Proverbs 13

DOUAI-RHEIMSJERUSALEM
A wise son heareth the doctrine of his father: but he that is a scorner, beareth not when he is reproved.1 Le fils sage écoute la discipline de son père, le railleur n'entend pas le reproche.
Of the fruit of his own mouth shall a man be filled with good things: but the soul of transgressors is wicked.2 Par le fruit de sa bouche l'homme se nourrit de ce qui est bon, mais l'âme des traîtres se repaît deviolence.
He that keepeth his mouth, keepeth his soul: but he that hath no guard on his speech shall meet with evils.3 Qui veille sur sa bouche garde sa vie, qui ouvre grand ses lèvres se perd.
The sluggard willeth and willeth not: but the soul of them that work, shall be made fat.4 Le paresseux attend, mais rien pour sa faim; la faim des diligents est apaisée.
The just shall hate a lying word: but the wicked confoundeth, and shall be confounded.5 Le juste hait la parole mensongère, mais le méchant déshonore et diffame.
Justice keepeth the way of the innocent: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.6 La justice garde celui dont la voie est honnête, le péché cause la ruine du méchant.
One is as it were rich, when he hath nothing: and another is as it were poor, when he hath great riches.7 Tel joue au riche qui n'a rien, tel fait le pauvre qui a de grands biens.
The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but he that is poor beareth not reprehension.8 Rançon d'une vie d'homme: sa richesse; mais le pauvre n'entend pas le reproche.
The light of the just giveth joy: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.9 La lumière des justes est joyeuse, la lampe des méchants s'éteint.
Among the proud there are always contentions: but they that do all things with counsel, are ruled by wisdom.10 Insolence n'engendre que chicane; chez qui accepte les conseils se trouve la sagesse.
Substance got in haste shall be diminished: but that which by little and little is gathered with the hand shall increase.11 Fortune hâtive va diminuant, qui amasse peu à peu s'enrichit.
Hope that is deferred afflicteth the soul: desire when it cometh is a tree of life.12 Espoir différé rend le coeur malade; c'est un arbre de vie que le désir satisfait.
Whosoever speaketh ill of any thing, bindeth himself for the time to come: but he that feareth the commandment, shall dwell in peace. Deceitful souls go astray in sins: the just are merciful, and shew mercy.13 Qui méprise la parole se perdra, qui respecte le commandement sera sauf.
The law of the wise is a fountain of life, that he may decline from the ruin of death.14 L'enseignement du sage est source de vie pour éviter les pièges de la mort.
Good instruction shall give grace: in the way of scorners is a deep pit.15 Un grand bon sens procure la faveur, la voie des traîtres est dure.
The prudent mall doth all things with counsel: but he that is a fool, layeth open his folly.16 Tout homme avisé agit à bon escient, le sot étale sa folie.
The messenger of the wicked shall fall into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.17 Messager malfaisant tombe dans le malheur, messager fidèle apporte la guérison.
Poverty and shame to him that refuseth instruction: but he that yieldeth to reproof, shall be glorified.18 Misère et mépris à qui abandonne la discipline, honneur à qui observe la réprimande.
The desire that is accomplished, delighteth the soul: fools hate them that flee from evil things.19 Désir satisfait, douceur pour l'âme. Abomination pour les sots: se détourner du mal.
He that walketh with the wise, shall be wise: a friend of fools shall become like to them.20 Qui chemine avec les sages devient sage, qui hante les sots devient mauvais.
,21Evil pursueth sinners: and to the just good shall be repaid.21 Aux trousses du pécheur, le malheur; le bonheur récompense les justes.
The good man leaveth heirs, sons, and grandsons: and the substance of the sinner is kept for the just.22 Aux enfants de ses enfants l'homme de bien laisse un héritage, au juste est réservée la fortunedes pécheurs.
Much food is in the tillage of fathers: but for others it is gathered with out judgment.23 Riche en nourriture, la culture des pauvres; il en est qui périssent faute d'équité.
He that spareth the rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him correcteth him betimes.24 Qui épargne la baguette hait son fils, qui l'aime prodigue la correction.
The just eateth and filleth his soul: but the belly of the wicked is never to be filled.25 Le juste mange et se rassasie, le ventre des méchants crie famine.
