1 Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,	1 - O se tu squarciassi i cieli e scendessi! Al tuo cospetto si squaglierebbero i monti;
2 As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!	2 come in una fiammata di fuoco si consumerebbero; ribollirebbero le acque; affinchè fosse noto ai tuoi nemici il tuo nome e al tuo cospetto tremassero le genti!
3 When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.	3 Quando tu avessi operato portenti a cui non potessimo reggere; fosti disceso e i monti si fossero liquefatti;
4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.	4 non per questo al mondo si potrà udire, nè intendere colle orecchie: occhio non vide eccetto te, o Dio, quello che tu hai preparato per coloro che ti aspettano.
5 Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.	5 Tu sei andato incontro a chi ti faceva buon viso, e a chi praticava la tua giustizia; nelle tue vie si ricorderanno di te. Ecco che ti sei sdegnato: noi abbiamo peccato, siamo sempre negli stessi peccati; ma saremo salvati.
6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.	6 Tutti siamo diventati come persone contaminate, tutta la nostra giustizia è come panno da mestrui; siamo tutti caduti come la foglia e le nostre iniquità come il vento ci travolsero.
7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.	7 Non c'è nessuno che invochi il tuo nome, che si risvegli e si stringa a te; hai nascosta a noi la tua faccia e ci hai schiacciati sotto la nostra iniquità.
8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.	8 Ed ora, o Signore, tu sei il nostro padre e noi un impasto di creta; sei tu che ci hai impastati, e noi siamo tutti opera delle tue mani.
9 Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.	9 Non adirarti, o Signore, di più: non voler più oltre rammentare la nostra iniquità; ecco, guardaci, siamo tutti tuo popolo.
10 Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.	10 La città del tuo santuario è diventata deserta, deserta Sion, Gerusalemme abbandonata.
11 Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.	11 La casa che era il nostro santuario e la nostra gloria, dove i nostri padri ti avevano lodato, è stata arsa dal fuoco, e tutte le nostre cose più care sono andate in rovina.
12 Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O LORD? wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore?	12 In faccia a questo spettacolo potrai, o Signore, contenerti? tacerai e seguiterai ad affligerci oltre misura?
