1 And they went forward and encamped in the plains of Moab, over against where Jericho is situate beyond the Jordan.	1 Partiram os filhos de Israel e acamparam nas planícies de Moab, além do Jordão, defronte de Jericó.
2 And Balac the son of Sephor, seeing all that Israel had done to the Amorrhite,	2 Balac, filho de Sefor, tinha visto tudo o que Israel fizera aos amorreus.
3 And that the Moabites were in great fear of him, and were not able to sustain his assault,	3 Moab teve um grande medo desse povo, porque era muito numeroso, e ficou aterrorizado diante dos israelitas.
4 He said to the elders of Madian: So will this people destroy all that dwell in our borders, as the ox is wont to eat the grass to the very roots. Now he was at that time king in Moab.	4 E disseram aos anciãos de Madiã: "Essa multidão vai devorar todos os nossos arredores como os bois devoram a erva do campo." Balac, filho de Sefor, reinava então em Moab.
5 He sent therefore messengers to Balaam the son of Beer, a soothsayer, who dwelt by the river of the land of the children of Ammon, to call him, and to say: Behold a people is come out of Egypt, that hath covered the face of the earth, sitting over against me.	5 Mandou, pois, mensageiros a Balaão, filho de Beor, em Petor, sobre o rio, na terra dos filhos de Amon, para que o chamassem e lhe dissessem: "Há aqui um povo que saiu do Egito, o qual cobre a face da terra, e estabeleceu-se diante de mim.
6 Come therefore, and curse this people, because it is mightier than I: if by any means I may beat them and drive them out of my land: for I know that he whom thou shalt bless is blessed, and he whom thou shalt curse is cursed.	6 Rogo-te que venhas e amaldiçoes esse povo, pois é muito mais poderoso do que eu. Talvez assim eu possa batê-lo e expulsá-lo de minha terra. Eu sei que será bendito o que abençoares e maldito o que amaldiçoares."
7 And the ancients of Moab, and the elders of Madian, went with the price of divination in their hands. And when they were come to Balaam, and had told him all the words of Balac:	7 Os anciãos de Moab e de Madiã partiram levando consigo o preço da adivinhação. Chegando junto de Balaão, referiram-lhe as palavras de Balac.
8 He answered: Tarry here this night, and I will answer whatsoever the Lord shall say to me. And while they stayed with Balaam, God came and said to him:	8 Balaão respondeu: "Passai a noite aqui, e dar-vos-ei a resposta que o Senhor me indicar." Ficaram, pois, os chefes de Moab em casa de Balaão.
9 What mean these men that are with thee?	9 Deus veio a Balaão e disse-lhe: "Quem é essa gente que tens em tua casa?"
10 He answered: Balac the son of Sephor king of the Moabites hath sent to me,	10 Balaão respondeu a Deus: "É Balac, filho de Sefor, rei de Moab, que me manda dizer:
11 Saying: Behold a people that is come out of Egypt, hath covered the face of the land: come and curse them, if by any means I may fight with them and drive them away.	11 há aqui um povo que saiu do Egito, o qual cobre a superfície da terra. Vem, pois, e amaldiçoa-o. Talvez assim possa eu batê-lo e expulsá-lo da terra."
12 And God said to Balaam : Thou shalt not go with them, nor shalt thou curse the people: because it is blessed.	12 Disse Deus a Balaão: "Não irás com eles, e não amaldiçoarás esse povo, porque é bendito."
13 And he rose in the morning and said to the princes: Go into your country, because the Lord hath forbid me to come with you.	13 Levantando-se Balaão pela manhã, disse aos chefes enviados por Balac: "Voltai para a vossa terra, pois o Senhor me proibiu de ir convosco."
14 The princes returning, said to Balac: Balaam would not come with us.	14 Os chefes de Moab retomaram o caminho e voltaram para junto de Balac: "Balaão, disseram-lhe eles, recusou vir conosco."
15 Then he sent many more and more noble than he had sent before:	15 Balac mandou-lhe de novo outros chefes, mais numerosos e mais importantes que os primeiros.
16 Who, when they were come to Balaam, said: Thus saith Balac the son of Sephor, Delay not to come to me:	16 Chegados junto a Balaão, disseram-lhe: "Eis a mensagem de Balac, filho de Sefor: rogo-te que não recuses vir ter comigo.
17 For I am ready to honour thee, and will give thee whatsoever thou wilt: come and curse this people.	17 Cumular-te-ei de honras e farei tudo o que me disseres. Vem amaldiçoar esse povo."
18 Balaam answered: If Balac would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot alter the word of the Lord my God, to speak either more or less.	18 "Ainda que o vosso senhor me desse a sua casa cheia de prata e de ouro, respondeu Balaão aos servos de Balac, eu não poderia transgredir a ordem do Senhor meu Deus, nem pouco nem muito, no que quer que seja.
19 I pray you to stay here this night also, that I may know what the Lord will answer me once more.	19 Todavia, passai ainda esta noite aqui, para que eu saiba o que o Senhor me responderá ainda desta vez."
20 God therefore came to Balaam in the night, and said to him: It these men be come to call thee, arise and go with them: yet so, that thou do what I shall command thee.	20 Deus veio a Balaão durante a noite e disse-lhe: "Já que essa gente te veio chamar, levanta-te e vai com eles. Mas só farás o que eu te disser."
21 Balaam arose in the morning, and saddling his ass went with them.	21 Balaão levantou-se de manhã, selou sua jumenta, e partiu com os chefes de Moab.
22 And God was angry. And an angel of the Lord stood in the way against Balaam, who sat on the ass, and had two servants with him.	22 O Senhor irritou-se com sua partida, e o anjo do Senhor pôs-se-lhe no caminho como obstáculo. Balaão cavalgava em sua jumenta, acompanhado de seus dois servos.
23 The ass seeing the angel standing in the way, with a drawn sword, turned herself out of the way, and went into the field. And when Balaam beat her, and had a mind to bring her again to the way,	23 A jumenta, vendo o anjo do Senhor postado no caminho, com uma espada desembainhada na mão, desviou-se e seguiu pelo campo; o adivinho a fustigava para fazê-la voltar ao caminho.
24 The angel stood in a narrow place between two walls, wherewith the vineyards were enclosed.	24 Então o anjo do Senhor pôs-se num caminho estreito que passava por entre as vinhas, com um muro de cada lado.
25 And the ass seeing him, thrust herself close to the wall, and bruised the foot of the rider. But he beat her again:	25 Vendo-o, a jumenta coseu-se com o muro, ferindo contra ele o pé de Balaão, que a fustigou de novo.
26 And nevertheless the angel going on to a narrow place, where there was no way to turn aside either to the right hand or to the left, stood to meet him.	26 O anjo do Senhor deteve-se de novo mais adiante em uma passagem estreita, onde não havia espaço para se desviar nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.
27 And when the ass saw the angel standing, she fell under the feet of the rider: who being angry beat her sides more vehemently with a staff.	27 A jumenta, ao vê-lo, deitou-se debaixo de Balaão, o qual, encolerizado, a fustigava mais fortemente com seu bastão.
28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said: What have I done to thee? Why strikest thou me, lo, now this third time?	28 Então o Senhor abriu a boca da jumenta, que disse a Balaão: "Que te fiz eu? Por que me bateste já três vezes?"
29 Balaam answered: Because thou hast deserved it, and hast served me ill: I would I had a sword that I might kill thee.	29 Porque zombaste de mim, respondeu ele. Ah, se eu tivesse uma espada na mão! Ter-te-ia já matado!"
30 The ass said: Am not I thy beast, on which thou hast been always accustomed to ride until this present day? tell me if I ever did the like thing to thee. But he said: Never.	30 A jumenta replicou: "Acaso não sou eu a tua jumenta, a qual montaste até o dia de hoje? Tenho eu porventura o costume de proceder assim contigo?" "Não", respondeu ele.
31 Forthwith the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel standing in the way with a drawn sword, and he worshipped him falling flat on the ground.	31 Então o Senhor abriu os olhos de Balaão, e ele viu o anjo do Senhor que estava no caminho com a espada desembainhada na mão. Inclinou-se e prostrou-se com a face por terra.
32 And the angel said to him: Why beatest thou thy ass these three times? I am come to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse, and contrary to me:	32 "Por que, disse-lhe o anjo do Senhor, feriste três vezes a tua jumenta? Eu vim opor-me a ti, porque segues um caminho que te leva ao precipício.
33 And unless the ass had turned out of the way, giving place to me who stood against thee, I had slain thee, and she should have lived.	33 Vendo-me, a tua jumenta desviou-se por três vezes diante de mim. Se ela não o tivesse feito, ter-te-ia já matado, e ela ficaria viva."
34 Balaam said: I have sinned, not knowing that thou didst stand against me: and now if it displease thee that I go, I will return.	34 Balaão disse ao anjo do Senhor: "Pequei. Eu não sabia que estavas postado no caminho para deter-me. Se minha viagem te desagrada, voltarei."
35 The angel said: Go with these men, and see thou speak no other thing than what I shall command thee. He went therefore with the princes.	35 "Segue esses homens, respondeu-lhe o anjo do Senhor, mas cuida de só proferir as palavras que eu te disser." E Balaão partiu com os chefes de Balac.
36 And when Balac heard it he came forth to meet him in a town of the Moabites, that is situate in the uttermost borders of Arnon.	36 Quando Balac soube de sua chegada, subiu-lhe ao encontro até a cidade de Moab, na fronteira do Arnon, na extremidade daquela terra,
37 And he said to Balaam: I sent messengers to call thee, why didst thou not come immediately to me? was it because I am not able to reward thy coming?	37 e disse-lhe: "Mandei mensageiros chamar-te. Por que não vieste logo? Não posso eu tratar-te com honras?"
38 He answered him: Lo, here I am: shall I have power to speak any other thing but that which God shall put in my mouth?	38 "Eis-me aqui, respondeu Balaão; mas agora ser-me-á possível dizer algo de mim mesmo? Só direi o que Deus me puser na boca, nada mais."
39 So they went on together, and came into a city, that was in the uttermost borders of his kingdom.	39 E partiram os dois para Quiriat-Chutsot.
40 And when Balac had killed oxen and sheep, he sent presents to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.	40 Balac imolou em sacrifício bois e ovelhas, dos quais mandou algumas porções a Balaão e aos chefes que o acompanhavam.
41 And when morning was come, he brought him to the high places of Baal, and he beheld the uttermost part of the people.	41 No dia seguinte pela manhã, Balac tomou consigo o adivinho e levou-o a Bamot-Baal, de onde se podiam ver as últimas linhas do acampamento de Israel.
