1 Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: David prospering and growing always stronger and stronger, but the house of Saul decaying daily.	1 - A lungo durò la lotta tra la casa di Saul e quella di Davide, ma Davide progrediva e si faceva sempre più forte, mentre la casa di Saul andava di giorno in giorno, indebolendo.
2 And sons were born to David in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon of Achinoam the Jezrahelitess:	2 Nacquero a Davide in Ebron dei figliuoli. Il primogenito Amnon figlio di Achinoam di Jezrael;
3 And his second Cheleab of Abigail the wife of Nabal of Carmel: and the third Absalom the son of Maacha the daughter of Tholmai king of Gessur:	3 il secondo Cheleab figlio di Abigail già moglie di Nabal di Carmelo; il terzo Absalom figliuolo di Maaca figlia di Tolmai re di Gessur;
4 And the fourth Adonias, the son of Haggith: and the fifth Saphathia the son of Abital:	4 il quarto Adonia figlio di Aggit; il quinto Safatia figlio di Abital;
5 And the sixth Jethraam of Egla the wife of David: these were born to David in Hebron.	5 il sesto Jetraam figlio di Egla moglie di Davide: tutti costoro nacquero a Davide in Ebron.
6 Now while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner the son of Ner ruled the house of Saul.	6 Durante la guerra tra la casa di Saul e quella di Davide, Abner figlio di Ner aveva la reggenza della casa di Saul.
7 And Saul had a concubine named Respha, the daughter of Aia. And Isboseth said to Abner:	7 Saul aveva avuto una concubina chiamata Resfa figlia di Aia. E Isboset disse ad Abner:
8 Why didst thou go in to my father's concubine? And he was exceedingly angry for the words of Isboseth, and said: Am I a dog's head against Juda this day, who have shewn mercy to the house of Saul thy father, and to his brethren and friends, and have not delivered thee into the hands of David, and hast thou sought this day against me to charge me with a matter concerning a woman?	8 «Perchè sei tu entrato dalla concubina del padre mio?». Abner s'irritò grandemente alle parole di Isboset e rispose: «Sono io oggi una testa di cane, io che oggi sono avversario di Giuda, io che ho usato misericordia alla casa di Saul, tuo padre, e ai fratelli e ai prossimi tuoi e non ti ho dato in mano di Davide? E tu oggi hai cercato in me di che rimproverarmi per una donna?
9 So do God to Abner, and more also, unless as the Lord hath sworn to David, so I do to him,	9 Che Dio faccia questo ad Abner e gli aggiunga quello, se io non agirò con Davide conformemente a quanto Dio gli giurò,
10 That the kingdom be translated from the house of Saul, and the throne of David be set up over Israel, and over Juda from Dan to Bersabee.	10 di trasferire cioè il regno dalla casa di Saul e di elevare il trono di Davide sopra Israele e sopra Giuda, da Dan fino a Bersabee».
11 And he could not answer him a word, because he feared him.	11 E Isboset non potè replicargli una sola parola, perchè aveva paura di lui.
12 Abner therefore sent messengers to David for himself, saying: Whose is the land? and that they should say: Make a league with me, and my hand shall be with thee: and I will bring all Israel to thee.	12 Abner inviò adunque messaggeri a Davide perchè da parte sua gli dicessero: «Di chi è la terra?», e aggiungessero: «Fa' alleanza con me e la mia mano sarà teco e ridurrò sotto di te tutto Israele».
13 And he said: Very well: I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, saying: Thou shalt not see my face before thou bring Michol the daughter of Saul: and so thou shalt come, and see me.	13 Davide rispose: «Benissimo; io farò teco alleanza, ma ti chiedo una sola cosa e dico che tu non vedrai la mia faccia prima che io mi sia ricondotta Micol figlia di Saul: solo allora verrai e mi vedrai».
14 And David sent messengers to Isboseth the son of Saul, saying: Restore my wife Michol, whom I espoused to me for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.	14 Mandò poi Davide messaggeri ad Isboset figlio di Saul per dirgli: «Rendimi mia moglie Micol, che io ho sposato a prezzo di cento prepuzii di Filistei».
15 And Isboseth sent, and took her from her husband Phaltiel, the son of Lais.	15 Isboset allora mandò a prenderla al marito di lei, Faltiel figlio di Lais.
16 And her husband followed her, weeping as far as Bahurim: and Abner said to him: Go and return. And he returned.	16 E il marito la seguì piangendo fino a Baurim; colà Abner gli disse: «Vattene indietro», ed egli se ne tornò.
17 Abner also spoke to the ancients of Israel, saying: Both yesterday and the day before you sought for David that he might reign over you.	17 Abner era intanto entrato in trattative cogli anziani d'Israele, dicendo: «Già da lungo tempo voi cercavate Davide perchè regnasse sopra di voi;
18 Now then do it: because the Lord hath spoken to David, saying: By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel from the hands of the Philistines, and of all their enemies.	18 decidetevi adunque, perchè il Signore ha parlato a Davide in questo modo: - Io libererò il popolo d'Israele dalla mano dei Filistei e da quella di tutti i suoi nemici per mezzo del mio servo Davide -».
19 And Abner spoke also to Benjamin. And he went to speak to David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and to all Benjamin.	19 Parlò ancora Abner con quei di Beniamino. Poi andò a riferire a Davide in Ebron tutto ciò che avevano deciso Israele e tutta la casa di Beniamino.
20 And he came to David in Hebron with twenty men: and David made a feast for Abner, and his men that came with him.	20 Egli era venuto a Davide in Ebron accompagnato da venti uomini e Davide fece un banchetto ad Abner e a quelli che lo accompagnavano.
21 And Abner said to David: I will rise, that I may gather all Israel unto thee my lord the king, and may enter into a league with thee, and that thou mayst reign over all as thy soul desireth. Now when David bad brought Abner on his way, and he was gone in peace,	21 Poi Abner disse a Davide: «Io mi leverò e andrò a riunire tutto Israele sotto il mio signore e re, e farò teco un patto e tu regnerai sopra tutti, come è nei tuoi desiderii». Davide congedò Abner che se ne andò in pace.
22 Immediately David's servants and Joab came, after having slain the robbers, with an exceeding great booty: and Abner, was not with David in Hebron, for he had now sent him away, and he was gone in peace.	22 Or ecco Joab e la gente di Davide, carichi di grande bottino, ritornarsene dall'aver debellato dei predoni. Abner non era più in Ebron con Davide, essendosi quegli congedato e partito in pace,
23 And Joab and all the army that was with him, came afterwards: and it was told Joab, that Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.	23 mentre Joab e tutto il suo esercito erano arrivati dopo. Fu pertanto portata la notizia a Joab da alcuni, che gli dissero: «Abner figliuolo di Ner è venuto dal re, il quale lo ha congedato ed egli se n'è andato in pace».
24 And Joab went in to the king, and said: What hast thou done? Behold Abner came to thee: Why didst thou send him away, and he is gone and departed?	24 Joab allora si portò da re e gli disse: «Che cosa hai fatto? Ecco, Abner è venuto a te; perchè tu l'hai lasciato partire in modo che egli se ne è andato e allontanato?
25 Knowest thou not Abner the son of Ner, that to this end he came to thee, that he might deceive thee, and to know thy going out, and thy coming in, and to know all thou dost?	25 Non sai tu che Abner figliuolo di Ner è venuto per ingannarti e spiare tutti i tuoi movimenti e per sapere tutto ciò che fai?».
26 Then Joab going out from David, sent messengers after Abner, and brought him back from the cistern of Sira, David knowing nothing of it.	26 Uscito quindi Joab dal cospetto di Davide, mandò dietro ad Abner alcuni messaggeri e, all'insaputa di Davide, lo fece ritornare dalla cisterna di Sira.
27 And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside to the middle of the gate, to speak to him treacherously: and he stabbed him there in the groin, and he died, in revenge of the blood of Asael his brother.	27 Ritornato Abner in Ebron, Joab lo trasse in disparte in mezzo alla porta, fingendo di parlargli, e qui gli diede un colpo all'inguine e l'uccise per far vendetta del sangue di Asael suo fratello.
28 And when David heard of it, after the thing was now done, he said: I, and my kingdom are innocent before the Lord for ever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner:	28 Come Davide intese l'accaduto disse: «Innanzi al Signore io e il mio regno siamo in perpetuo innocenti del sangue di Abner figliuolo di Ner;
29 And may it come upon the head of Joab, and upon all his father's house: and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue of seed, or that is a leper, or that holdeth the distaff, or that falleth by the sword, or that wanteth bread.	29 scenda [esso] sul capo di Joab e sopra tutta la casa del padre di lui, nè manchi mai nella casa di Joab chi soffra di gonorrea e di lebbra e tenga il fuso, e muoia di spada, e manchi di pane».
30 So Joab and Abisai his brother slew Abner, because he had killed their brother Asael at Gabaon in the battle.	30 Joab e Abisai suo fratello uccisero adunque Abner perchè egli aveva ammazzato Asael loro fratello a Gabaon in combattimento.
31 And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him: Rend your garments, and gird yourselves with sackcloths, and mourn before the funeral of Abner. And king David himself followed the bier.	31 Davide poi disse a Joab e a tutto il popolo che stava con lui: «Stracciatevi le vesti, cingetevi di sacco e piangete pei funerali di Abner». Lo stesso re Davide accompagnò il feretro
32 And when they had buried Abner in Hebron, king David lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner: and all the people also wept.	32 e mentre si seppelliva Abner in Ebron Davide levò la sua voce e pianse sul sepolcro di Abner: pianse anche tutto il popolo,
33 And the king mourning and lamenting over Abner, said: Not as cowards are wont to die, hath Abner died.	33 e il re lamentandosi e piangendo Abner, disse: «No, non come sogliono morire i vili, è morto Abner.
34 Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet laden with fetters: but as men fall before the children of iniquity, so didst thou fall. And all the people repeating it wept over him.	34 Le tue mani non sono state legatenè i tuoi piedi stretti nei ceppi; ma tu sei caduto come si suol caderedinanzi ai figli d'iniquità.» E tutto il popolo gemendo pianse sopra di lui.
35 And when all the people came to take meat with David, while it was yet broad day, David swore, saying: So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread or any thing else before sunset.	35 Come tutta la moltitudine venne per mangiare insieme con Davide, essendo ancora giorno chiaro, Davide giurò, dicendo: «Iddio mi faccia questo e mi aggiunga quello se prima del tramonto del sole, io gusterò pane o qualsiasi altra cosa».
36 And all the people heard, and they were pleased, and all that the king did seemed good in the sight of all the people.	36 Il popolo udì e si compiacque di tutto ciò che aveva fatto il re al cospetto di tutto il popolo;
37 And all the people, and all Israel understood that day that it was not the king's doing, that Abner the son of Ner was slain.	37 e tutta la moltitudine e l'intero Israele conobbe in quel giorno che Abner figlio di Ner non era stato ucciso per istigazione del re.
38 The king also said to his servants: Do you not know that a prince and great man is slain this day in Israel?	38 Il re poi disse ai suoi servi: «Non sapete voi che un principe e uno dei migliori è caduto oggi in Israele?
39 But I as yet am tender, though anointed king. And these men the sons of Sarvia are too hard for me: the Lord reward him that doth evil according to his wickedness.	39 Io quantunque unto re sono ancora debole; ma questi uomini figliuoli di Sarvia, son duri contro di me. Che il Signore renda a chi fa il male conforme alla sua malizia».
