DOUAI-RHEIMSBIBLIA
And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanon his son reigned in his stead.1 Después de esto murió el rey de los ammonitas y reinó en su lugar su hijo Janún.
And David said: I Will shew kindness to Hanon the son of Daas, as his father shewed kindness to me. So David sent his servants to comfort him for the death of his father. But when the servants of David were come into the land of the children of Ammon,2 Dijo David: «Tendré con Janún, hijo de Najás, la misma benevolencia que su padre tuvo conmigo». David envió a sus servidores para que le consolaran por su padre. Cuando los servidores de David llegaron al país de los ammonitas,
The princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanon their lord: Thinkest thou that for the honour of thy father, David hath sent comforters to thee, and hath not David rather sent his servants to thee to search, and spy into the city, and overthrow it?3 dijeron los jefes de los ammonitas a Janún, su señor: «¿Acaso David te envía a consolar porque quiere hacer honor a tu padre ante tus ojos? ¿No te ha enviado David sus siervos para espiar la ciudad, explorarla y destruirla?»
Wherefore Hanon took the servants of David, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut away half of their garments even to the buttocks, and sent them away.4 Entonces Janún prendió a los servidores de David, les rapó la mitad de la barba, cortó sus vestidos hasta la mitad de las nalgas, y los despachó.
When this was told David, he sent to meet them: for the men were sadly put to confusion, and David commanded them, saying: Stay at Jericho, till your beards be grown, and then return.5 Se lo comunicaron a David y envió gente a su encuentro porque los hombres estaban cubiertos de vergüenza; el rey les mandó a decir: «Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os crezca la barba; después volveréis».
And the children of Ammon seeing that they had done an injury to David, Bent and hired the Syrians of Rohob, and the Syrians of Soba, twenty thousand footmen, and of the king of Maacha a thousand men, and of Istob twelve thousand men.6 Vieron los ammonitas que se habían hecho odiosos a David y enviaron para tomar a sueldo arameos de Bet Rejob y arameos de Sobá 20.000 infantes; del rey de Maaká mil hombres y del rey de Tob 12.000.
And when David heard this, he sent Joab and the whole army of warriors.7 Lo supo David y mandó a Joab con toda la tropa, los valientes.
And the children of Ammon came out, and set their men in array at the entering in of the gate: but the Syrians of Soba, and of Rohob, and of Istob, and of Maacha were by themselves in the field.8 Salieron a campaña los ammonitas y se ordenaron en batalla a la entrada de la puerta, mientras que los arameos de Sobá y de Rejob, y los hombres de Tob y de Maaká estaban aparte en el campo.
Then Joab seeing that the battle was prepared against him, both before and behind, chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:9 Viendo Joab que tenía un frente de combate por delante y otro por detrás, escogió a los mejores de Israel y los puso en línea contra los arameos.
And the rest of the people he delivered to Abisai his brother, who set them in array against the children of Ammon.10 Puso el resto del ejército al mando de su hermano Abisay y lo ordenó en batalla frente a los ammonitas.
And Joab said: If the Syrians are too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon are too strong for thee, then I will help thee.11 Y dijo: «Si los arameos me dominan, ven en mi ayuda; si los ammonitas te dominan a ti, vendré en tu socorro.
Be of good courage, and let us fight for our people, and for the city of our God: and the Lord will do what is good in his sight.12 Ten fortaleza, esforcémonos por nuestr pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios y que Yahveh haga lo que bien le parezca».
And Joab and the people that were with him, began to fight against the Syrians: and they immediately fled before him.13 Y avanzó Joab con su ejército para luchar contra los arameos, que huyeron ante él.
And the children of Ammon seeing that the Syrians were fled, they fled also before Abisai, and entered into the city: and Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.14 Viendo los ammonitas que los arameos emprendían la fuga, huyeron también ellos ante Abisay y entraron en la ciudad, mientras que Joab se alejó de los ammonitas y entró en Jerusalén.
Then the Syrians seeing that they had fallen before Israel, gathered themselves together.15 Vieron los arameos que habían sido vencidos por Israel y se concentraron todos.
And Adarezer sent and fetched the Syrians, that were beyond the river, and brought over their army: and Sobach, the captain of the host of Adarezer, was their general.16 Hadadézer mandó venir a los arameos del otro lado del Río. Y llegaron a Jelam, viniendo a su cabeza Sobak, jefe del ejército de Hadadézer.
And when this was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam: and the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought against him.17 Se dio aviso a David, quien reuniendo a todo Israel pasó el Jordán y llegó a Jelam; los arameos se ordenaron en batalla frente a David y combatieron contra él.
And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen: and smote Sobach the captain of the army, who presently died.18 Huyeron los arameos ante Israel y David abatió a los arameos setecientos carros y 40.000 de carro. Hirió también a Sobak, jefe de su ejército, que murió allí mismo.
And all the kings that were auxiliaries of Adarezer, seeing themselves overcome by Israel, were afraid and fled away, eight and fifty thousand men before Israel. And they made peace with Israel: and served them, and all the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.19 Cuando todos les reyes vasallos de Hadadézer vieron que habían sido batidos ante Israel, hicieron la paz con Israel y le quedaron sometidos. Los arameos no se atrevieron a seguir ayudando a los ammonitas.
