DOUAI-RHEIMSBIBLES DES PEUPLES
Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down wounded in mount Gelboe.1 Les Philistins firent la guerre à Israël, les Israélites s’enfuirent devant les Philistins et tombèrent frappés à mort sur le mont Guelboé.
And the Philistines drew near pursuing after Saul, and his sons, and they killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchisua the sons of Saul.2 Les Philistins serraient de près Saül et ses fils: ils tuèrent Jonathan, Aminadab et Malki-Choua, fils de Saül.
And the battle grew hard against Saul, and the archers reached him, and wounded him with arrows.3 La bataille se reporta sur Saül; des archers le découvrirent et se voyant face à eux, il fut pris de panique.
And Saul said to his armourbearer: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest these uncircumcised come, and mock me. But his armourbearer would not, for he was struck with fear: so Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.4 Saül dit alors à son écuyer: “Dégaine ton épée et transperce-moi. Il ne faut pas que ces incirconcis arrivent sur moi et se jouent de moi.” Mais son écuyer ne voulut pas: il avait peur. Saül prit donc son épée et se jeta sur elle.
And when his armourbearer saw it, to wit, that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died.5 Lorsque son écuyer vit qu’il était mort, il se jeta lui aussi sur son épée et mourut avec lui.
So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house fell together.6 C’est ainsi que ce jour-là, Saül, ses trois fils et toute sa maison moururent ensemble.
And when the men of Israel, that dwelt in the plains, saw this, they fled: and Saul and his sons being dead, they forsook their cities, and were scattered up and down: and the Philistines came, and dwelt in them.7 Apprenant la défaite, la mort de Saül et de ses fils, les Israélites qui habitaient la vallée abandonnèrent leurs villes et prirent la fuite. Les Philistins arrivèrent et s’établirent à leur place.
And the next day the Philistines taking away the spoils of them that were slain, found Saul and his sons lying on mount Gelboe.8 Le lendemain, les Philistins venus pour dépouiller les morts trouvèrent Saül et ses fils gisant sur le mont Guelboé.
And when they had stripped him, and cut off his head, and taken away his armour, they sent it into their land, to be carried about, and shewn in the temples of the idols and to the people.9 Ils le dépouillèrent et emportèrent sa tête et ses armes, puis ils firent porter cette bonne nouvelle dans tout le pays des Philistins, à leurs idoles et à toute la populace.
And his armour they dedicated in the temple of their god, and his head they fastened up in the temple of Dagon.10 Ils mirent ses armes dans le temple de leurs dieux et suspendirent sa tête dans le temple de Dagon.
And when the men of Jabes Galaad had heard this, to wit, all that the Philistines had done to Saul,11 Lorsque les habitants de Yabech de Galaad apprirent comment les Philistins avaient traité Saül,
All the valiant men of them arose, and took the bodies of Saul and of his sons, and brought them to Jabes, and buried their bones under the oak that was in Jabes, and they fasted seven days.12 tous les braves parmi eux se mirent en route; ils emportèrent les corps de Saül et de ses fils et les ramenèrent à Yabech. Ils enterrèrent leurs ossements sous le térébinthe et jeûnèrent durant sept jours.
So Saul died for his iniquities, because he transgressed the commandment of the Lord, which he had commanded, and kept it not: and moreover consulted also a witch,13 C’est ainsi que mourut Saül: il avait été infidèle envers Yahvé, il n’avait pas observé sa parole, il s’était même rendu chez une nécromancienne pour la consulter.
And trusted not is the Lord: therefore he slew him, and transferred his kingdom to David the son of Isai.14 Mais il n’avait pas consulté Yahvé: Yahvé le fit mourir et donna sa royauté à David, fils de Jessé.
