1 Again, another designing to sail, and beginning to make his voyage through the raging waves, calleth upon a piece of wood more frail than the wood that carrieth him.	1 En voici un autre qui se prépare à naviguer. Avant d’affronter la fureur des flots, il invoque un morceau de bois plus fragile encore que le bateau qui le porte.
2 For this the desire of gain devised, and the workman built it by his skill.	2 Ce bateau, il est né du désir du gain, et c’est l’art du technicien qui l’a réalisé,
3 But thy providence, O Father, governeth it: for thou hast made a way even in the sea, and a most sure path among the waves,	3 mais c’est ta Providence, ô Père, qui le conduit. C’est toi qui as ouvert un chemin dans la mer et tracé une route sûre parmi les flots.
4 Shewing that thou art able to save out of all things, yea though a man went to sea without art.	4 Tu nous as montré ainsi que tu peux nous sauver où que ce soit, si bien qu’on s’embarque même sans grande expérience.
5 But that the works of thy wisdom might not be idle: therefore men also trust their lives even to a little wood, and passing over the sea by ship are saved.	5 Tu ne veux pas que les hommes, œuvres de ta Sagesse, restent sans rien faire, et voilà qu’ils confient leur vie à un simple bout de bois: un radeau leur permet de traverser les vagues sans dommages.
6 And from the beginning also when the proud giants perished, the hope of the world fleeing to a vessel, which was governed by thy hand, left to the world seed of generation.	6 Déjà aux temps anciens, tandis que périssaient les géants orgueilleux, le juste qui portait l’espoir de l’univers se réfugia sur un radeau; conduit par ta main, il laissa au monde la semence d’une humanité nouvelle.
7 For blessed is the wood, by which justice cometh.	7 Béni soit le bois qui fut l’instrument de ton salut!
8 But the idol that is made by hands, is cursed, as well it, as he that made it: he because he made it; and it because being frail it is called a god.	8 Quant à l’idole fabriquée et celui qui l’a faite, qu’ils soient maudits l’un et l’autre: l’ouvrier, parce qu’il l’a faite, et la chose, parce qu’elle a été appelée dieu!
9 But to God the wicked and his wickedness are hateful alike.	9 Tous les deux sont insupportables pour Dieu, l’impie et le produit de son impiété;
10 For that which is made, together with him that made it, shall suffer torments.	10 l’œuvre sera détruite avec son artisan!
11 Therefore there shall be no respect had even to the idols of the Gentiles: because the creatures of God are turned to an abomination, and a temptation to the souls of men, and a snare to the feet of the unwise.	11 C’est pourquoi le châtiment atteindra, même les idoles des nations, parce qu’elles sont des choses abominables au sein de la création: elles font choir les âmes des humains, et les insensés se prennent à leur piège.
12 For the beginning of fornication is the devising of idols: and the invention of them is the corruption of life.	12 L’invention des idoles a été le commencement de la perversion; cette invention a corrompu la vie.
13 For neither were they from the beginning, neither shall they be for ever.	13 Car elles n’existaient pas à l’origine et elles ne dureront pas toujours.
14 For by the vanity of men they came into the world: and therefore they shall be found to come shortly to an end.	14 La vanité humaine les a introduites dans le monde et voilà pourquoi leur destruction prochaine est décidée.
15 For a father being afflicted with bitter grief, made to himself the image of his son who was quickly taken away: and him who then had died as a man, he began now to worship as a god, and appointed him rites and sacrifices among his servants.	15 Voici un père affligé par un deuil brutal; il fait faire une image de son enfant trop tôt disparu, et puis il honore comme un dieu celui qui n’était qu’un défunt. Il transmet à sa famille des rites et des cérémonies,
16 Then in process of time, wicked custom prevailing, this error was kept as a law, and statues were worshipped by the commandment of tyrants.	16 et avec le temps cette coutume impie se fortifie jusqu’à devenir obligatoire pour tous.
17 And those whom men could not honour in presence, because they dwelt far off, they brought their resemblance from afar, and made an express image of the king whom they had a mind to honour: that by this their diligence, they might honour as present, him that was absent.	17 De la même façon des statues ont été vénérées sur l’ordre des princes. Ceux de leurs sujets qui ne pouvaient les honorer en personne, car ils habitaient au loin, ont voulu avoir leur portrait. Grâce à cette image, ils pouvaient vénérer le roi comme s’il était présent.
18 And to worshipping of these, the singular diligence also of the artificer helped to set forward the ignorant.	18 Le talent de l’artiste donna de l’ampleur à ce culte parmi ceux qui ne connaissaient pas le souverain.
19 For he being willing to please him that employed him, laboured with all his art to make the resemblance in the best manner.	19 Dans le désir de lui plaire, on s’ingénia à le représenter plus beau que nature.
20 And the multitude of men, carried away by the beauty of the work, took him now for a god that a little before was but honoured as a man.	20 La chose était si parfaite que la foule se laissa séduire: on en vint rapidement à voir un dieu en celui qu’on vénérait.
21 And this was the occasion of deceiving human life: for men serving either their affection, or their kings, gave the incommunicable name to stones and wood.	21 Voilà comment l’image est devenue un piège pour les vivants: des hommes frappés par le malheur ou asservis aux puissants ont donné à des pierres ou à du bois le Nom incommunicable.
22 And it was not enough for them to err about the knowledge of God, but whereas they lived in a great war of ignorance, they call so many and so great evils peace.	22 Une telle erreur dans la connaissance de Dieu ne leur suffisait pas. L’ignorance les a amenés à de telles contradictions qu’ils ont regardé comme normaux les pires excès:
23 For either they sacrifice their own children, or use hidden sacrifices, or keep watches full of madness,	23 les meurtres d’enfants offerts en sacrifice, les rites secrets, les orgies furieuses et extravagantes!
24 So that now they neither keep life, nor marriage undefiled, but one killeth another through envy, or grieveth him by adultery:	24 Plus la moindre pureté dans leur vie ou leur mariage: on supprime l’autre par traîtrise, ou on le déshonore par l’adultère.
25 And all things are mingled together, blood, murder, theft and dissimulation, corruption and unfaithfulness, tumults and perjury, disquieting of the good,	25 Partout ce n’est que sang et meurtres, vols, fraudes, corruption, mauvaise foi, révoltes, parjures,
26 Forgetfulness of God, defiling of souls, changing of nature, disorder in marriage, and the irregularity of adultery and uncleaness.	26 désarroi des gens de bien, oubli des bienfaits, scandales, pratiques contre nature, désordres dans le mariage, adultère, débauche.
27 For the worship of abominable idols is the cause, and the beginning and end of all evil.	27 Le culte de ces dieux qui n’en méritent pas le nom, est le commencement, la cause et le terme du mal.
28 For either they are mad when they are merry: or they prophesy lies, or they live unjustly, or easily forswear themselves.	28 Il y en a qui aiment s’exciter jusqu’au délire, et alors ils rendent des faux oracles. D’autres vivent dans le mal et vont jusqu’à se parjurer;
29 For whilst they trust in idols, which are without life, though they swear amiss, they look not to be hurt.	29 vu qu’ils s’appuient sur des idoles sans vie, comment auraient-ils peur que leurs faux-serments soient punis?
30 But for two things they shall be justly punished, because they have thought not well of God, giving heed to idols, and have sworn unjustly, in guile despising justice.	30 Mais ils seront châtiés en toute justice pour ce double motif: d’abord, parce qu’ils ont méconnu Dieu en s’attachant à des idoles; ensuite, parce qu’ils ont fraudé, faisant de faux-serments au mépris de ce qui est sacré.
31 For it is not the power of them, by whom they swear, but the just vengeance of sinners always punisheth the transgression of the unjust.	31 Même si les idoles sont impuissantes, le châtiment réservé aux pécheurs atteindra les impies.
