1 Then Judas Maccabeus, and they that were with him, went privily into the towns, and called their kinsfolks together, and took unto them all such as continued in the Jews' religion, and assembled about six thousand men.	1 Cependant Judas Maccabée et ses compagnons s’introduisaient secrètement dans les villages. Ils rassemblaient leurs parents et entraînaient à leur suite ceux qui étaient restés fidèles au Judaïsme; c’est ainsi qu’ils rassemblèrent environ 6 000 hommes.
2 And they called upon the Lord, that he would look upon the people that was trodden down of all; and also pity the temple profaned of ungodly men;	2 Ils suppliaient le Seigneur de regarder son peuple que tous piétinaient et d’avoir pitié de son Temple profané par les impies,
3 And that he would have compassion upon the city, sore defaced, and ready to be made even with the ground; and hear the blood that cried unto him,	3 d’avoir pitié de la ville dévastée et réduite à l’état de ruines, d’écouter la voix du sang qui criait vers lui,
4 And remember the wicked slaughter of harmless infants, and the blasphemies committed against his name; and that he would shew his hatred against the wicked.	4 de se souvenir du meurtre criminel des petits enfants innocents, et des insultes faites à son Nom: enfin, de montrer sa haine des méchants.
5 Now when Maccabeis had his company about him, he could not be withstood by the heathen: for the wrath of the Lord was turned into mercy.	5 Dès que Maccabée eut une troupe organisée, les païens furent incapables de lui résister, car la colère du Seigneur s’était changée en miséricorde.
6 Therefore he came at unawares, and burnt up towns and cities, and got into his hands the most commodious places, and overcame and put to flight no small number of his enemies.	6 Tombant par surprise sur les villes et les villages, il les brûlait; il occupait les positions les plus favorables et, de là, infligeait à l’ennemi des pertes sévères.
7 But specially took he advantage of the night for such privy attempts, insomuch that the fruit of his holiness was spread every where.	7 La nuit était son meilleur auxiliaire pour ce genre d’expéditions; sa réputation de vaillance se répandit partout.
8 So when Philip saw that this man increased by little and little, and that things prospered with him still more and more, he wrote unto Ptolemeus, the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, to yield more aid to the king's affairs.	8 Philippe vit que cet homme ne cessait de progresser et que ses victoires étaient de plus en plus fréquentes; il écrivit donc à Ptolémée, qui était le chef militaire de la Cœlé-Syrie et de la Phénicie, pour qu’il rétablisse les affaires du roi.
9 Then forthwith choosing Nicanor the son of Patroclus, one of his special friends, he sent him with no fewer than twenty thousand of all nations under him, to root out the whole generation of the Jews; and with him he joined also Gorgias a captain, who in matters of war had great experience.	9 Ptolémée choisit aussitôt Nicanor fils de Patrocle, l’un des principaux favoris du roi, et l’envoya avec une armée d’au moins 20 000 hommes de diverses nations pour exterminer la race entière des Juifs; avec lui, il envoya Gorgias, un général qui avait une bonne expérience des choses de la guerre.
10 So Nicanor undertook to make so much money of the captive Jews, as should defray the tribute of two thousand talents, which the king was to pay to the Romans.	10 Comme le roi devait un tribut de 2 000 talents aux Romains, Nicanor pensa l’assurer par la vente des captifs que l’on ferait en Judée.
11 Wherefore immediately he sent to the cities upon the sea coast, proclaiming a sale of the captive Jews, and promising that they should have fourscore and ten bodies for one talent, not expecting the vengeance that was to follow upon him from the Almighty God.	11 Il s’empressa donc d’envoyer une invitation aux villes maritimes pour qu’elles viennent acheter des esclaves juifs: il leur en offrait 90 pour un talent. Mais il ne s’attendait pas à la vengeance du Tout-Puissant prête à tomber sur lui.
12 Now when word was brought unto Judas of Nicanor's coming, and he had imparted unto those that were with him that the army was at hand,	12 Judas apprit la marche de Nicanor et il informa ses compagnons de l’arrivée de cette armée.
13 They that were fearful, and distrusted the justice of God, fled, and conveyed themselves away.	13 Ceux qui manquaient de courage et qui ne croyaient pas à la justice de Dieu s’enfuirent vers d’autres lieux.
14 Others sold all that they had left, and withal besought the Lord to deliver them, sold by the wicked Nicanor before they met together:	14 Les autres vendirent tout ce qui leur restait, suppliant le Seigneur de les délivrer de l’impie Nicanor qui les avait vendus avant même que la bataille n’ait commencé.
15 And if not for their own sakes, yet for the covenants he had made with their fathers, and for his holy and glorious name's sake, by which they were called.	15 Ils lui demandaient d’intervenir, non pas à cause d’eux, mais par égard pour les alliances conclues avec leurs pères, et parce qu’eux-mêmes portaient son Nom auguste et plein de majesté.
16 So Maccabeus called his men together unto the number of six thousand, and exhorted them not to be stricken with terror of the enemy, nor to fear the great multitude of the heathen, who came wrongly against them; but to fight manfully,	16 Maccabée réunit donc ceux qui étaient restés avec lui, près de 6 000 hommes, et il les encouragea à ne pas se laisser impressionner par l’ennemi. Ils ne devaient pas craindre ces païens malgré leur nombre, car ils venaient les attaquer pour une mauvaise cause. Il les encouragea à combattre de toutes leurs forces,
17 And to set before their eyes the injury that they had unjustly done to the holy place, and the cruel handling of the city, whereof they made a mockery, and also the taking away of the government of their forefathers:	17 pensant à la profanation scandaleuse du Lieu Saint, au traitement infligé par eux à la ville outragée, et à la ruine des institutions de leurs pères.
18 For they, said he, trust in their weapons and boldness; but our confidence is in the Almighty who at a beck can cast down both them that come against us, and also all the world.	18 Maccabée leur disait encore: “Ils ne croient qu’aux armes et à leur propre audace, alors que nous, nous comptons sur Dieu, le Maître de toutes choses, qui peut d’un geste renverser ceux qui viennent nous attaquer, et avec eux l’univers entier.”
19 Moreover, he recounted unto them what helps their forefathers had found, and how they were delivered, when under Sennacherib an hundred fourscore and five thousand perished.	19 Il passa en revue sous leurs yeux les exemples anciens de la protection de Dieu, comme ces 180 000 hommes qui périrent au temps de Sennakérib.
20 And he told them of the battle that they had in Babylon with the Galatians, how they came but eight thousand in all to the business, with four thousand Macedonians, and that the Macedonians being perplexed, the eight thousand destroyed an hundred and twenty thousand because of the help that they had from heaven, and so received a great booty.	20 Il leur rappela la bataille livrée aux Galates en Babylonie; les Juifs n’étaient que 8 000 hommes à prendre part à la bataille, mais lorsque les 4 000 Macédoniens qui étaient avec eux furent mis en échec, ces 8 000 avaient détruit 120 000 ennemis grâce au secours venu du Ciel, et ils avaient ramassé un abondant butin.
21 Thus when he had made them bold with these words, and ready to die for the law and the country, he divided his army into four parts;	21 Après leur avoir redonné confiance par ces souvenirs et les avoir disposés à mourir pour les lois et pour la patrie, il divisa son armée en quatre troupes.
22 And joined with himself his own brethren, leaders of each band, to wit Simon, and Joseph, and Jonathan, giving each one fifteen hundred men.	22 Il plaça ses frères Simon, Joseph et Jonathas à la tête de chacune des troupes, et il leur donna à chacun 1 500 hommes. Éléazar était là lui aussi.
23 Also he appointed Eleazar to read the holy book: and when he had given them this watchword, The help of God; himself leading the first band,	23 Il fit la lecture du Livre Saint, puis ayant donné comme mot d’ordre: “Secours de Dieu!” il prit la tête de la première troupe et attaqua Nicanor.
24 And by the help of the Almighty they slew above nine thousand of their enemies, and wounded and maimed the most part of Nicanor's host, and so put all to flight;	24 Le Tout-Puissant vint à leur aide: ils tuèrent plus de 9 000 ennemis, blessèrent et mutilèrent la plus grande partie des hommes de Nicanor et les mirent tous en fuite.
25 And took their money that came to buy them, and pursued them far: but lacking time they returned:	25 Ils ramassèrent l’argent de ceux qui étaient venus pour les acheter, poursuivirent les ennemis assez loin. Mais ils durent interrompre car le temps leur manquait:
26 For it was the day before the sabbath, and therefore they would no longer pursue them.	26 c’était la veille du sabbat, c’est pourquoi ils s’arrêtèrent de les poursuivre.
27 So when they had gathered their armour together, and spoiled their enemies, they occupied themselves about the sabbath, yielding exceeding praise and thanks to the Lord, who had preserved them unto that day, which was the beginning of mercy distilling upon them.	27 Quand ils eurent ramassé les armes des ennemis et enlevé leurs dépouilles, ils célébrèrent le sabbat; ils bénissaient Dieu mille fois et louaient le Seigneur qui les avait délivrés en ce jour et avait fait pour eux un premier geste de miséricorde.
28 And after the sabbath, when they had given part of the spoils to the maimed, and the widows, and orphans, the residue they divided among themselves and their servants.	28 Après le sabbat ils distribuèrent une part du butin à ceux qui avaient souffert de la persécution, aux veuves et aux orphelins; eux-mêmes et leurs enfants se partagèrent le reste.
29 When this was done, and they had made a common supplication, they besought the merciful Lord to be reconciled with his servants for ever.	29 Ensuite ils se mirent à prier tous ensemble, suppliant le Seigneur miséricordieux de se réconcilier totalement avec ses serviteurs.
30 Moreover of those that were with Timotheus and Bacchides, who fought against them, they slew above twenty thousand, and very easily got high and strong holds, and divided among themselves many spoils more, and made the maimed, orphans, widows, yea, and the aged also, equal in spoils with themselves.	30 Ils affrontèrent ensuite les hommes de Timothée et Bakidès, ils en tuèrent plus de 20 000; ils s’emparèrent de hautes forteresses et partagèrent encore leur butin en faisant deux parts égales: l’une pour eux, l’autre pour les victimes de la persécution, les orphelins, les veuves et les vieillards.
31 And when they had gathered their armour together, they laid them up all carefully in convenient places, and the remnant of the spoils they brought to Jerusalem.	31 Ils recueillirent les armes et les déposèrent toutes soigneusement aux endroits les plus convenables, puis ils transportèrent à Jérusalem le reste du butin.
32 They slew also Philarches, that wicked person, who was with Timotheus, and had annoyed the Jews many ways.	32 Ils mirent à mort le chef des gardes de Timothée, car c’était un homme très mauvais qui avait fait beaucoup de mal aux Juifs.
33 Furthermore at such time as they kept the feast for the victory in their country they burnt Callisthenes, that had set fire upon the holy gates, who had fled into a little house; and so he received a reward meet for his wickedness.	33 Pendant qu’ils fêtaient leur victoire dans leur capitale, ils brûlèrent ceux qui avaient incendié les saintes portes et s’étaient réfugiés avec Kallistène dans une petite maison; ils reçurent ainsi le juste salaire de leur impiété.
34 As for that most ungracious Nicanor, who had brought a thousand merchants to buy the Jews,	34 Ce triple criminel de Nicanor, qui avait amené les 1 000 marchands pour la vente des Juifs,
35 He was through the help of the Lord brought down by them, of whom he made least account; and putting off his glorious apparel, and discharging his company, he came like a fugitive servant through the midland unto Antioch having very great dishonour, for that his host was destroyed.	35 fut humilié avec l’aide du Seigneur par des gens qui, pensait-il, étaient les derniers de tous. Nicanor se dépouilla de ses vêtements princiers et prit la fuite à travers champs comme un esclave fugitif, sans escorte. Il eut la chance inespérée de se retrouver à Antioche après le désastre de son armée.
36 Thus he, that took upon him to make good to the Romans their tribute by means of captives in Jerusalem, told abroad, that the Jews had God to fight for them, and therefore they could not be hurt, because they followed the laws that he gave them.	36 Lui qui avait promis de régler le tribut dû aux Romains avec l’argent des captifs de Jérusalem, il annonçait maintenant que les Juifs avaient Dieu pour défenseur et qu’ils étaient invincibles, car ils obéissaient aux lois qu’il leur avait ordonnées.
