispuesto a mostrar a los judíos peores cosas que las sucedidas en tiempo de su padre.
10 When Judas learned of this, he urged the people to call upon the LORD night and day, to help them now, if ever,	10 Al saberlo Judas mandó a la tropa que invocara al Señor día y noche, para que también en esta ocasión, como en otras, viniera en ayuda de los que estaban a punto de ser privados de la Ley, de la patria y del Templo santo,
11 when they were about to be deprived of their law, their country, and their holy temple; and not to allow this nation, which had just begun to revive, to be subjected again to blasphemous Gentiles.	11 y no permitiera que aquel pueblo, que todavía hacía poco había recobrado el ánimo, cayera en manos de gentiles de mala fama.
12 When they had all joined in doing this, and had implored the merciful LORD continuously with weeping and fasting and prostrations for three days, Judas encouraged them and told them to stand ready.	12 Una vez que todos juntos cumplieron la orden y suplicaron al Señor misericordioso con lamentaciones y ayunos y postraciones durante tres días seguidos, Judas les animó y les mandó que estuvieran preparados.
13 After a private meeting with the elders, he decided that, before the king's army could invade Judea and take possession of the city, the Jews should march out and settle the matter with God's help.	13 Después de reunirse en privado con los Ancianos, decidió que, antes que el ejército del rey entrara en Judea y se hiciera dueño de la ciudad, salieran los suyos para resolver la situación con el auxilio de Dios.
14 Leaving the outcome to the Creator of the world, and exhorting his followers to fight nobly to death for the laws, the temple, the city, the country, and the government, he pitched his camp near Modein.	14 Judas, dejando la decisión al Creador del mundo, animó a sus hombres a combatir heroicamente hasta la muerte por la causa de las leyes, el Templo, la ciudad, la patria y las instituciones; y acampó en las cercanías de Modín.
15 Giving his men the battle cry "God's Victory," he made a night attack on the king's pavilion with a picked force of the bravest young men and killed about two thousand in the camp. They also slew the lead elephant and its rider.	15 Dio a los suyos como consigna «Victoria de Dios» y atacó de noche con lo más escogido de los jóvenes la tienda del rey. Mató en el campamento a unos 2.000 hombres y los suyos hirieron al mayor de los elefantes junto con su conductor;
16 Finally they withdrew in triumph, having filled the camp with terror and confusion.	16 llenaron finalmente el campamento de terror y confusión, y se retiraron victoriosos
17 Day was just breaking when this was accomplished with the help and protection of the LORD.	17 cuando el día despuntaba. Todo ello sucedió, gracias a la protección que el Señor había brindado a Judas.
18 The king, having had a taste of the Jews' daring, tried to take their positions by a stratagem.	18 El rey, que había probado ya la osadía de los judíos, intentó alcanzar las posiciones con estratagemas.
19 So he marched against Beth-zur, a strong fortress of the Jews; but he was driven back, checked, and defeated.	19 Se aproximó a Bet Sur, plaza fuerte de los judíos; pero fue rechazado, derrotado y vencido.
20 Judas then sent supplies to the men inside,	20 Judas hizo llegar a los de dentro lo que necesitaban.
21 but Rhodocus, of the Jewish army, betrayed military secrets to the enemy. He was found out, arrested, and imprisoned.	21 Pero Rodoco, uno del ejército judío, revelaba los secretos a los enemigos; fue buscado, capturado y ejecutado.
22 The king made a second attempt by negotiating with the men of Beth-zur. After giving them his pledge and receiving theirs, he withdrew	22 El rey parlamentó por segunda vez con los de Bet Sur, dio y tomó la mano y luego se retiró. Atacó a las tropas de Judas, y fue vencido.
23 and attacked Judas and his men. But he was defeated. Next he heard that Philip, who was left in charge of the government in Antioch had rebelled. Dismayed, he parleyed with the Jews, submitted to their terms, and swore to observe their rights. Having come to this agreement, he offered a sacrifice, and honored the temple with a generous donation.	23 Supo entonces que Filipo, a quien había dejado en Antioquía al frente de los negocios, se había sublevado. Consternado, llamó a los judíos, se avino a sus deseos, y prestó juramento sobre todas las condiciones justas. Se reconcilió y ofreció un sacrificio, honró al santuario y se mostró generoso con el Lugar Santo.
24 He approved of Maccabeus and left him as military and civil governor of the territory from Ptolemais to the region of the Gerrenes.	24 Prestó buena acogida a Macabeo y dejó a Hegemónides como estratega desde Tolemaida hasta la región de los guerraínos.
25 When he came to Ptolemais, the people of that city were angered by the peace treaty; in fact they were so indignant that they wanted to annul its provisions.	25 Salió hacia Tolemaida; pero los habitantes de la ciudad estaban muy disgustados por este tratado: estaban en verdad indignados por los acuerdos, que ellos querían abolir.
26 But Lysias took the platform, defended the treaty as well as he could and won them over by persuasion. After calming them and gaining their good will, he returned to Antioch. That is how the king's attack and withdrawal went.	26 Lisias entonces subió a la tribuna e hizo la mejor defensa que pudo; les convenció y calmó, y les dispuso a la benevolencia. Luego partió hacia Antioquía. Así sucedió con la expedición y la retirada del rey.
