NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
Some time after these events, God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, "Abraham!" "Ready!" he replied.1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
Then God said: "Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you."2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
Early the next morning Abraham saddled his donkey, took with him his son Isaac, and two of his servants as well, and with the wood that he had cut for the holocaust, set out for the place of which God had told him.3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
On the third day Abraham got sight of the place from afar.4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
Then he said to his servants: "Both of you stay here with the donkey, while the boy and I go on over yonder. We will worship and then come back to you."5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you,
Thereupon Abraham took the wood for the holocaust and laid it on his son Isaac's shoulders, while he himself carried the fire and the knife.6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
As the two walked on together, Isaac spoke to his father Abraham. "Father!" he said. "Yes, son," he replied. Isaac continued, "Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the sheep for the holocaust?"7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
"Son," Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the sheep for the holocaust." Then the two continued going forward.8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Next he tied up his son Isaac, and put him on top of the wood on the altar.9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
But the LORD'S messenger called to him from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham!" "Yes, Lord," he answered.11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
"Do not lay your hand on the boy," said the messenger. "Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son."12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
Abraham named the site Yahweh-yireh; hence people now say, "On the mountain the LORD will see."14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
Again the LORD'S messenger called to Abraham from heaven15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
and said: "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son,16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies,17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing--all this because you obeyed my command.''18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
Abraham then returned to his servants, and they set out together for Beer-sheba, where Abraham made his home.19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba.
Some time afterward, the news came to Abraham: "Milcah too has borne sons, to your brother Nahor:20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;
Uz, his first-born, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),21 Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel."22 And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.
Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Abraham's brother Nahor.23 And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore children: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
