1 בעת ההיא חלה אביה בן ירבעם	1 At that time Abijah, Jeroboam's son, fel sick,
2 ויאמר ירבעם לאשתו קומי נא והשתנית ולא ידעו כי אתי אשת ירבעם והלכת שלה הנה שם אחיה הנביא הוא דבר עלי למלך על העם הזה	2 and Jeroboam said to his wife, 'Come, please disguise yourself so that no one will recognise you asJeroboam's wife, and go to Shiloh; the prophet Ahijah is there, the man who said I was to be king of this people.
3 ולקחת בידך עשרה לחם ונקדים ובקבק דבש ובאת אליו הוא יגיד לך מה יהיה לנער	3 Go to him, and take ten loaves and some savoury food and a jar of honey; he wil tell you what wilhappen to the child.'
4 ותעש כן אשת ירבעם ותקם ותלך שלה ותבא בית אחיה ואחיהו לא יכל לראות כי קמו עיניו משיבו	4 Jeroboam's wife did this: she set out, went to Shiloh and came to Ahijah's house.
5 ויהוה אמר אל אחיהו הנה אשת ירבעם באה לדרש דבר מעמך אל בנה כי חלה הוא כזה וכזה תדבר אליה ויהי כבאה והיא מתנכרה	5 Now Ahijah could not see, his eyes were fixed with age, but Yahweh had told him, 'Jeroboam's wife isnow on her way to ask you for a prophecy about her son, as he is sick. You wil tel her such and such. Whenshe comes, she wil pretend to be some other woman.'
6 ויהי כשמע אחיהו את קול רגליה באה בפתח ויאמר באי אשת ירבעם למה זה את מתנכרה ואנכי שלוח אליך קשה	6 So when Ahijah heard her footsteps at the door, he cal ed, 'Come in, wife of Jeroboam; why pretend tobe someone else? I have bad news for you.
7 לכי אמרי לירבעם כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל יען אשר הרימתיך מתוך העם ואתנך נגיד על עמי ישראל	7 Go and tell Jeroboam, "Yahweh, God of Israel, says this: I raised you from the people and made youleader of my people Israel;
8 ואקרע את הממלכה מבית דוד ואתנה לך ולא היית כעבדי דוד אשר שמר מצותי ואשר הלך אחרי בכל לבבו לעשות רק הישר בעיני	8 I tore the kingdom from the House of David and gave it to you. But you have not been like my servantDavid who kept my commandments and followed me with al his heart, doing only what I regard as right;
9 ותרע לעשות מכל אשר היו לפניך ותלך ותעשה לך אלהים אחרים ומסכות להכעיסני ואתי השלכת אחרי גוך	9 you have done more evil than all your predecessors, you have gone and made yourself other gods,idols of cast metal, provoking my anger, and you have turned your back on me.
10 לכן הנני מביא רעה אל בית ירבעם והכרתי לירבעם משתין בקיר עצור ועזוב בישראל ובערתי אחרי בית ירבעם כאשר יבער הגלל עד תמו	10 For this I shal bring disaster on the House of Jeroboam, I shal wipe out every manjack of the familyof Jeroboam, fettered or free in Israel, I shal sweep away the House of Jeroboam as a man sweeps dung awaytill none is left.
11 המת לירבעם בעיר יאכלו הכלבים והמת בשדה יאכלו עוף השמים כי יהוה דבר	11 Those of Jeroboam's family who die in the city, the dogs wil eat; and those who die in the opencountry, the birds of the air wil eat, for Yahweh has spoken."
12 ואת קומי לכי לביתך בבאה רגליך העירה ומת הילד	12 Now get up and go home; at the moment your feet enter the town, the child will die.
13 וספדו לו כל ישראל וקברו אתו כי זה לבדו יבא לירבעם אל קבר יען נמצא בו דבר טוב אל יהוה אלהי ישראל בבית ירבעם	13 Al Israel wil mourn for him, and bury him; and he alone of Jeroboam's family will have a properburial, for in him alone of the House of Jeroboam can Yahweh, God of Israel, find anything good.
14 והקים יהוה לו מלך על ישראל אשר יכרית את בית ירבעם זה היום ומה גם עתה	14 Yahweh wil set a king over Israel, who will put an end to the House of Jeroboam.
15 והכה יהוה את ישראל כאשר ינוד הקנה במים ונתש את ישראל מעל האדמה הטובה הזאת אשר נתן לאבותיהם וזרם מעבר לנהר יען אשר עשו את אשריהם מכעיסים את יהוה	15 Yahweh wil make Israel shake, til it quivers like a reed in the water; he will uproot Israel from thisprosperous land which he gave to their ancestors and scatter them beyond the River for provoking Yahweh toanger by making their sacred poles.
16 ויתן את ישראל בגלל חטאות ירבעם אשר חטא ואשר החטיא את ישראל	16 He wil abandon Israel for the sins which Jeroboam has committed and made Israel commit.'
17 ותקם אשת ירבעם ותלך ותבא תרצתה היא באה בסף הבית והנער מת	17 Jeroboam's wife rose and left. She arrived at Tirzah, and when she crossed the threshold of thepalace, the child was already dead.
18 ויקברו אתו ויספדו לו כל ישראל כדבר יהוה אשר דבר ביד עבדו אחיהו הנביא	18 They buried him, and al Israel mourned for him, just as Yahweh had foretold through his servantAhijah the prophet.
19 ויתר דברי ירבעם אשר נלחם ואשר מלך הנם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי ישראל	19 The rest of the history of Jeroboam, what wars he waged, how he governed, this is recorded in theBook of the Annals of the Kings of Israel.
20 והימים אשר מלך ירבעם עשרים ושתים שנה וישכב עם אבתיו וימלך נדב בנו תחתיו	20 Jeroboam's reign lasted twenty-two years. Then he fel asleep with his ancestors; his son Nadabsucceeded him.
21 ורחבעם בן שלמה מלך ביהודה בן ארבעים ואחת שנה רחבעם במלכו ושבע עשרה שנה מלך בירושלם העיר אשר בחר יהוה לשום את שמו שם מכל שבטי ישראל ושם אמו נעמה העמנית	21 In Judah, Rehoboam son of Solomon became king; he was forty-one years old when he came to thethrone and he reigned for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen out of al the tribesof Israel, to give his name a home there. His mother's name was Naamah, the Ammonite.
22 ויעש יהודה הרע בעיני יהוה ויקנאו אתו מכל אשר עשו אבתם בחטאתם אשר חטאו	22 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, arousing his resentment more than his ancestors by al the sinswhich they had committed;
23 ויבנו גם המה להם במות ומצבות ואשרים על כל גבעה גבהה ותחת כל עץ רענן	23 they had built themselves high places, and had set up pil ars and sacred poles on every high hil andunder every spreading tree.
24 וגם קדש היה בארץ עשו ככל התועבת הגוים אשר הוריש יהוה מפני בני ישראל	24 There were even male sacred prostitutes in the country. He copied all the shameful practices of thenations whom Yahweh had dispossessed for the Israelites.
25 ויהי בשנה החמישית למלך רחבעם עלה שושק מלך מצרים על ירושלם	25 And so it happened that in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt advanced onJerusalem
26 ויקח את אצרות בית יהוה ואת אוצרות בית המלך ואת הכל לקח ויקח את כל מגני הזהב אשר עשה שלמה	26 and carried off all the treasures of the Temple of Yahweh and the treasures of the royal palace; hetook everything away, including al the golden shields which Solomon had made.
27 ויעש המלך רחבעם תחתם מגני נחשת והפקיד על יד שרי הרצים השמרים פתח בית המלך	27 To replace those King Rehoboam made bronze shields, entrusting them to the commanders of theguard who guarded the king's palace gate.
28 ויהי מדי בא המלך בית יהוה ישאום הרצים והשיבום אל תא הרצים	28 Whenever the king went to the Temple of Yahweh, the guards would carry them, returning them to theguardroom afterwards.
29 ויתר דברי רחבעם וכל אשר עשה הלא המה כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי יהודה	29 The rest of the history of Rehoboam, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annalsof the Kings of Judah?
30 ומלחמה היתה בין רחבעם ובין ירבעם כל הימים	30 Warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam went on throughout the period.
31 וישכב רחבעם עם אבתיו ויקבר עם אבתיו בעיר דוד ושם אמו נעמה העמנית וימלך אבים בנו תחתיו	31 When Rehoboam fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Abijamsucceeded him.
