1 ¿Y qué diremos de Abraham, nuestro padre según la carne?	1 So then, what shall we say that Abraham had achieved, who is our father according to the flesh?
2 Si él hubiera sido justificado por las obras tendría de qué gloriarse, pero no delante de Dios.	2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he would have glory, but not with God.
3 Porque, ¿qué dice la Escritura?: Abraham creyó en Dios y esto le fue tenido en cuenta para su justificación.	3 For what does Scripture say? “Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.”
4 Ahora bien, al que trabaja no se le da el salario como un regalo, sino como algo que se le debe.	4 But for he who works, wages are not accounted according to grace, but according to debt.
5 Pero al que no hace nada, sino que cree en aquel que justifica al impío, se le tiene en cuenta la fe para su justificación.	5 Yet truly, for he who does not work, but who believes in him who justifies the impious, his faith is reputed unto justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God.
6 Por eso David proclama la felicidad de aquel a quien Dios confiere la justicia sin las obras, diciendo:	6 Similarly, David also declares the blessedness of a man, to whom God brings justice without works:
7 "Felices aquellos a quienes fueron perdonadas sus faltas y cuyos pecados han sido cubiertos.	7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered.
8 Feliz el hombre a quien Dios no le tiene en cuenta su pecado".	8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord has not imputed sin.”
9 Pero esta felicidad, ¿es únicamente para los que han sido circuncidados, o también para los que no lo han sido? Consideremos lo que ya dijimos: A Abraham le fue tenida en cuenta la fe para su justificación.	9 Does this blessedness, then, remain only in the circumcised, or is it even in the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was reputed to Abraham unto justice.
10 ¿Cuando le fue tenida en cuenta? ¿Antes o después de la circuncisión? Evidentemente antes y no después.	10 But then how was it reputed? In circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 Y él recibió el signo de la circuncisión, como sello de la justicia que alcanzó por medio de la fe, antes de ser circuncidado. Así llegó a ser padre de aquellos que, a pesar de no estar circuncidados, tienen la fe que les es tenida en cuenta para su justificación.	11 For he received the sign of circumcision as a symbol of the justice of that faith which exists apart from circumcision, so that he might be the father of all those who believe while uncircumcised, so that it might also be reputed to them unto justice,
12 Y es también padre de los que se circuncidan pero no se contentan con esto, sino que siguen el mismo camino de la fe que tuvo nuestro padre Abraham, antes de ser circuncidado.	12 and he might be the father of circumcision, not only for those who are of circumcision, but even for those who follow the footsteps of that faith which is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.
13 En efecto, la promesa de recibir el mundo en herencia, hecha a Abraham y a su posteridad, no le fue concedida en virtud de la Ley, sino por la justicia que procede de la fe.	13 For the Promise to Abraham, and to his posterity, that he would inherit the world, was not through the law, but through the justice of faith.
14 Porque si la herencia pertenece a los que están bajo la Ley, la fe no tiene objeto y la promesa carece de valor,	14 For if those who are of the law are the heirs, then faith becomes empty and the Promise is abolished.
15 ya que la Ley provoca la ira y donde no hay Ley tampoco hay transgresión.	15 For the law works unto wrath. And where there is no law, there is no law-breaking.
16 Por eso, la herencia se obtiene por medio de la fe, a fin de que esa herencia sea gratuita y la promesa quede asegurada para todos los descendientes de Abraham, no sólo los que lo son por la Ley, sino también los que lo son por la fe. Porque él es nuestro padre común	16 Because of this, it is from faith according to grace that the Promise is ensured for all posterity, not only for those who are of the law, but also for those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all before God,
17 como dice la Escritura: ""Te he constituido padre de muchas naciones". Abraham es nuestro padre a los ojos de aquel en quien creyó: el Dios que da vida a los muertos y llama a la existencia a las cosas que no existen.	17 in whom he believed, who revives the dead and who calls those things that do not exist into existence. For it is written: “I have established you as the father of many nations.”
18 Esperando contra toda esperanza, Abraham creyó y llegó a ser padre de muchas naciones, como se le había anunciado: Así será tu descendencia.	18 And he believed, with a hope beyond hope, so that he might become the father of many nations, according to what was said to him: “Thus shall your posterity shall be.”
19 Su fe no flaqueó, al considerar que su cuerpo estaba como muerto –era casi centenario– y que también lo estaba el seno de Sara.	19 And he was not weakened in faith, nor did he consider his own body to be dead (though he was then almost one hundred years old), nor the womb of Sarah to be dead.
20 El no dudó de la promesa de Dios, por falta de fe, sino al contrario, fortalecido por esa fe, glorificó a Dios,	20 And then, in the Promise of God, he did not hesitate out of distrust, but instead he was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
21 plenamente convencido de que Dios tiene poder para cumplir lo que promete.	21 knowing most fully that whatever God has promised, he is also able to accomplish.
22 Por eso, la fe le fue tenida en cuenta para su justificación.	22 And for this reason, it was reputed to him unto justice.
23 Pero cuando dice la Escritura: "Dios tuvo en cuenta su fe", no se refiere únicamente a Abraham, sino también a nosotros,	23 Now this has been written, that it was reputed to him unto justice, not only for his sake,
24 que tenemos fe en aquel que resucitó a nuestro Señor Jesús,	24 but also for our sake. For the same shall be reputed to us, if we believe in him who raised up our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead,
25 el cual fue entregado por nuestros pecados y resucitado para nuestra justificación.	25 who was handed over because of our offenses, and who rose again for our justification.
