1 And Eliphaz the Themanite, answered, and said:	1 Elifaz di Teman prese a dire:
2 Will a wise man answer as if he were speaking in the wind, and fill his stomach with burning heat?	2 «Potrebbe il saggio rispondere con ragioni campate in aria e riempirsi il ventre del vento d’oriente?
3 Thou reprovest him by words, who is not equal to thee, and thou speakest that which is not good for thee.	3 Si difende egli con parole inutili e con discorsi inconcludenti?
4 As much as is in thee, thou hast made void fear, and hast taken away prayers from before God.	4 Ma tu distruggi la religione e abolisci la preghiera innanzi a Dio.
5 For thy iniquity hath taught thy mouth, and thou imitatest the tongue of blasphemers.	5 Infatti la tua malizia istruisce la tua bocca e scegli il linguaggio degli astuti.
6 Thy own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I: and thy own lips shall answer thee.	6 Non io, ma la tua bocca ti condanna e le tue labbra attestano contro di te.
7 Art thou the first man that was born, or wast thou made before the hills ?	7 Sei forse tu il primo uomo che è nato, o prima dei monti sei stato generato?
8 Hast thou heard God's counsel, and shall his wisdom be inferior to thee?	8 Hai tu avuto accesso ai segreti consigli di Dio e ti sei appropriato tu solo della sapienza?
9 What knowest thou that we are ignorant of? what dost thou understand that we know not?	9 Che cosa sai tu, che noi non sappiamo? Che cosa capisci, che non sia chiaro anche a noi?
10 There are with us also aged and ancient men, much elder than thy fathers.	10 Sia il vecchio che il canuto sono fra di noi, carichi di anni più di tuo padre.
11 Is it a great matter that God should comfort thee? but thy wicked words hinder this.	11 Poca cosa sono per te le consolazioni di Dio e una parola moderata rivolta a te?
12 Why doth thy heart elevate thee, and why dost thou stare with thy eyes, as if they were thinking great things ?	12 Perché il tuo cuore ti stravolge, perché ammiccano i tuoi occhi,
13 Why doth thy spirit swell against God, to utter such words out of thy mouth ?	13 quando volgi contro Dio il tuo animo e fai uscire tali parole dalla tua bocca?
14 What is man that he should be without spot, and he that is born of a woman that he should appear just?	14 Che cos’è l’uomo perché si ritenga puro, perché si dica giusto un nato da donna?
15 Behold among his saints none is unchangeable, and the heavens are not pure in his sight.	15 Ecco, neppure nei suoi santi egli ha fiducia e i cieli non sono puri ai suoi occhi,
16 How much more is man abominable, and unprofitable, who drinketh iniquity like water?	16 tanto meno un essere abominevole e corrotto, l’uomo che beve l’iniquità come acqua.
17 I will shew thee, hear me : and I mill tell thee what I have seen.	17 Voglio spiegartelo, ascoltami, ti racconterò quel che ho visto,
18 Wise men confess and hide not their fathers.	18 quello che i saggi hanno riferito, che non hanno celato ad essi i loro padri;
19 To whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger hath passed among them.	19 solo a loro fu concessa questa terra, né straniero alcuno era passato in mezzo a loro.
20 The wicked man is proud all his days, and the number of the years of his tyranny is uncertain.	20 Per tutti i giorni della vita il malvagio si tormenta; sono contati gli anni riservati al violento.
21 The sound of dread is always in his ears: and when there is peace, he always suspecteth treason.	21 Voci di spavento gli risuonano agli orecchi e in piena pace si vede assalito dal predone.
22 He believeth not that he may return from darkness to light, looking round about for the sword on every side.	22 Non crede di potersi sottrarre alle tenebre, egli si sente destinato alla spada.
23 When he moveth himself to seek bread, he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.	23 Abbandonato in pasto ai falchi, sa che gli è preparata la rovina. Un giorno tenebroso
24 Tribulation shall terrify him, and distress shall surround him, as a king that is prepared for the battle.	24 lo spaventa, la miseria e l’angoscia l’assalgono come un re pronto all’attacco,
25 For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and hath strengthened himself against the Almighty.	25 perché ha steso contro Dio la sua mano, ha osato farsi forte contro l’Onnipotente;
26 He hath run against him with his neck raised up, and is armed with a fat neck.	26 correva contro di lui a testa alta, al riparo del curvo spessore del suo scudo,
27 Fatness hath covered his face, and the fat hangeth down on his sides.	27 poiché aveva la faccia coperta di grasso e pinguedine intorno ai suoi fianchi.
28 He hath dwelt in desolate cities, and in desert houses that are reduced into heaps.	28 Avrà dimora in città diroccate, in case dove non si abita più, destinate a diventare macerie.
29 He shall not be enriched, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he push his root in the earth.	29 Non si arricchirà, non durerà la sua fortuna, le sue proprietà non si estenderanno sulla terra.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness: the flame shall dry up his branches, and he shall be taken away by the breath of his own month.	30 Alle tenebre non sfuggirà, il fuoco seccherà i suoi germogli e il vento porterà via i suoi fiori.
31 He shall not believe, being vainly deceived by error, that he may be redeemed with any price.	31 Non si affidi alla vanità che è fallace, perché vanità sarà la sua ricompensa.
32 Before his days be full he shall perish: and his hands shall wither away.	32 Prima del tempo saranno disseccati, i suoi rami non rinverdiranno più.
33 He shall be blasted as a vine when its grapes are in the first flower, and as an olive tree that casteth its flower.	33 Sarà spogliato come vigna della sua uva ancora acerba e getterà via come ulivo i suoi fiori,
34 For the congregation of the hypocrite is barren, and fire shall devour their tabernacles, who love to take bribes.	34 poiché la stirpe dell’empio è sterile e il fuoco divora le tende dell’uomo venale.
35 He hath conceived sorrow, and hath brought forth iniquity, and his womb prepareth deceits.	35 Concepisce malizia e genera sventura e nel suo seno alleva l’inganno».
