1 Now the enemies of Juda and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple to the Lord the God of Israel.	1 Les adversaires de Juda et Benjamin apprirent que ceux qui étaient revenus de la captivité construisaient un Temple à Yahvé Dieu d’Israël.
2 And they came to Zorobabel, and the chief of the fathers, and said to them: Let us build with you, for we seek your God as ye do: behold we have sacrificed to him, since the days of Asor Haddan king of Assyria, who brought us hither.	2 Ils vinrent trouver Zorobabel et les chefs de familles et leur dirent: “Nous allons construire avec vous puisque, comme vous, nous invoquons votre Dieu et nous lui offrons des sacrifices depuis le temps d’Asarhaddon, roi d’Assyrie, qui nous a déportés ici.”
3 But Zorobabel, and Josue, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel said to them: You have nothing to do with us to build a house to our God, but we ourselves alone will build to the Lord our God, as Cyrus king of the Persians hath commanded us.	3 Zorobabel, Josué et le reste des chefs de familles d’Israël, leur répondirent: “Ce n’est pas à vous et à nous ensemble, de construire un Temple à notre Dieu. C’est nous, et nous seuls, qui construirons pour Yahvé Dieu d’Israël, comme nous l’a ordonné Cyrus roi de Perse!”
4 Then the people of the land hindered the hands of the people of Juda, and troubled them in building.	4 Le peuple du pays chercha alors à décourager le peuple de Juda et à le menacer pour l’empêcher de construire.
5 And they hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their design all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of the Persians.	5 Et pendant tout le temps de Cyrus, roi de Perse, jusqu’au règne de Darius roi de Perse, ils payèrent des conseillers pour faire échouer le projet du peuple de Juda.
6 And in the reign of Assuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Juda and Jerusalem.	6 Dès le commencement du règne de Xerxès, ils envoyèrent des lettres pour accuser les habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem.
7 And in the days of Artaxerxes, Beselam, Mithridates, and Thabeel, and the rest that were in the council wrote to Artaxerxes king of the Persians : and the letter of accusation was written in Syriac, and was read in the Syrian tongue.	7 Au temps d’Artaxerxès, Bichlam, Mithridate, Tabéel et le reste de leurs collègues, écrivirent à Artaxerxès roi de Perse pour les accuser à nouveau; le texte du document était écrit en araméen, mais on l’avait traduit.
8 Reum Beelteem, and Samsai the scribe wrote a letter from Jerusalem to king Artaxerxes, in this manner:	8 Ensuite Réhoum, gouverneur, et Chimchaï, secrétaire, écrivirent contre Jérusalem la lettre que voici destinée au roi Artaxerxès:
9 Reum Beelteem, and Samsai the scribe and the rest of their counsellors, the Dinites, and the Apharsathacites, the Therphalites, the Apharsites, the Erchuites, the Babylonians, the Susanechites, the Dievites, and the Elamites,	9 “Réhoum, le gouverneur en chef, Chimchaï, le secrétaire, et le reste de leurs collègues, les juges et les ambassadeurs, les fonctionnaires de Perse, les gens d’Ourouk, de Babylone et de Suse (c’est-à-dire les Élamites)
10 And the rest of the nations, whom the great and glorious Asenaphar brought over: and made to dwell in the cities of Samaria and in the rest of the countries of this side of the river in peace.	10 et les autres peuples que le grand et célèbre Assourbanipal a déportés et installés dans les villes de Samarie et de la province qui est au-delà de l’Euphrate, écrivent ceci.”
11 (This is the copy of the letter, which they sent to him:) To Artaxerxes the king, thy servants, the men that are on this side of the river, send greeting.	11 Voici donc la copie de la lettre qu’ils envoyèrent: “Au roi Artaxerxès, tes serviteurs, les hommes d’au-delà du Fleuve.
12 Be it known to the king, that the Jews, who came up from thee to us, are come to Jerusalem a rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, setting up the ramparts thereof and repairing the walls.	12 Le roi doit savoir que les Juifs qui sont revenus de chez toi vers nous, sont arrivés à Jérusalem. Ils reconstruisent cette ville rebelle et méchante, ils relèvent les remparts et réparent les fondations.
13 And now be it known to the king, that if this city be built up, and the walls thereof repaired, they will not pay tribute nor toll, nor yearly revenues, and this loss will fail upon the kings.	13 Le roi doit savoir ceci: s’ils arrivent à reconstruire la ville et que les remparts sont relevés, ils ne verseront plus de tributs, d’impôts ou de droits de passage; finalement, les rois en paieront les frais.
14 But we remembering the salt that we have eaten in the palace, and because we count it a crime to see the king wronged, have therefore sent and certified the king,	14 Comme nous mangeons le sel du palais royal, nous ne pouvons supporter de voir le tort qui sera fait au roi; c’est pourquoi nous envoyons ces informations au roi.
15 That search may be made in the books of the histories of thy fathers, and thou shalt find written in the records: and shalt know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to the kings and provinces, and that wars were raised therein of old time: for which cause also the city was destroyed.	15 On doit faire des recherches dans les livres où sont gardés les mémoires de tes pères. Là, dans le livre des mémoires, tu découvriras et tu apprendras que cette ville est rebelle et qu’elle a fait du tort aux rois et aux provinces, et que dans les temps anciens beaucoup de révoltes y sont nées; c’est pour cela que cette ville a été détruite.
16 We certify the king, that if this city be built, and the walls thereof repaired, thou shalt have no possession on this side of the river.	16 Nous faisons savoir au roi que si cette ville est reconstruite, si ses remparts sont relevés, tu n’auras plus de territoires au-delà du Fleuve.”
17 The king sent word to Reum Beelteem and Samsai the scribe, and to the rest that were in their council, inhabitants of Samaria, and to the rest beyond the river, sending greeting and peace.	17 Le roi envoya cette réponse: “À Réhoum, gouverneur, et Chimchaï, le secrétaire, au reste de leurs collègues qui habitent en Samarie et dans la région au-delà du Fleuve, salut!
18 The accusation, which you have sent to us, hath been plainly read before me,	18 La lettre que vous nous avez envoyée a été lue devant moi, point par point.
19 And I commanded: and search hath been made, and it is found, that this city of old time hath rebelled against kings, and seditions and wars have been raised therein.	19 Sur mon ordre on a fait des recherches et l’on a constaté ceci: depuis les temps anciens, cette ville s’est dressée contre les rois: on y a vu des troubles et des révoltes.
20 For there have been powerful kings in Jerusalem, who hare had dominion over all the country that is beyond the river: and have received tribute, and toll and revenues.	20 Des rois puissants ont régné à Jérusalem sur la province au-delà du Fleuve: on leur payait tribut, impôt et droit de passage.
21 Now therefore hear the sentence: Hinder those men, that this city be not built, till further orders be given by me.	21 Aussi, donnez l’ordre d’arrêter le travail de ces gens: cette ville ne doit pas être reconstruite jusqu’à nouvel ordre de ma part.
22 See that you be not negligent in executing this, lest by little and little the evil grow to the hurt of the kings.	22 Ne négligez rien dans cette affaire, de peur que le mal n’aille en grandissant, au détriment des rois.”
23 Now the copy of the edict of king Artaxerxes was read before Reum Beelteem, and Samsai the scribe, and their counsellors: and they went up in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and hindered them with arm and power.	23 On fit la lecture de la copie de la lettre du roi Artaxerxès devant Réhoum, le secrétaire Chimchaï et leurs collègues. Aussitôt la lecture terminée, ils partirent pour Jérusalem et obligèrent les Juifs par la violence et par la force, à cesser leurs travaux.
24 Then the work of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem was interrupted, and ceased till the second year of the reign of Darius king of the Persians.	24 Alors le travail du Temple de Dieu à Jérusalem s’arrêta et il demeura dans cet état jusqu’à la deuxième année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse.
