Sirach 18

1 He that liveth for ever created all things together. God only shall be justified, and he remaineth an invincible king for ever.	1 Colui che vive in eterno ha creato l’intero universo.
2 Who is able to declare his works?	2 Il Signore soltanto è riconosciuto giusto e non c’è altri al di fuori di lui.
3 For who shall search out his glorious acts?	3 Egli regge il mondo con il palmo della mano e tutto obbedisce alla sua volontà; con il suo potere egli è il re di tutte le cose e in esse distingue il sacro dal profano.
4 And who shall shew forth the power of his majesty? or who shall be able to declare his mercy?	4 A nessuno è possibile svelare le sue opere e chi può esplorare le sue grandezze?
5 Nothing may be taken away, nor added, neither is it possible to find out the glorious works of God:	5 La potenza della sua maestà chi potrà misurarla? Chi riuscirà a narrare le sue misericordie?
6 When a man hath done, then shall he begin: and when he leaveth off, he shall be at a loss.	6 Non c’è nulla da togliere e nulla da aggiungere, non è possibile scoprire le meraviglie del Signore.
7 What is man, and what is his grace? and what is his good, or what is his evil?	7 Quando l’uomo ha finito, allora comincia, quando si ferma, allora rimane perplesso.
8 The number of the days of men at the most are a hundred years: as a drop of water of the sea are they esteemed: and as a pebble of the sand, so are a few years compared to eternity.	8 Che cos’è l’uomo? A che cosa può servire? Qual è il suo bene e qual è il suo male?
9 Therefore God is patient in them, and poureth forth his mercy upon them.	9 Quanto al numero dei giorni dell’uomo, cento anni sono già molti, ma il sonno eterno di ognuno è imprevedibile a tutti.
10 He hath seen the presumption of their heart that it is wicked, and hath known their end that it is evil.	10 Come una goccia d’acqua nel mare e un granello di sabbia, così questi pochi anni in un giorno dell’eternità.
11 Therefore bath he filled up his mercy in their favour, and hath shewn them the way of justice.	11 Per questo il Signore è paziente verso di loro ed effonde su di loro la sua misericordia.
12 The compassion of man is toward his neighbour: but the mercy of God is upon all flesh.	12 Vede e sa che la loro sorte è penosa, perciò abbonda nel perdono.
13 He hath mercy, and teacheth, and correcteth, as a shepherd doth his hock.	13 La misericordia dell’uomo riguarda il suo prossimo, la misericordia del Signore ogni essere vivente. Egli rimprovera, corregge, ammaestra e guida come un pastore il suo gregge.
14 He hath mercy on him that receiveth the discipline of mercy, and that maketh haste in his judgments.	14 Ha pietà di chi si lascia istruire e di quanti sono zelanti per le sue decisioni.
15 My son, in thy good deeds, make no complaint, and when thou givest any thing, add not grief by an evil word.	15 Figlio, nel fare il bene non aggiungere rimproveri e a ogni dono parole amare.
16 Shall not the dew assuage the heat? so also the good word is better than the gift.	16 La rugiada non mitiga forse il calore? Così una parola è migliore del dono.
17 Lo, is not a word better than a gift? but both are with a justified man.	17 Ecco, una parola non vale più di un dono ricco? Ambedue si trovano nell’uomo caritatevole.
18 A fool will upbraid bitterly: and a gift of one ill taught consumeth the eyes.	18 Lo stolto rimprovera senza riguardo, il dono dell’invidioso fa lacrimare gli occhi.
19 Before judgment prepare thee justice, and learn before thou speak.	19 Prima di parlare, infórmati, cùrati ancor prima di ammalarti.
20 Before sickness take a medicine, and before judgment examine thyself, and thou shalt find mercy in the sight of God.	20 Prima del giudizio esamina te stesso, così al momento del verdetto troverai perdono.
21 Humble thyself before thou art sick, and in the time of sickness shew thy conversation.	21 Umìliati, prima di cadere malato, e quando hai peccato, mostra pentimento.
22 Let nothing hinder thee from praying always, and be not afraid to be justified even to death: for the reward of God continueth for ever.	22 Nulla ti impedisca di soddisfare un voto al tempo giusto, non aspettare fino alla morte per sdebitarti.
23 Before prayer prepare thy soul: and be not as a man that tempteth God.	23 Prima di fare un voto prepara te stesso, non fare come un uomo che tenta il Signore.
24 Remember the wrath that shall be at the last day, and the time of repaying when he shall turn away his face.	24 Ricòrdati della collera nei giorni della fine, del tempo della vendetta, quando egli distoglierà lo sguardo da te.
25 Remember poverty is the time of abundance, and the necessities of poverty in the day of riches.	25 Ricòrdati della carestia nel tempo dell’abbondanza, della povertà e dell’indigenza nei giorni della ricchezza.
26 From the morning until the evening the time shall be changed, and all these are swift in the eyes of God.	26 Dal mattino alla sera il tempo cambia, tutto è effimero davanti al Signore.
27 A wise man will fear in every thing, and in the days of sine will beware of sloth.	27 Un uomo saggio è circospetto in ogni cosa, nei giorni del peccato si astiene dalla colpa.
28 Every man of understanding knoweth wisdom, and will give praise to him that findeth her.	28 Ogni uomo assennato conosce la sapienza e rende omaggio a colui che la trova.
29 They that were of good understanding in words, have also done wisely themselves: and have understood truth and justice, and have poured forth proverbs and judgments.	29 Quelli istruiti nel parlare, anch’essi diventano saggi, effondono come pioggia massime adeguate. Vale più la fiducia in un unico Signore che aderire a un morto con un cuore morto.
30 Go not after thy lusts, but turn away from thy own will.	30 Non seguire le passioni, poni un freno ai tuoi desideri.
31 If thou give to thy soul her desires, she will make thee a joy to thy enemies.	31 Se ti concedi lo sfogo della passione, essa ti renderà oggetto di scherno per i tuoi nemici.
32 Take no pleasure in riotous assemblies, be they ever so small: for their concertation is continual.	32 Non rallegrarti per i molti piaceri, per non impoverirti con i loro costi.
33 Make not thyself poor by borrowing to contribute to feasts when thou hast nothing in thy purse : for thou shalt be an enemy to thy own life.	33 Non ridurti in miseria per i debiti dei banchetti, quando non hai nulla nella borsa, perché sarà un’insidia alla tua propria vita.
