DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of our gathering together unto him:1 We ask you, brothers, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him,
That you be not easily moved from your sense, nor be terrified, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by epistle, as sent from us, as if the day of the Lord were at hand.2 not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a "spirit," or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand.
Let no man deceive you by any means, for unless there come a revolt first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition,3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one doomed to perdition,
Who opposeth, and is lifted up above all that is called God, or that is worshipped, so that he sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself as if he were God.4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of God, claiming that he is a god--
Remember you not, that when I was yet with you, I told you these things?5 do you not recall that while I was still with you I told you these things?
And now you know what withholdeth, that he may be revealed in his time.6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his time.
For the mystery of iniquity already worketh; only that he who now holdeth, do hold, until he be taken out of the way.7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is removed from the scene.
And then that wicked one shall be revealed whom the Lord Jesus shall kill with the spirit of his mouth; and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming, him,8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord (Jesus) will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming,
Whose coming is according to the working of Satan, in all power, and signs, and lying wonders,9 the one whose coming springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in signs and wonders that lie,
And in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish; because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying:10 and in every wicked deceit for those who are perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth so that they may be saved.
That all may be judged who have not believed the truth, but have consented to iniquity.11 Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power so that they may believe the lie,
But we ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, beloved of God, for that God hath chosen you firstfruits unto salvation, in sanctification of the spirit, and faith of the truth:12 that all who have not believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned.
Whereunto also he hath called you by our gospel, unto the purchasing of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.13 But we ought to give thanks to God for you always, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in truth.
Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle.14 To this end he has (also) called you through our gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God and our Father, who hathloved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation, and good hope in grace,15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.
Exhort your hearts, and confirm you in every good work and word.16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace,
encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.
