DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see: and bow down their back always.1 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Of course not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
dummy verses inserted by amos2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?
dummy verses inserted by amos3 "Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have torn down your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life."
dummy verses inserted by amos4 But what is God's response to him? "I have left for myself seven thousand men who have not knelt to Baal."
dummy verses inserted by amos5 So also at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.
dummy verses inserted by amos6 But if by grace, it is no longer because of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
dummy verses inserted by amos7 What then? What Israel was seeking it did not attain, but the elect attained it; the rest were hardened,
dummy verses inserted by amos8 as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of deep sleep, eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear, down to this very day."
dummy verses inserted by amos9 And David says: "Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them;
dummy verses inserted by amos10 let their eyes grow dim so that they may not see, and keep their backs bent forever."
I say then, have they so stumbled, that they should fall? God forbid. But by their offence, salvation is come to the Gentiles, that they may be emulous of them.11 Hence I ask, did they stumble so as to fall? Of course not! But through their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make them jealous.
Now if the offence of them be the riches of the world, and the diminution of them, the riches of the Gentiles; how much more the fulness of them?12 Now if their transgression is enrichment for the world, and if their diminished number is enrichment for the Gentiles, how much more their full number.
For I say to you, Gentiles: as long indeed as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I will honour my ministry,13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry
If, by any means, I may provoke to emulation them who are my flesh, and may save some of them.14 in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them.
For if the loss of them be the reconciliation of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
For if the firstfruit be holy, so is the lump also: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.16 If the firstfruits are holy, so is the whole batch of dough; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.
And if some of the branches be broken, and thou, being a wild olive, art ingrafted in them, and art made partaker of the root, and of the fatness of the olive tree,17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place and have come to share in the rich root of the olive tree,
Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.18 do not boast against the branches. If you do boast, consider that you do not support the root; the root supports you.
Thou wilt say then: The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.19 Indeed you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in."
Well: because of unbelief they were broken off. But thou standest by faith: be not highminded, but fear.20 That is so. They were broken off because of unbelief, but you are there because of faith. So do not become haughty, but stand in awe.
For if God hath not spared the natural branches, fear lest perhaps he also spare not thee.21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, (perhaps) he will not spare you either.
See then the goodness and the severity of God: towards them indeed that are fallen, the severity; but towards thee, the goodness of God, if thou abide in goodness, otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.22 See, then, the kindness and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but God's kindness to you, provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.
And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.23 And they also, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
For if thou wert cut out of the wild olive tree, which is natural to thee; and, contrary to nature, were grafted into the good olive tree; how much more shall they that are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?24 For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated one, how much more will they who belong to it by nature be grafted back into their own olive tree.
For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, of this mystery, (lest you should be wise in your own conceits), that blindness in part has happened in Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles should come in.25 I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not become wise (in) your own estimation: a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of the Gentiles comes in,
And so all Israel should be saved, as it is written: There shall come out of Sion, he that shall deliver, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.26 and thus all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come out of Zion, he will turn away godlessness from Jacob;
And this is to them my covenant: when I shall take away their sins.27 and this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins."
As concerning the gospel, indeed, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are most dear for the sake of the fathers.28 In respect to the gospel, they are enemies on your account; but in respect to election, they are beloved because of the patriarchs.
For the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance.29 For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.
For as you also in times past did not believe God, but now have obtained mercy, through their unbelief;30 Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience,
So these also now have not believed, for your mercy, that they also may obtain mercy.31 so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may (now) receive mercy.
For God hath concluded all in unbelief, that he may have mercy on all.32 For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.
O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments, and how unsearchable his ways!33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!
For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counsellor?34 "For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?"
Or who hath first given to him, and recompense shall be made him?35 "Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?"
For of him, and by him, and in him, are all things: to him be glory for ever. Amen.36 For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
