Évangile selon Matthieu 3

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 En ces jours-là arrive Jean le Baptiste, prêchant dans le désert de Judée	1 In due course John the Baptist appeared; he proclaimed this message in the desert of Judaea,
2 et disant: "Repentez-vous, car le Royaume des Cieux est tout proche."	2 'Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.'
3 C'est bien lui dont a parlé Isaïe le prophète: Voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: Préparez lechemin du Seigneur, rendez droits ses sentiers.	3 This was the man spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said: A voice of one that cries in the desert,'Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.'
4 Ce Jean avait son vêtement fait de poils de chameau et un pagne de peau autour de ses reins; sanourriture était de sauterelles et de miel sauvage.	4 This man John wore a garment made of camel-hair with a leather loin-cloth round his waist, and hisfood was locusts and wild honey.
5 Alors s'en allaient vers lui Jérusalem, et toute la Judée, et toute la région du Jourdain,	5 Then Jerusalem and al Judaea and the whole Jordan district made their way to him,
6 et ils se faisaient baptiser par lui dans les eaux du Jourdain, en confessant leurs péchés.	6 and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins.
7 Comme il voyait beaucoup de Pharisiens et de Sadducéens venir au baptême, il leur dit: "Engeancede vipères, qui vous a suggéré d'échapper à la Colère prochaine?	7 But when he saw a number of Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism he said to them, 'Brood ofvipers, who warned you to flee from the coming retribution?
8 Produisez donc un fruit digne du repentir	8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance,
9 et ne vous avisez pas de dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons pour père Abraham. Car je vous le dis,Dieu peut, des pierres que voici, faire surgir des enfants à Abraham.	9 and do not presume to tell yourselves, "We have Abraham as our father," because, I tel you, God canraise children for Abraham from these stones.
10 Déjà la cognée se trouve à la racine des arbres; tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bon fruit vaêtre coupé et jeté au feu.	10 Even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruit wilbe cut down and thrown on the fire.
11 Pour moi, je vous baptise dans de l'eau en vue du repentir; mais celui qui vient derrière moi estplus fort que moi, dont je ne suis pas digne d'enlever les sandales; lui vous baptisera dans l'Esprit Saint et le feu.	11 I baptise you in water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is more powerful than I, and Iam not fit to carry his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
12 Il tient en sa main la pelle à vanner et va nettoyer son aire; il recueillera son blé dans le grenier;quant aux bales, il les consumera au feu qui ne s'éteint pas."	12 His winnowing-fan is in his hand; he will clear his threshing-floor and gather his wheat into his barn;but the chaff he will burn in a fire that wil never go out.'
13 Alors Jésus arrive de la Galilée au Jourdain, vers Jean, pour être baptisé par lui.	13 Then Jesus appeared: he came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John.
14 Celui-ci l'en détournait, en disant: "C'est moi qui ai besoin d'être baptisé par toi, et toi, tu viens àmoi!"	14 John tried to dissuade him, with the words, 'It is I who need baptism from you, and yet you come tome!'
15 Mais Jésus lui répondit: "Laisse faire pour l'instant: car c'est ainsi qu'il nous convient d'accomplirtoute justice." Alors il le laisse faire.	15 But Jesus replied, 'Leave it like this for the time being; it is fitting that we should, in this way, do al thatuprightness demands.' Then John gave in to him.
16 Ayant été baptisé, Jésus aussitôt remonta de l'eau; et voici que les cieux s'ouvrirent: il vit l'Espritde Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui.	16 And when Jesus had been baptised he at once came up from the water, and suddenly the heavensopened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him.
17 Et voici qu'une voix venue des cieux disait: "Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, qui a toute mafaveur.	17 And suddenly there was a voice from heaven, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him.'
