1 And Jacob hearing that food was sold in Egypt, said to his sons: Why are ye careless?	1 Vio Jacob que se repartía grano en Egipto, y dijo Jacob a sus hijos: «¿Por qué os estáis ahí mirando?
2 I have heard that wheat is sold in Egypt: go ye down, and buy us necessaries, that we may live, and not be consumed with want.	2 Yo tengo oído que hay reparto de grano en Egipto. Bajad a comprarnos grano allí, para que vivamos y no muramos.»
3 So the ten brethren of Joseph went down, to buy corn in Egypt:	3 Bajaron, pues, los diez hermanos de José a proveerse de grano en Egipto;
4 Whilst Benjamin was kept at home by Jacob, who said to his brethren: Lest perhaps he take any harm in the journey.	4 pero a Benjamín, hermano de José, no le envió Jacob con sus hermanos, pues se decía: «No vaya a sucederle alguna desgracia.»
5 And they entered into the land of Egypt with others that went to buy. For the famine was in the land of Chanaan.	5 Fueron, pues, los hijos de Israel a comprar con otros que iban, pues había hambre en el país cananeo.
6 And Joseph was governor in the land of Egypt, and corn was sold by his direction to the people. And when his brethren had bowed down to him,	6 José era el que regía en todo el país, y él mismo en persona era el que distribuía grano a todo el mundo. Llegaron los hermanos de José y se inclinaron rostro en tierra.
7 And he knew them, he spoke as it were to strangers somewhat roughly, asking them: Whence came you? They answered: From the land of Chanaan, to buy necessaries of life.	7 Vio José a sus hermanos y los reconoció, pero él no se dio a conocer, y hablándoles con dureza les dijo: «¿De dónde venís?» Dijeron: «De Canaán, para comprar víveres.»
8 And though he knew his brethren, he was not known by them.	8 O sea, que José reconoció a sus hermanos, pero ellos no le reconocieron.
9 And remembering the dreams, which formerly he had dreamed, he said to them: You are spies. You are come to view the weaker parts of the land.	9 José entonces se acordó de aquellos sueños que había soñado respecto a ellos, y les dijo: «Vosotros sois espías, que venís a ver los puntos desguarnecidos del país.»
10 But they said: It is not so, my lord, but thy servants are come to buy food.	10 Dijéronle: «No, señor, sino que tus siervos han venido a proveerse de víveres.
11 We are all the sons of one man: we are come as peaceable men, neither do thy servants go about any evil.	11 Todos nosotros somos hijos de un mismo padre, y somos gente de bien: tus siervos no son espías.»
12 And he answered them: It is otherwise: you are come to consider the unfenced parts of this land.	12 Díjoles: «Nada de eso: a lo que venís es a ver los puntos desguarnecidos del país.»
13 But they said: We thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Chanaan: the youngest is with our father, the other is not living.	13 Dijéronle: «Tus siervos somos doce hermanos, hijos de un mismo padre, en el país cananeo; sólo que el menor está actualmente con nuestro padre, y el otro no existe.»
14 He saith: This is it that I said: You are spies.	14 José replicó: «Lo que yo os dije: sois espías.
15 I shall now presently try what you are: by the health of Pharao you shall not depart hence, until your youngest brother come.	15 Con esto seréis probados, ¡por vida de Faraón!, no saldréis de aquí mientras no venga vuestro hermano pequeño acá.
16 Send one of you to fetch him: and you shall be in prison, till what you have said be proved, whether it be true or false: or else by the health of Pharao you are spies.	16 Enviad a cualquiera de vosotros y que traiga a vuestro hermano, mientras los demás quedáis presos. Así serán comprobadas vuestras afirmaciones, a ver si la verdad está con vosotros. Que si no, ¡por vida de Faraón!, espías sois.»
17 So he put them in prison three days.	17 Y los puso bajo custodia durante tres días.
18 And the third day he brought them out of prison, and said: Do as I have said, and you shall live: for I fear God.	18 Al tercer día les dijo José: «Haced esto - pues yo también temo a Dios - y viviréis.
19 If you be peaceable men, let one of your brethren be bound in prison: and go ye your ways and carry the corn that you have bought, unto your houses.	19 Si sois gente de bien, uno de vuestros hermanos se quedará detenido en la prisión mientras los demás hermanos vais a llevar el grano que tanta falta hace en vuestras casas.
20 And bring your youngest brother to me, that I may find your words to be true, and you may not die. They did as he had said.	20 Luego me traéis a vuestro hermano menor; entonces se verá que son verídicas vuestras palabras y no moriréis.» - Así lo hicieron ellos. -
21 And they talked one to another: We deserve to suffer these things, because we have sinned against our brother, seeing the anguished of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear: therefore is this affliction come upon us.	21 Y se decían el uno al otro: «A fe que somos culpables contra nuestro hermano, cuya angustia veíamos cuando nos pedía que tuviésemos compasión y no le hicimos caso. Por eso nos hallamos en esta angustia.»
22 And Ruben one of them, said: Did not I say to you: Do not sin against the boy: and you would not hear me? Behold his blood is required.	22 Rubén les replicó: «!? Nos os decía yo que no pecarais contra el niño y no me hicisteis caso? ¡Ahora se reclama su sangre!»
23 And they knew not that Joseph understood, because he spoke to them by an interpreter.	23 Ignoraban ellos que José les entendía, porque mediaba un intérprete entre ellos.
24 And he turned himself away a little while, and wept: and returning he spoke to them.	24 Entonces José se apartó de su lado y lloró; y volviendo donde ellos tomó a Simeón y le hizo amarrar a vista de todos.
25 And taking Simeon, and binking him in their presence, he commanded his servants to fill their sacks with wheat, and to put every man's money again in their sacks, and to give them besides provisions for the way: and they did so.	25 Mandó José que se les llenaran los envases de grano, que se devolviera a cada uno su dinero en la talega, y que se les pusiera provisiones para el camino; así se hizo con ellos.
26 But they having loaded their asses with the corn, went their way.	26 Ellos pusieron su cargamento de grano sobre los burros, y se fueron de allí.
27 And one of them opening his sack, to give his beast provender in the inn, saw the money in the sack's mouth;	27 Al ir a hacer noche, uno de ellos abrió su talega para dar pienso a su burro, y vio que su dinero estaba en la boca de la talega de grano.
28 And said to his brethren: My money is given me again, hehold it is in the sack. And thye were astonished, and troubled, and said to one another: What is this that God hath done unto us?	28 Y dijo a sus hermanos: «Me han devuelto el dinero; lo tengo aquí en mi talega.» Se quedaron sin aliento, y se miraban temblando y diciendo: «¿Qué es esto que ha hecho Dios con nosotros?»
29 And they came to Jacob their father in the land of Chanaan, and they told him all things that had befallen them, saying:	29 Llegaron donde su padre, a Canaán, y le manifestaron todas sus aventuras, diciéndole:
30 The lord of the land spoke roughly to us, and took us to be spies of the country.	30 «El hombre que es señor del país ha hablado con nosotros duramente y nos ha tomado por espías del país.
31 And we answered him: We are peaceable men, and we mean no plot.	31 Nosotros le hemos dicho que éramos gente de bien y no espías,
32 We are twelve brethren born of one father: one is not living, the youngest is with our father in the land of Chanaan.	32 que éramos doce hermanos, hijos del mismo padre; que uno de nosotros no existía, y que el otro se encontraba actualmente con nuestro padre en Canaán.
33 And he said to us: Hereby shall I know that you are peaceable men: Leave one of your brethren with me, and take ye necessary provision for your houses, and go your ways.	33 Entonces nos dijo el hombre que es señor del país: “De este modo conoceré si sois gente de bien; dejad conmigo a uno de vosotros, tomad lo que hace falta en vuestras casas y marchaos
34 And bring your youngest brother to me, that I may know you are not spies: and you may receive this man again, that is kept in prison: and afterwards may have leave to buy what you will.	34 a buscarme a vuestro hermano pequeño. Así conoceré que no sois espías, sino gente de bien. Entonces os entregaré a vuestro hermano y circularéis libremente por el país.”»
35 When they had told this, they poured out their corn and every man found his money tied in the mouth of his sack: and all being astonished together,	35 Ahora bien, cuando estaban vaciando sus talegas, he aquí que cada uno tenía su dinero en la talega, y tanto ellos como su padre, al ver las bolsas, sintieron miedo.
36 Their father Jacob said: You have made me to be without children: Joseph is not living, Simeon is kept in bonds, and Benjamin you will take away: all these evils are fallen upon me.	36 Su padre Jacob les dijo: «Me dejáis sin hijos: Falta José, falta Simeón, y encima vais a quitarme a Benjamín. Esto acabará conmigo.»
37 And Ruben answered him: Kill my two sons if I bring him not again to thee: deliver him unto my hand, and I will restore him to thee.	37 Dijo Rubén a su padre: «Que mueran mis dos hijos si no te lo traemos. Confíalo a mí y yo te lo devolveré.»
38 But he said: My son shall not go down with you: his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if any mischief befall him in the land to which you go, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to hell.	38 Replicó: «No bajará mi hijo con vosotros, pues su hermano está muerto y sólo me queda él. Si le ocurre cualquier desgracia en ese viaje que vais a hacer, entonces haríais bajar mi vejez con pena al seol.»
