KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.1 The Proverbs of Solomon: A wise son makes his father glad, but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.
Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.2 Ill-gotten treasures profit nothing, but virtue saves from death.
The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.3 The LORD permits not the just to hunger, but the craving of the wicked he thwarts.
He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.4 The slack hand impoverishes, but the hand of the diligent enriches.
He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.5 A son who fills the granaries in summer is a credit; a son who slumbers during harvest, a disgrace.
Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.6 Blessings are for the head of the just, but a rod for the back of the fool.
The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.7 The memory of the just will be blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.
The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.8 A wise man heeds commands, but a prating fool will be overthrown.
He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.9 He who walks honestly walks securely, but he whose ways are crooked will fare badly.
He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.10 He who winks at a fault causes trouble, but he who frankly reproves promotes peace.
The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.11 A fountain of life is the mouth of the just, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.12 Hatred stirs up disputes, but love covers all offenses.
In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.13 On the lips of the intelligent is found wisdom, (but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence).
Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.14 Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool is imminent ruin.
The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.15 The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the ruination of the lowly is their poverty.
The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.16 The just man's recompense leads to life, the gains of the wicked, to sin.
He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.17 A path to life is his who heeds admonition, but he who disregards reproof goes astray.
He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.18 It is the lips of the liar that conceal hostility; but he who spreads accusations is a fool.
In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.19 Where words are many, sin is not wanting; but he who restrains his lips does well.
The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.20 Like choice silver is the just man's tongue; the heart of the wicked is of little worth.
The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.21 The just man's lips nourish many, but fools die for want of sense.
The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.22 It is the LORD'S blessing that brings wealth, and no effort can substitute for it.
It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.23 Crime is the entertainment of the fool; so is wisdom for the man of sense.
The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.24 What the wicked man fears will befall him, but the desire of the just will be granted.
As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.25 When the tempest passes, the wicked man is no more; but the just man is established forever.
As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.26 As vinegar to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, is the sluggard to those who use him as a messenger.
The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.27 The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked are brief.
The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.28 The hope of the just brings them joy, but the expectation of the wicked comes to nought.
The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.29 The LORD is a stronghold to him who walks honestly, but to evildoers, their downfall.
The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.30 The just man will never be disturbed, but the wicked will not abide in the land.
The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.31 The mouth of the just yields wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.32 The lips of the just know how to please, but the mouth of the wicked, how to pervert.
