DOUAI-RHEIMSSAGRADA BIBLIA
Now it came to pass, after that Alexander the son of Philip the Macedonian, who first reigned in Greece, coming out of the land of Cethim, had overthrown Darius king of the Persians and Medes:1 Ora, aconteceu que, já senhor da Grécia, Alexandre, filho de Filipe da Macedônia, oriundo da terra de Cetim, derrotou também Dario, rei dos persas e dos medos e reinou em seu lugar.
He fought many battles, and took the strong holds of all, and slew the kings of the earth:2 Empreendeu inúmeras guerras, apoderou-se de muitas cidades e matou muitos reis.
And he went through even to the ends of the earth, and took the spoils of many nations: and the earth was quiet before him.3 Avançou até os confins da terra e apoderou-se das riquezas de vários povos, e diante dele silenciou a terra. Tornando-se altivo, seu coração ensoberbeceu-se.
And he gathered a power, and a very strong army: and his heart was exalted and lifted up.4 Reuniu um imenso exército,
And he subdued countries of nations, and princes: and they became tributaries to him.5 impôs seu poderio aos países, às nações e reis, e todos se tornaram seus tributários.
And after these things, he fell down upon his bed, and knew that he should die.6 Enfim, adoeceu e viu que a morte se aproximava.
And he called his servants the nobles that were brought up with him from his youth: and he divided his kingdom among them, while he was yet alive.7 Convocou então os mais considerados dentre os seus cortesãos, companheiros desde sua juventude, e, ainda em vida, repartiu entre eles o império.
And Alexander reigned twelve years, and he died.8 Alexandre havia reinado doze anos ao morrer.
And his servants made themselves kings every one in his place:9 Seus familiares receberam cada qual seu próprio reino.
And they all put crowns upon themselves after his death, and their sons after them many years, and evils were multiplied in the earth.10 Puseram todos o diadema depois de sua morte, e, após eles, seus filhos durante muitos anos; e males em quantidade multiplicaram-se sobre a terra.
And there came out of them a wicked root, Antiochus the Illustrious, the son of king Antiochus, who had been a hostage at Rome: and he reigned in the hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.11 Desses reis originou-se uma raiz de pecado: Antíoco Epífanes, filho do rei Antíoco, que havia estado em Roma, como refém, e que reinou no ano cento e trinta e sete do reino dos gregos.
In those days there went out of Israel wicked men, and they persuaded many, saying: Let us go, and make a covenant with the heathens that are round about us: for since we departed from them, many evils have befallen us.12 Nessa época saíram também de Israel uns filhos perversos que seduziram a muitos outros, dizendo: Vamos e façamos alianças com os povos que nos cercam, porque, desde que nós nos separamos deles, caímos em infortúnios sem conta.
And the word seemed good in their eyes.13 Semelhante linguagem pareceu-lhes boa,
And some of the people determined to do this, and went to the king: and he gave them license to do after the ordinances of the heathens.14 e houve entre o povo quem se apressasse a ir ter com o rei, o qual concedeu a licença de adotarem os costumes pagãos.
And they built a place of exercise in Jerusalem, according to the laws of the nations:15 Edificaram em Jerusalém um ginásio como os gentios, dissimularam os sinais da circuncisão, afastaram-se da aliança com Deus, para se unirem aos estrangeiros e venderam-se ao pecado.
And they made themselves prepuces, and departed from the holy covenant, and joined themselves to the heathens, and were sold to do evil.16 Quando seu reino lhe pareceu bem consolidado, concebeu Antíoco o desejo de possuir o Egito, a fim de reinar sobre dois reinos.
And the kingdom was established before Antiochus, and he had a mind to reign over the land of Egypt, that he might reign over two kingdoms.17 Entrou, pois, no Egito com um poderoso exército, com carros, elefantes, cavalos e uma numerosa esquadra.
And he entered into Egypt with a great multitude, with chariots and elephants, and horsemen, and a great number of ships:18 Investiu contra Ptolomeu, rei do Egito, o qual, tomado de pânico, fugiu. Foram muitos os que sucumbiram sob seus golpes.
And he made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt, but Ptolemee was afraid at his presence, and fled, and many were wounded unto death.19 Tornou-se ele senhor das fortalezas do Egito, e apoderou-se das riquezas do país.
And he took the strong cities in the land of Egypt: and he took the spoils of the land of Egypt.20 Após ter derrotado o Egito, pelo ano cento e quarenta e três, regressou Antíoco e atacou Israel, subindo a Jerusalém com um forte exército.
And after Antiochus had ravaged Egypt in the hundred and forty-third year, he returned and went up against Israel.21 Penetrou cheio de orgulho no santuário, tomou o altar de ouro, o candelabro das luzes com todos os seus pertences,
And he went up to Jerusalem with a great multitude.22 a mesa da proposição, os vasos, as alfaias, os turíbulos de ouro, o véu, as coroas, os ornamentos de ouro da fachada, e arrancou as embutiduras.
And he proudly entered into the sanctuary, and took away the golden altar, and the candlestick of light, and all the vessels thereof, and the table of proposition, and the pouring vessels, and the vials, and the little mortars of gold, and the veil, and the crowns, and the golden ornament that was before the temple: and he broke them all in pieces.23 Tomou a prata, o ouro, os vasos preciosos e os tesouros ocultos que encontrou.
And he took the silver and gold, and the precious vessels: and he took the hidden treasures which he found: and when he had taken all away he departed into his own country.24 Arrebatando tudo consigo, regressou à sua terra, após massacrar muitos judeus e pronunciar palavras injuriosas
And he made a great slaughter of men, and spoke very proudly.25 Foi isso um motivo de desolação em extremo para todo o Israel.
And there was great mourning in Israel, and in every place where they were.26 Príncipes e anciãos gemeram, jovens e moças perderam sua alegria e a beleza das mulheres empanou-se.
And the princes, and the ancients mourned, and the virgins and the young men were made feeble, and the beauty of the women was changed.27 O recém-casado lamentava-se, e a esposa chorava no leito nupcial.
Every bridegroom took up lamentation: and the bride that set in the marriage bed, mourned:28 A própria terra tremia por todos os seus habitantes e a casa de Jacó cobriu-se de vergonha.
And the land was moved for the inhabitants thereof, and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion.29 Dois anos após, Antíoco enviou um oficial a cobrar o tributo nas cidades de Judá. Chegou ele a Jerusalém com uma numerosa tropa;
And after two full years the king sent the chief collector of his tributes to the cities of Juda, and he came to Jerusalem with a great multitude.30 dirigiu-se aos habitantes com palavras pacíficas, mas astuciosas, nas quais acreditaram; em seguida lançou-se de improviso sobre a cidade, pilhou-a seriamente e matou muita gente.
And he spoke to them peaceable words in deceit: and they believed him.31 Saqueou-a, incendiou-a, destruiu as casas e os muros em derredor.
And he fell upon the city suddenly, and struck it with a great slaughter, and destroyed much people in Israel.32 Seus soldados conduziram ao cativeiro as mulheres e as crianças e apoderaram-se dos rebanhos.
And he took the spoils of the city, and burnt it with fire, and threw down the houses thereof, and the walls thereof round about:33 Cercaram a Cidade de Davi com uma grande e sólida muralha, com possantes torres, tornando-se assim ela sua fortaleza.
And they took the women captive, and the children, and the cattle they possessed.34 Instalaram ali uma guarnição brutal de gente sem leis, fortificaram-se aí;
And they built the city of David with a great and strong wall, and with strong towers, and made it a fortress for them:35 e ajuntaram armas e provisões. Reunindo todos os espólios do saque de Jerusalém, ali os acumularam. Constituíram desse modo uma grande ameaça.
And they placed there a sinful nation, wicked men, and they fortified themselves therein: and they stored up armour, and victuals, and gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem;36 Serviram de cilada para o templo, e um inimigo constantemente incitado contra o povo de Israel,
And laid them up there: and they became a great snare.37 derramando sangue inocente ao redor do templo e profanando o santuário.
And this was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary, and an evil devil in Israel.38 Por causa deles, os habitantes de Jerusalém fugiram, e só ficaram lá os estrangeiros.
And the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away by reason of them, and the city was made the habitation to strangers, and she became a stranger to her own seed, and her children forsook her.40 Quanto fora ela honrada, agora foi desprezada, e sua exaltação converteu-se em tormento.
Her sanctuary was desolate like a wilderness, her festival days were turned into mourning, her sabbaths into reproach, her honours were brought to nothing.41 Então o rei Antíoco publicou para todo o reino um edito, prescrevendo que todos os povos formassem um único povo e
Her dishonour was increased according to her glory, and her excellency was turned into mourning.42 que abandonassem suas leis particulares. Todos os gentios se conformaram com essa ordem do rei, e 43. muitos de Israel adotaram a sua religião, sacrificando aos ídolos e violando o sábado.
And king Antiochus wrote to all his kingdom, that all the people should be one: and every one should leave his own law.
And all nations consented according to the word of king Antiochus.44 Por intermédio de mensageiros, o rei enviou, a Jerusalém e às cidades de Judá, cartas prescrevendo que aceitassem os costumes dos outros povos da terra,
And many of Israel consented to his service, and they sacrificed to idols, and profaned the sabbath.45 suspendessem os holocaustos, os sacrifícios e as libações no templo, violassem os sábados e as festas, 46. profanassem o santuário e os santos,
And the king sent letters by the hands of messengers to Jerusalem, and to all the cities of Juda: that they should follow the law of the nations of the earth,
And should forbid holocausts and sacrifices, and atonements to be made in the temple of God.47 erigissem altares, templos e ídolos, sacrificassem porcos e animais imundos,
And should prohibit the sabbath, and the festival days, to be celebrated.48 deixassem seus filhos incircuncidados e maculassem suas almas com toda sorte de impurezas e abominações, de maneira
And he commanded the holy places to be profaned, and the holy people of Israel.49 a obrigarem-nos a esquecer a lei e a transgredir as prescrições.
And he commanded altars to be built, and temples, and idols, and swine's flesh to be immolated, and unclean beasts.50 Todo aquele que não obedecesse à ordem do rei seria morto.
And that they should leave their children uncircumcised, and let their souls be defiled with all uncleannesses, and abominations, to the end that they should forget the law, and should change all the justifications of God.51 Foi nesse teor que o rei escreveu a todo o seu reino; nomeou comissários para vigiarem o cumprimento de sua vontade pelo povo e coagirem as cidades de Judá, uma por uma, a sacrificar.
And that whosoever would not do according to the word of king Antiochus should be put to death.52 Houve muitos dentre o povo que colaboraram com eles e abandonaram a lei. Fizeram muito mal no país, e 53. constrangeram os israelitas a se refugiarem em asilos e refúgios ocultos.
According to all these words he wrote to his whole kingdom, and he appointed rulers over the people that should force them to do these things.
And they commanded the cities of Juda to sacrifice.54 No dia quinze do mês de Casleu, do ano cento e quarenta e cinco, edificaram a abominação da desolação por sobre o altar e construíram altares em todas as cidades circunvizinhas de Judá.
Then many of the people were gathered to them that had forsaken the law of the Lord: and they committed evils in the land:55 Ofereciam sacrifícios diante das portas das casas e nas praças públicas,
And they drove away the people of Israel into lurking holes, and into the secret places of fugitives.56 rasgavam e queimavam todos os livros da lei que achavam;
On the fifteenth day of the month Casleu, in the hundred and forty-fifth year, king Antiochus set up the abominable idol of desolation upon the altar of God, and they built altars throughout all the cities of Juda round about:57 em toda parte, todo aquele em poder do qual se achava um livro do testamento, ou todo aquele que mostrasse gosto pela lei, morreria por ordem do rei.
And they burnt incense, and sacrificed at the doors of the houses, and in the streets.58 Com esse poder que tinham, tratavam assim, cada mês, os judeus que eles encontravam nas cidades
And they cut in pieces, and burnt with fire the books of the law of God:59 e, no dia vinte e cinco do mês, sacrificavam no altar, que sobressaía ao altar do templo.
And every one with whom the books of the testament of the Lord were found, and whosoever observed the law of the Lord, they put to death, according to the edict of the king.60 As mulheres, que levavam seus filhos a circuncidar, eram mortas conforme a ordem do rei,
Thus by their power did they deal with the people of Israel, that were found in the cities month after month.61 com os filhos suspensos aos seus pescoços. Massacravam-se também seus próximos e os que tinham feito a circuncisão.
And on the five and twentieth day of the month they sacrificed upon the altar of the idol that was over against the altar of God.62 Numerosos foram os israelitas que tomaram a firme resolução de não comer nada que fosse impuro, e preferiram a morte antes que se manchar com alimentos;
Now the women that circumcised their children, were slain according to the commandment of king Antiochus.63 não quiseram violar a santa lei e foram trucidados.
And they hanged the children about their necks in all their houses: and those that had circumcised them, they put to death.64 Caiu assim sobre Israel uma imensa cólera.
And many of the people of Israel determined with themselves, that they would not eat unclean things: and they chose rather to die than to be defiled with unclean meats.
And they would not break the holy law of God, and they were put to death:
And there was very great wrath upon the people.
