DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained equal faith with us in the justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.1 Symeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of equal value to ours through the righteousness of our God and savior Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace be accomplished in the knowledge of God and of Christ Jesus our Lord:2 may grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
As all things of his divine power which appertain to life and godliness, are given us, through the knowledge of him who hath called us by his own proper glory and virtue.3 His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power.
By whom he hath given us most great and precious promises: that by these you may be made partakers of the divine nature: flying the corruption of that concupiscence which is in the world.4 Through these, he has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divinenature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.
And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue; and in virtue, knowledge;5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge,
And in knowledge, abstinence; and in abstinence, patience; and in patience, godliness;6 knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion,
And in godliness, love of brotherhood; and in love of brotherhood, charity.7 devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love.
For if these things be with you and abound, they will make you to be neither empty nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.8 If these are yours and increase in abundance, they will keep you from being idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For he that hath not these things with him, is blind, and groping, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.9 Anyone who lacks them is blind and shortsighted, forgetful of the cleansing of his past sins.
Wherefore, brethren, labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election. For doing these things, you shall not sin at any time.10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more eager to make your calland election firm, for, in doing so, you will never stumble.
For so an entrance shall be ministered to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.11 For, in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.
For which cause I will begin to put you always in remembrance of these things: though indeed you know them, and are confirmed in the present truth.12 Therefore, I will always remind you of these things, even though you already know them and are established in the truth you have.
But I think it meet as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance.13 I think it right, as long as I am in this "tent," to stir you up by a reminder,
Being assured that the laying away of this my tabernacle is at hand, according as our Lord Jesus Christ also hath signified to me.14 since I know that I will soon have to put it aside, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me.
And I will endeavour, that you frequently have after my decease, whereby you may keep a memory of these things.15 I shall also make every effort to enable you always to remember these things after my departure.
For we have not by following artificial fables, made known to you the power, and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ; but we were eyewitnesses of his greatness.16 We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.
For he received from God the Father, honour and glory: this voice coming down to him from the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased."
And this voice we heard brought from heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount.18 We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain.
And we have the more firm prophetical word: whereunto you do well to attend, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:19 Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation.20 Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation,
For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.21 for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.
