DOUAI-RHEIMSNOVA VULGATA
1 Moreover Eliu spoke these words :1 Igitur Eliu haec rursum locutus est:
2 Doth thy thought seem right to thee, that thou shouldst say : I am more just than God?2 “ Numquid aequa tibi videtur tua cogitatio,
ut diceres: “Iustificatio mea coram Deo”?
3 For thou saidst : That which is right doth not please thee : or what will it profit thee if I sin?3 Dixisti enim: “Quid ad te?
Vel quid tibi proderit, si ego peccavero?”.
4 Therefore I will answer thy words, and thy friends with thee.4 Itaque ego respondebo sermonibus tuis
et amicis tuis tecum.
5 Look up to heaven and see, and behold the sky, that it is higher than thee.5 Suspice caelum et intuere
et contemplare nubes quod altiores te sint.
6 If thou sin, what shalt thou hurt him? and if thy iniquities be multiplied, what shalt thou do against him?6 Si peccaveris, quid facies ei?
Et si multiplicatae fuerint iniquitates tuae, quid facies contra eum?
7 And if thou do justly, what shalt thou give him, or what shall he receive of thy hand?7 Porro si iuste egeris, quid donabis ei?
Aut quid de manu tua accipiet?
8 Thy wickedness may hurt a man that is like thee : and thy justice may help the son of man.8 Homini, qui similis tui est, nocebit impietas tua,
et filium hominis adiuvabit iustitia tua.
9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they shall cry out : and shall wail for the violence of the arm of tyrants.9 Propter multitudinem oppressorum clamabunt
et eiulabunt propter vim brachii tyrannorum,
10 And he hath not said : Where is God, who made me, who hath given songs in the night?10 sed nemo dixit: “Ubi est Deus, qui fecit me,
qui dedit carmina in nocte,
11 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and instructeth us more than the fowls of the air.11 qui docet nos super iumenta terrae
et super volucres caeli erudit nos?”.
12 There shall they cry, and he will not hear, because of the pride of evil men.12 Ibi clamabunt, et non exaudiet,
propter superbiam malorum.
13 God therefore will not hear in vain, and the Almighty will look into the causes of every one.13 Etiam, frustra: non audiet Deus,
et Omnipotens non intuebitur.
14 Yea when thou shalt say : He considereth not : be judged before him, and expect him.14 Omnino cum dixeris: “Non considerat”,
iudicium est coram illo, et exspectas eum.
15 For he doth not now bring on his fury, neither doth he revenge wickedness exceedingly.15 Et nunc cum dicis: “Ira eius poenas non infert,
nec ulciscitur scelus valde”,
16 Therefore Job openeth his mouth in vain, and multiplieth words without knowledge.16 Iob frustra aperit os suum
et absque scientia verba multiplicat ”.
