1 And the anger of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and stirred up David among them, saying: Go, number Israel and Juda.	1 Il furore del Signore s'accese di nuovo contro Israele, ed eccitò David contro di essi, dicendo: «Va a fare il censimento d'Israele e di Giuda ».
2 And the king said to Joab the general of his army: Go through all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Bersabee, and number ye the people that I may know the number of them.	2 Allora il re disse a Gioab capo del suo esercito: « Percorri tutte le tribù d'Israele da Dan fino a Bersabee, e fate il censimento del popolo, ond'io ne sappia il numero ».
3 And Joab said to the king: The Lord thy God increase thy people, and make them as many more as they are now, and again multiply them a hundredfold in the sight of my lord the king: but what meaneth my lord the king by this kind of thing?	3 Gioab rispose al re: « Il Signore Dio tuo moltiplichi il tuo popolo oltre quello che è attualmente, e di nuovo lo moltiplichi per cento nel cospetto del re mio signore; ma che vorrebbe fare il re mio signore con questo? »
4 But the king's words prevailed over the words of Joab, and of the captains of the army: and Joab, and the captains of the soldiers went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.	4 Ma la parola del re prevalse sulle parole di Gioab e dei capi dell'esefcito, e Gioab e i principi dei soldati partirono dalla presenza del re per fare il censimento del popolo d'Israele.
5 And when they had passed the Jordan, they came to Aroer to the right side of the city, which is in the vale of Gad.	5 Passato il Giordano, andarono ad Aroer, alla destra della città che è nella valle di Gad;
6 And by Jazer they passed into Galaad, and to the lower land of Hodsi, and they came into the woodlands of Dan. And going about by Sidon,	6 poi per Iazer passarono in Galaad e nel paese inferiore di Odsi, e giunsero nelle foreste di Dan. Giraron poi nei dintorni di Sidone,
7 They passed near the walls of Tyre, and all the land of the Hevite, and the Chanaanite, and they came to the south of Juda into Bersabee:	7 passarono presso le mura di Tiro, per tutto il paese dell'Eveo e del Cananeo e arrivarono nella parte meridionale di Giuda in Bersabee.
8 And having gone through the whole land, after nine months and twenty days, they came to Jerusalem.	8 Avendo così scorso tutto il paese, tornarono a Gerusalemme dopo nove mesi e venti giorni.
9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people to the king, and there were found of Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword: and of Juda five hundred thousand fighting men.	9 Gioab consegnò al re il censimento del popolo che dava d'Israele ottocento mila uomini forti che potevano maneggiar la spada, e di Giuda cinquecento mila combattenti.
10 But David's heart struck him, after the people were numbered: and David said to the Lord: I have sinned very much in what I have done: but I pray thee, O Lord, to take away the iniquity of thy servant, because I have done exceeding foolishly.	10 Ma David sentì battere il cuore appena fatto il censimento del popolo, e disse al Signore: « Ho molto peccato facendo questo; ma ti prego, o Signore, di togliere l'iniquità del tuo servo, perchè io ho agito con troppa stoltezza ».
11 And David arose in the morning, and the word of the Lord came to Gad the prophet and the seer of David, saying:	11 Il giorno dopo, quando David si levò la mattina, il Signore parlò a Gad profeta e veggente di David, dicendo:
12 Go, and say to David: Thus saith the Lord: I give thee thy choice of three things, choose one of them which thou wilt, that I may do it to thee.	12 « Va a dire a David: Queste cose dice il Signore: Ti è dato di scegliere fra queste tre cose, scegline una, quella che ti pare, ed io te la farò ».
13 And when Gad was come to David, he told him, saying: Either seven years of famine shall come to thee in thy land: or thou shalt flee three months before thy adversaries, and they shall pursue thee: or for three days there shall be a pestilence in thy land. Now therefore deliberate, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.	13 Gad si presentò a David e gli riferì la cosa, dicendo: « O deve venire per sette anni la fame nel tuo paese, o per tre mesi tu dovrai fuggire i tuoi nemici che ti inseguiranno, o vi dovrà essere una peste di tre giorni nel tuo regno: or dunque delibera e fammi sapere che devo rispondere a colui che m'ha mandato ».
14 And David said to Gad: I am in a great strait: but it is better that I should fall into the hands of the Lord (for his mercies are many) than into the hands of men.	14 David rispose a Gad: « La mia angoscia è grande; ma è meglio cadere nelle mani del Signore, di cui sono grandi le misericordie, che nelle mani degli uomini ».
15 And the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel, from the morning unto the time appointed, and there died of the people from Dan to Bersabee seventy thousand men.	15 Il Signore mandò in Israele la peste da quella mattina fino al tempo stabilito, e del popolo, da Dan fino a Bersabee, ne morirono settanta mila persone.
16 And when the angel of the Lord had stretched out his hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord had pity on the affliction, and said to the angel that slew the people: It is enough: now hold thy hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the thrashingfloor of Areuna the Jebusite.	16 Quando l'angelo del Signore stese la mano sopra Gerusalemme per desolarla, il Signore si mosse a pietà per tanta sciagura, e disse all'angelo che percoteva il popolo: « Basta! Ora ferma la tua mano ». L'angelo del Signore era presso l'aia di Areuna Gebuseo.
17 And David said to the Lord, when he saw the angel striking the people: It is I; I am he that have sinned, I have done wickedly: these that are the sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I beseech thee, be turned against me, and against my father's house.	17 Quando ebbe veduto l'Angelo che percoteva il popolo, David disse al Signore: « Son io che ho peccato, io che ho agito iniquamente: ma questi, che son le pecore, che han fatto? Si rivolga, ti prego, la tua mano contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre ».
18 And Gad came to David that day, and said: Go up, and build an altar to the Lord in the thrashingfloor of Areuna the Jebusite.	18 In quel giorno Gad andò David e gli disse: « Sali ed erigi un altare al Signore nell'aia di Areuna Gebuseo ».
19 And David went up according to the word of Gad which the Lord had commanded him.	19 David salì secondo la parola di Gad, e l'ordine del Signore.
20 And Areuna looked, and saw the king and his servants coming towards him:	20 Areuna, avendo alzati gli occhi, visto venire da lui il re e i suoi servi,
21 An going out he worshipped the king, bowing with his face to the earth, and said: Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? Arid David said to him: To buy the thrashingfloor of thee, and build an altar to the Lord, that the plague, which rageth among the people, may cease.	21 uscito fuori, adorò il re, prostrandosi col volto a terra, e disse: « Perchè mai il re mio signore viene alla casa del suo servo? » David gli disse: « Per comprar la tua aia ed erigervi un altare al Signore, affinchè cessi la mortalità che infierisce nel popolo ».
22 And Areuna said to David: Let my lord the king take, and offer, as it seemeth good to him: thou hast here oxen for a holocaust, and the wain, and the yokes of the oxen for wood.	22 Areuna rispose a David: « Il re mio signore prenda e offerisca come a lui piace: ecco i buoi per l'olocausto, il carro ed i gioghi dei buoi per il legno:
23 All these things Areuna as a king gave to the king: and Areuna said to the king: The Lord thy God receive thy vow.	23 tutto, o re, dona Areuna al re ». Poi Areuna aggiunse: « Il Signore Dio tuo gradisca il tuo voto ».
24 And the king answered him, and said: Nay, but I will buy it of thee at a price, and I will not offer to the Lord my God holocausts free cost. So David bought the floor, and the oxen, for fifty sicles of silver:	24 Ma il re rispose e disse: « Non sarà come vorresti tu; no, io vo' comprare da te a contanti, e non voglio offrire al Signore Dio mio olocausti datimi in dono ». David comprò l'aia ed i buoi per cinquanta sicli d'argento.
25 And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered holocausts and peace offerings: and the Lord became merciful to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.	25 Poi David eresse in quel luogo un altare al Signore, e offerse olocausti e ostie pacifiche. Così il Signore tornò propizio alla terra e il flagello cessò in Israele.
