DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Now these are they that came to David to Siceleg, while he yet fled from Saul the son of Cia, and they were most valiant and excellent warriors,1 The following men came to David in Ziklag while he was still under banishment from Saul, son of Kish; they, too, were among the warriors who helped him in his battles.
Bending the bow, and using either hand in hurling stones with slings, and shooting arrows: of the brethren of Saul of Benjamin.2 They were archers who could use either the right or the left hand, both in slinging stones and in shooting arrows with the bow. They were some of Saul's kinsmen, from Benjamin.
The chief was Ahiezer, and Joas, the sons of Samaa of Gabaath, and Jaziel, and Phallet the sons of Azmoth, and Beracha, and Jehu an Anathothite.3 Ahiezer was their chief, along with Joash, both sons of Shemaah of Gibeah; also Jeziel and Pelet, sons of Azmaveth; Beracah; Jehu, from Anathoth;
And Samaias of Gabaon, the stoutest amongst the thirty and over the thirty; Jeremias, and Jeheziel, and Johanan, and Jezabad of Gaderoth;4 Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a warrior on the level of the Thirty, and in addition to their number;
And Eluzai, and Jerimuth, and Baalia, and Samaria, and Saphatia the Haruphite;5 Jeremiah; Jahaziel; Johanan; Jozabad from Gederah;
Elcana, and Jesia, and Azareel, and Joezer, and Jesbaam of Carehim:6 Eluzai; Jerimoth; Bealiah; Shemariah; Shephatiah the Haruphite;
And Joela, and Zabadia the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.7 Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Ishbaal, who were Korahites;
From Gaddi also there went over to David, when he lay hid in the wilderness most valiant men, and excellent warriors, holding shield and spear: whose faces were like the faces of a lion, and they were swift like the roebucks on the mountains.8 Joelah, finally, and Zebadiah, sons of Jeroham, from Gedor.
Ezer the chief, Obdias the second, Eliab the third,9 Some of the Gadites also went over to David when he was at the stronghold in the wilderness. They were valiant warriors, experienced soldiers equipped with shield and spear, who bore themselves like lions, and were as swift as the gazelles on the mountains.
Masmana the fourth, Jeremias the fifth.10 Ezer was their chief, Obadiah was second, Eliab third,
Ethi the sixth, Eliel the seventh,11 Mishmannah fourth, Jeremiah fifth,
Johanan the eighth, Elzebad the ninth,12 Attai sixth, Eliel seventh,
Jerenias the tenth, Machbani the eleventh,13 Johanan eighth, Elzabad ninth,
These were of the sons of Gad, captains of the army: the least of them was captain over a hundred soldiers, and the greatest over a thousand.14 Jeremiah tenth, and Machbannai eleventh.
These are they who passed over the Jordan in the first month, when it is used to how over its banks: and they put to flight all that dwelt in the valleys both toward the east and toward the west.15 These Gadites were army commanders, the lesser placed over hundreds and the greater over thousands.
And there came also of the men of Benjamin, and of Juda to the hold, in which David abode.16 It was they who crossed over the Jordan when it was overflowing both its banks in the first month, and dispersed all who were in the valleys to the east and to the west.
And David went out to meet them, and said: If you are come peaceably to me to help me, let my heart be joined to you: but if you plot against me for my enemies whereas I have no iniquity in my hands, let the God of our fathers see, and judge.17 Some Benjaminites and Judahites also came to David at the stronghold.
But the spirit came upon Amasai the chief among thirty, and he said: We are thine, O David, and for thee, O son of Isai: peace, peace be to thee, and peace to thy helpers. For thy God helpeth thee. So David received them, and made them captains of the band.18 David went out to meet them and addressed them in these words: "If you come peacefully, to help me, I am of a mind to have you join me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies though my hands have done no wrong, may the God of our fathers see and punish you."
And there were some of Manasses that went over to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to fight: but he did not fight with them: because the lords of the Philistines taking counsel sent him back, saying: With the danger of our heads he will return to his master Saul.19 Then spirit enveloped Amasai, the chief of the Thirty, who spoke: "We are yours, O David, we are with you, O son of Jesse. Peace, peace to you, and peace to him who helps you; your God it is who helps you." So David received them and placed them among the leaders of his troops.
So when he went back to Siceleg, m there fled to him of Manasses, Ednas and Jozabad, and Jedihel, and Michael, and Ednas, and Jozabad, and Eliu, and Salathi, captains of thousands in Manasses.20 Men from Manasseh also deserted to David when he came with the Philistines to battle against Saul. However, he did not help the Philistines, for their lords took counsel and sent him home, saying, "At the cost of our heads he will desert to his master Saul."
These helped David against the rovers: for they were all most valiant men, and were made commanders in the army.21 As he was returning to Ziklag, therefore, these deserted to him from Manasseh: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs of thousands of Manasseh.
Moreover day by day there came some to David to help him till they became a great number, like the army of God.22 They helped David by taking charge of his troops, for they were all warriors and became commanders of his army.
And this is the number of the chiefs of the army who came to David, when he was in Hebron, to transfer to him the kingdom of Saul, according to the word of the Lord.23 And from day to day men kept coming to David's help until there was a vast encampment, like an encampment of angels.
The sons of Juda bearing shield and spear, six thousand eight hundred well appointed to war.24 This is the muster of the detachments of armed troops that came to David at Hebron to transfer to him Saul's kingdom, as the LORD had ordained.
Of the sons of Simeon valiant men for war, seven thousand one hundred.25 Judahites bearing shields and spears: six thousand eight hundred armed troops.
Of the sons of Levi, four thousand six hundred.26 Of the Simeonites, warriors fit for battle: seven thousand one hundred.
And Joiada prince of the race of Aaron, and with him three thousand seven hundred.27 Of the Levites: four thousand six hundred,
Sadoc also a young man of excellent disposition, and the house of his father, twenty-two principal men.28 along with Jehoiada, leader of the line of Aaron, with another three thousand seven hundred,
And of the sons of Benjamin the brethren of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto a great part of them followed the house of Saul.29 and Zadok, a young warrior, with twenty-two princes of his father's house.
And of the sons of Ephraim twenty thousand eight hundred, men of great valour renowned in their kindreds.30 Of the Benjaminites, the brethren of Saul: three thousand--until this time, most of them had held their allegiance to the house of Saul.
And of the half tribe of Manasses, eighteen thousand, every one by their names, came to make David king.31 Of the Ephraimites: twenty thousand eight hundred warriors, men renowned in their ancestral houses.
Also of the sons of Issachar men of understanding, that knew all times to order what Israel should do, two hundred principal men: and all the rest of the tribe followed their counsel.32 Of the half-tribe of Manasseh: eighteen thousand, designated by name to come and make David king.
And of Zabulon such as went forth to battle, and stood in array well appointed with armour for war, there came fifty thousand to his aid, with no double heart.33 Of the Issacharites, their chiefs who were endowed with an understanding of the times and who knew what Israel had to do: two hundred chiefs, together with all their brethren under their command.
And of Nephtali, a thousand leaders: and with them seven and thirty thousand, furnished with shield and spear.34 From Zebulun, men fit for military service, set in battle array with every kind of weapon for war: fifty thousand men rallying with a single purpose.
Of Dan also twenty-eight thousand six hundred prepared for battle.35 From Naphtali: one thousand captains, and with them, armed with shield and lance, thirty-seven thousand men.
And of Aser forty thousand going forth to fight, and challenging in battle.36 Of the Danites, set in battle array: twenty-eight thousand six hundred.
And on the other side of the Jordan of the sons of Ruben, and of Gad, and of the half of the tribe of Manasses a hundred and twenty thousand, furnished with arms for war.37 From Asher, fit for military service and set in battle array: forty thousand.
All these men of war well appointed to fight, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel, were of one heart to make David king.38 From the other side of the Jordan, of the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, men equipped with every kind of weapon of war: one hundred and twenty thousand.
And they were there with David three days eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them.39 All these soldiers, drawn up in battle order, came to Hebron with the resolute intention of making David king over all Israel. The rest of Israel was likewise of one mind to make David king.
Moreover they that were near them even as far as Issachar, and Zabulon, and Nephtali, brought leaves on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, to eat: meal, figs, raisins, wine, oil, and oxen, and sheep in abundance, for there was joy in Israel.40 They remained with David for three days, feasting and drinking, for their brethren had prepared for them.
Moreover, their neighbors from as far as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali came bringing food on asses, camels, mules, and oxen--provisions in great quantity of meal, pressed figs, raisins, wine, oil, oxen, and sheep. For there was rejoicing in Israel.
