Acts of the Apostles 14

1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a very great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks did believe.	1 It happened that at Iconium they went to the Jewish synagogue, in the same way, and they spoke soeffectively that a great many Jews and Greeks became believers.
2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up and incensed the minds of the Gentiles against the brethren.	2 (However, the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the gentiles against the brothers and set them inopposition.)
3 A long time therefore they abode there, dealing confidently in the Lord, who gave testimony to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.	3 Accordingly Paul and Barnabas stayed on for some time, preaching fearlessly in the Lord; and heattested al they said about his gift of grace, al owing signs and wonders to be performed by them.
4 And the multitude of the city was divided; and some of them indeed held with the Jews, but some with the apostles.	4 The people in the city were divided; some supported the Jews, others the apostles,
5 And when there was an assault made by the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers, to use them contumeliously, and to stone them:	5 but eventual y with the connivance of the authorities a move was made by gentiles as well as Jews tomake attacks on them and to stone them.
6 They understanding it, fled to Lystra, and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the whole country round about, and were there preaching the gospel.	6 When they came to hear of this, they went off for safety to Lycaonia where, in the towns of Lystra andDerbe and in the surrounding country,
7 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked.	7 they preached the good news.
8 This same heard Paul speaking. Who looking upon him, and seeing that he had faith to be healed,	8 There was a man sitting there who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled frombirth;
9 Said with a loud voice: Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped up, and walked.	9 he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked at him intently and saw that he had the faith to becured.
10 And when the multitudes had seen what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice in the Lycaonian tongue, saying: The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men;	10 Paul said in a loud voice, 'Get to your feet-stand up,' and the cripple jumped up and began to walk.
11 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter: but Paul, Mercury; because he was chief speaker.	11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, 'The gods havecome down to us in human form.'
12 The priest also of Jupiter that was before the city, bringing oxen and garlands before the gate, would have offered sacrifice with the people.	12 They addressed Barnabas as Zeus, and since Paul was the principal speaker they cal ed himHermes.
13 Which, when the apostles Barnabas and Paul had heard, rending their clothes, they leaped out among the people, crying,	13 The priests of Zeus-outside-the-Gate, proposing that al the people should offer sacrifice with them,brought garlanded oxen to the gates.
14 And saying: Ye men, why do ye these things? We also are mortals, men like unto you, preaching to you to be converted from these vain things, to the living God, who made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and all things that are in them:	14 When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening they tore their clothes, and rushedinto the crowd, shouting,
15 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.	15 'Friends, what do you think you are doing? We are only human beings, mortal like yourselves. Wehave come with good news to make you turn from these empty idols to the living God who made sky and earthand the sea and all that these hold.
16 Nevertheless he left not himself without testimony, doing good from heaven, giving rains and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.	16 In the past he al owed al the nations to go their own way;
17 And speaking these things, they scarce restrained the people from sacrificing to them.	17 but even then he did not leave you without evidence of himself in the good things he does for you: hesends you rain from heaven and seasons of fruitfulness; he fil s you with food and your hearts with merriment.'
18 Now there came thither certain Jews from Antioch, and Iconium: and persuading the multitude, and stoning Paul, drew him out of the city, thinking him to be dead.	18 With this speech they just managed to prevent the crowd from offering them sacrifice.
19 But as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up and entered into the city, and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.	19 Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and turned the people against them. They stonedPaul and dragged him outside the town, thinking he was dead.
20 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and to Antioch:	20 The disciples came crowding round him but, as they did so, he stood up and went back to the town.The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.
21 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith: and that through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God.	21 Having preached the good news in that town and made a considerable number of disciples, they wentback through Lystra, Iconium and Antioch.
22 And when they had ordained to them priests in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, in whom they believed.	22 They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith, saying, 'We mustal experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God.'
23 And passing through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia.	23 In each of these churches they appointed elders, and with prayer and fasting they commended themto the Lord in whom they had come to believe.
24 And having spoken the word of the Lord in Perge, they went down into Attalia:	24 They passed through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.
25 And thence they sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been delivered to the grace of God, unto the work which they accomplished.	25 Then after proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia
26 And when they were come, and had assembled the church, they related what great things God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.	26 and from there sailed for Antioch, where they had original y been commended to the grace of God forthe work they had now completed.
27 And they abode no small time with the disciples.	27 On their arrival they assembled the church and gave an account of all that God had done with them,and how he had opened the door of faith to the gentiles.
	28 They stayed there with the disciples for some time.
