Hechos de los Apóstoles 13

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 En la Iglesia de Antioquía había profetas y doctores, entre los cuales estaban Bernabé y Simeón, llamado el Negro, Lucio de Cirene, Manahén, amigo de infancia del tetrarca Herodes, y Saulo.	1 In the church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon cal ed Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 Un día, mientras celebraban el culto del Señor y ayunaban, el Espíritu Santo les dijo: «Resérvenme a Saulo y a Bernabé para la obra a la cual los he llamado».	2 One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, 'I wantBarnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have cal ed them.'
3 Ellos, después de haber ayunado y orado, les impusieron las manos y los despidieron.	3 So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
4 Saulo y Bernabé, enviados por el Espíritu Santo, fueron a Seleucia y de allí se embarcaron para Chipre.	4 So these two, sent on their mission by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there set sail forCyprus.
5 Al llegar a Salamina anunciaron la Palabra de Dios en las sinagogas de los judíos, y Juan colaboraba con ellos.	5 They landed at Salamis and proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; John acted astheir assistant.
6 Recorrieron toda la isla y llegaron hasta Pafos, donde encontraron a un mago judío llamado Barjesús, que se hacía pasar por profeta	6 They travel ed the whole length of the island, and at Paphos they came in contact with a Jewishmagician and false prophet cal ed Bar-Jesus.
7 y estaba vinculado al procónsul Sergio Pablo, hombre de gran prudencia. Este hizo llamar a Bernabé y a Saulo, porque deseaba escuchar la Palabra de Dios.	7 He was one of the attendants of the proconsul Sergius Paulus, who was an extremely intelligent man.The proconsul summoned Barnabas and Saul and asked to hear the word of God,
8 Pero los discípulos chocaron con la oposición de Barjesús –llamado Elimas, que significa mago– el cual quería impedir que el procónsul abrazara la fe.	8 but Elymas the magician (this is what his name means in Greek) tried to stop them so as to prevent theproconsul's conversion to the faith.
9 Saulo, llamado también Pablo, lleno del Espíritu Santo, clavó los ojos en él,	9 Then Saul, whose other name is Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked at him intently
10 y le dijo: «Hombre falso y lleno de maldad, hijo del demonio, enemigo de la justicia, ¿cuándo dejarás de torcer los rectos caminos del Señor?	10 and said, 'You utter fraud, you impostor, you son of the devil, you enemy of al uprightness, will younot stop twisting the straightforward ways of the Lord?
11 Ahora la mano del Señor va a caer sobre ti: quedarás ciego y privado por un tiempo de la luz del sol». En ese mismo momento, se vio envuelto en oscuridad y tinieblas, y andaba a tientas buscando a alguien que le tendiera la mano.	11 Now watch how the hand of the Lord wil strike you: you wil be blind, and for a time you wil not seethe sun.' That instant, everything went misty and dark for him, and he groped about to find someone to lead himby the hand.
12 Al ver lo que había sucedido, el procónsul, profundamente impresionado por la doctrina del Señor, abrazó la fe.	12 The proconsul, who had watched everything, became a believer, being much struck by what he hadlearnt about the Lord.
13 Desde Pafos, donde se embarcaron, Pablo y sus compañeros llegaron a Perge de Panfilia. Juan se separó y volvió a Jerusalén,	13 Paul and his companions went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to goback to Jerusalem.
14 pero ellos continuaron su viaje, y de Perge fueron a Antioquía de Pisidia. El sábado entraron en la sinagoga y se sentaron.	14 The others carried on from Perga til they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue onthe Sabbath and took their seats.
15 Después de la lectura de la Ley y de los Profetas, los jefes de la sinagoga les mandaron a decir: «Hermanos, si tienen que dirigir al pueblo alguna exhortación, pueden hablar».	15 After the passages from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagoguesent them a message, 'Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation,please do so.'
16 Entonces Pablo se levantó y, pidiendo silencio con un gesto, dijo: «Escúchenme, israelitas y todos los que temen a Dios.	16 Paul stood up, raised his hand for silence and began to speak: 'Men of Israel, and fearers of God,listen!
17 El Dios de Este Pueblo, el Dios de Israel, eligió a nuestros padres y los convirtió en un gran Pueblo, cuando todavía vivían como extranjeros en Egipto. Luego, con el poder de su brazo, los hizo salir de allí	17 The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors and made our people great when they were living inEgypt, a land not their own; then by divine power he led them out
18 y los cuidó durante cuarenta años en el desierto.	18 and for about forty years took care of them in the desert.
19 Después, en el país de Canaán, destruyó a siete naciones y les dio en posesión sus tierras,	19 When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land
20 al cabo de unos cuatrocientos cincuenta años. A continuación, les dio Jueces hasta el profeta Samuel.	20 for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel.
21 Pero ellos pidieron un rey y Dios les dio a Saúl, hijo de Quis, de la tribu de Benjamín, por espacio de cuarenta años.	21 Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin.After forty years,
22 Y cuando Dios desechó a Saúl, les suscitó como rey a David, de quien dio este testimonio: He encontrado en David, el hijo de Jesé, a un hombre conforme a mi corazón que cumplirá siempre mi voluntad.	22 he deposed him and raised up David to be king, whom he attested in these words, "I have foundDavid son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who wil perform my entire wil ."
23 De la descendencia de David, como lo había prometido, Dios hizo surgir para Israel un Salvador, que es Jesús.	23 To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour,
24 Como preparación a su venida, Juan había predicado un bautismo de penitencia a todo el pueblo de Israel.	24 whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the wholepeople of Israel.
25 Y al final de su carrera, Juan decía: «Yo no soy el que ustedes creen, pero sepan que después de mí viene aquel a quien yo no soy digno de desatar las sandalias».	25 Before John ended his course he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; there is someonecoming after me whose sandal I am not fit to undo."
26 Hermanos, este mensaje de salvación está dirigido a ustedes: los descendientes de Abraham y los que temen a Dios.	26 'My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and al you godfearers, this message of salvation is meant foryou.
27 En efecto, la gente de Jerusalén y sus jefes no reconocieron a Jesús, ni entendieron las palabras de los profetas que se leen cada sábado, pero las cumplieron sin saberlo, condenado a Jesús.	27 What the people of Jerusalem and their rulers did, though they did not realise it, was in f
28 Aunque no encontraron nada en él que mereciera la muerte, pidieron a Pilato que lo condenara.	28 Though they found nothing to justify his execution, they condemned him and asked Pilate to have himput to death.
29 Después de cumplir todo lo que estaba escrito de él, lo bajaron del patíbulo y lo pusieron en el sepulcro.	29 When they had carried out everything that scripture foretells about him they took him down from thetree and buried him in a tomb.
30 Pero Dios lo resucitó de entre los muertos	30 But God raised him from the dead,
31 y durante un tiempo se apareció a los que habían subido con él de Galilea a Jerusalén, los mismos que ahora son sus testigos delante del pueblo.	31 and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and itis these same companions of his who are now his witnesses before our people.
32 Y nosotros les anunciamos a ustedes esta Buena Noticia: la promesa que Dios hizo a nuestros padres,	32 'We have come here to tel you the good news that the promise made to our ancestors has comeabout.
33 fue cumplida por él en favor de sus hijos, que somos nosotros, resucitando a Jesús, como está escrito en el Salmo segundo: Tú eres mi Hijo; yo te he engendrado hoy.	33 God has fulfil ed it to their children by raising Jesus from the dead. As scripture says in the psalms: You are my son: today I have fathered you.
34 Que Dios lo ha resucitado de entre los muertos y que no habrá de someterse a la corrupción, es lo que el mismo Dios ha declarado diciendo: Cumpliré las santas promesas hechas a David, aquellas que no pueden fallar.	34 The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to return to corruption, is no more than what hehad declared: To you I shal give the holy things promised to David which can be relied upon.
35 Por eso también dice en otro pasaje: No permitirás que tu Santo sufra la corrupción.	35 This is also why it says in another text: You wil not al ow your Holy One to see corruption.
36 Sin embargo David, después de haber cumplido la voluntad de Dios en su tiempo, murió, fue a reunirse con sus padres y sufrió la corrupción.	36 Now when David in his own time had served God's purposes he died; he was buried with hisancestors and has certainly seen corruption.
37 Pero aquel a quien Dios resucitó no sufrió la corrupción.	37 The one whom God has raised up, however, has not seen corruption.
38 Ustedes deben saber que la remisión de los pecados les ha sido anunciada por él. Y la justificación que ustedes no podían alcanzar por la Ley de Moisés, gracias a él,	38 'My brothers, I want you to realise that it is through him that forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed toyou. Through him justification from al sins from which the Law of Moses was unable to justify
39 la alcanza todo el que cree.	39 is being offered to every believer.
40 Tengan cuidado de que no les suceda lo que dijeron los profetas:	40 'So be careful -- or what the prophets say wil happen to you.
41 "¡Ustedes, los que desprecian, llénense de estupor y ocúltense! Porque en estos días voy a realizar algo, que si alguien lo contara no lo podrían creer"».	41 Cast your eyes around you, mockers; be amazed, and perish! For I am doing something in your owndays that you would never believe if you were told of it.'
42 A la salida, les pidieron que retomaran el mismo tema el sábado siguiente.	42 As they left they were urged to continue this preaching the fol owing Sabbath.
43 Cuando se disolvió la asamblea, muchos judíos y prosélitos que adoraban a Dios siguieron a Pablo y a Bernabé. Estos conversaban con ellos, exhortándolos a permanecer fieles a la gracia de Dios.	43 When the meeting broke up many Jews and devout converts fol owed Paul and Barnabas, and in theirtalks with them Paul and Barnabas urged them to remain faithful to the grace God had given them.
44 Casi toda la ciudad se reunió el sábado siguiente para escuchar la Palabra de Dios.	44 The next Sabbath almost the whole town assembled to hear the word of God.
45 Al ver esa multitud, los judíos se llenaron de envidia y con injurias contradecían las palabras de Pablo.	45 When they saw the crowds, the Jews, fil ed with jealousy, used blasphemies to contradict everythingPaul said.
46 Entonces Pablo y Bernabé, con gran firmeza, dijeron: «A ustedes debíamos anunciar en primer lugar la Palabra de Dios, pero ya que la rechazan y no se consideran dignos de la Vida eterna, nos dirigimos ahora a los paganos.	46 Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out fearlessly. 'We had to proclaim the word of God to you first, butsince you have rejected it, since you do not think yourselves worthy of eternal life, here and now we turn to thegentiles.
47 Así nos ha ordenado el Señor: "Yo te he establecido para ser la luz de las naciones, para llevar la salvación hasta los confines de la tierra"».	47 For this is what the Lord commanded us to do when he said: I have made you a light to the nations,so that my salvation may reach the remotest parts of the earth.'
48 Al oír esto, los paganos, llenos de alegría, alabaron la Palabra de Dios, y todos los que estaban destinados a la vida eterna abrazaron la fe.	48 It made the gentiles very happy to hear this and they gave thanks to the Lord for his message; all whowere destined for eternal life became believers.
49 Así la Palabra del Señor se iba extendiendo por toda la región.	49 Thus the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.
50 Pero los judíos instigaron a unas mujeres piadosas que pertenecían a la aristocracia y a los principales de la ciudad, provocando una persecución contra Pablo y Bernabé, y los echaron de su territorio.	50 But the Jews worked on some of the devout women of the upper classes and the leading men of thecity; they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expel ed them from their territory.
51 Estos, sacudiendo el polvo de sus pies en señal de protesta contra ellos, se dirigieron a Iconio.	51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went off to Iconium; but theconverts were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
52 Los discípulos, por su parte, quedaron llenos de alegría y del Espíritu Santo.
