Job 15

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Elifaz de Temán replicó, diciendo:	1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite spoke and said:
2 ¿Acaso un sabio da respuestas en el aire y llena de viento su interior?	2 Should a wise man answer with airy opinions, or puff himself up with wind?
3 ¿Arguye con palabras inútiles y con discursos que no sirven de nada?	3 Should he argue in speech which does not avail, and in words which are to no profit?
4 ¡Más aún, tú destruyes la piedad, y anulas la reflexión delante de Dios!	4 You in fact do away with piety, and you lessen devotion toward God,
5 Porque es tu culpa la que inspira tus palabras y eliges el lenguaje de la gente astuta.	5 Because your wickedness instructs your mouth, and you choose to speak like the crafty.
6 Tu misma boca te condena, no yo; tus propios labios atestiguan contra ti.	6 Your own mouth condemns you, not I; you own lips refute you.
7 ¿Eres tú el primer hombre que nació? ¿Fuiste dado a luz antes que las colinas?	7 Are you indeed the first-born of mankind, or were you brought forth before the hills?
8 ¿Has tenido acceso al consejo divino y has acaparado la sabiduría?	8 Are you privy to the counsels of God, and do you restrict wisdom to yourself?
9 ¿Qué sabes tú que nosotros no sepamos? ¿Qué entiendes tú más que nosotros?	9 What do you know that we do not know? What intelligence have you which we have not?
10 Aquí también hay ancianos de cabellos blancos, gente de más edad que tu mismo padre.	10 There are gray-haired old men among us more advanced in years than your father.
11 ¿No te basta el consuelo que Dios te da y una palabra pronunciada con dulzura?	11 Are the consolations of God not enough for you, and speech that deals gently with you?
12 ¿Por qué te dejas arrastrar por tus impulsos? ¿Qué significan esos ojos huraños,	12 Why do your notions carry you away, and why do your eyes blink,
13 cuando vuelves tu saña contra Dios y lanzas denuestos por la boca?	13 So that you turn your anger against God and let such words escape your mouth!
14 ¿Qué es el hombre para que sea puro y el nacido de mujer para que sea justo?	14 What is a man that he should be blameless, one born of woman that he should be righteous?
15 Si Dios no se fía ni siquiera de sus santos y el cielo no es puro a sus ojos.	15 If in his holy ones God places no confidence, and if the heavens are not clean in his sight,
16 ¡cuánto menos ese ser abominable y corrompido, el hombre, que bebe como agua la iniquidad!	16 How much less so is the abominable, the corrupt: man, who drinks in iniquity like water!
17 Yo te voy a explicar, escúchame; déjame contarte algo que vi.	17 I will show you, if you listen to me; what I have seen I will tell--
18 Es lo que refieren los sabios, lo que no les ocultaron sus padres:	18 What wise men relate and have not contradicted since the days of their fathers,
19 a ellos solos les fue dada la tierra y ningún extraño pasaba en medio de ellos.	19 To whom alone the land was given, when no foreigner moved among them.
20 El malvado se atormenta todos los días de su vida, muy pocos años están reservados al hombre cruel;	20 The wicked man is in torment all his days, and limited years are in store for the tyrant;
21 voces horribles resuenan en sus oídos, en plena paz, lo asalta el devastador.	21 The sound of terrors is in his ears; when all is prosperous, the spoiler comes upon him.
22 El no espera evadirse de las tinieblas y está destinado a la espada.	22 He despairs of escaping the darkness, and looks ever for the sword;
23 Anda errante como pasto de los buitres y sabe que su ruina es segura. El día tenebroso	23 A wanderer, food for the vultures, he knows that his destruction is imminent.
24 lo aterra, la angustia y la opresión lo acometen, como un rey preparado para el ataque.	24 By day the darkness fills him with dread; distress and anguish overpower him.
25 Porque extendía su mano contra Dios y se envalentonaba contra el Todopoderoso:	25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God and bade defiance to the Almighty,
26 arremetía contra él con el cuello tendido, con todo el espesor de sus escudos blindados,	26 One shall rush sternly upon him with the stout bosses of his shield, like a king prepared for the charge.
27 porque había untado su rostro con grasa y había robustecido sus lomos.	27 Because he has blinded himself with his crassness, padding his loins with fat,
28 Ahora habita en ciudades destruidas, en casas donde ya nadie vive, que amenazan convertirse en escombros.	28 He shall dwell in ruinous cities, in houses that are deserted, That are crumbling into clay
29 El no se enriquecerá, no durará su fortuna, ni sus posesiones se extenderán por el país.	29 with no shadow to lengthen over the ground. He shall not be rich, and his possessions shall not endure;
30 No escapará de las tinieblas, una llama secará sus retoños, su flor será arrastrada por el viento.	30 A flame shall wither him up in his early growth, and with the wind his blossoms shall disappear.
31 Que no confíe en la mentira, porque se equivoca, y su recompensa será la decepción.	31 for vain shall be his bartering.
32 Su follaje se marchitará antes de tiempo y su ramaje no mantendrá su verdor.	32 His stalk shall wither before its time, and his branches shall be green no more.
33 Como una vid, perderá sus uvas todavía agrias, como un olivo dejará caer sus flores.	33 He shall be like a vine that sheds its grapes unripened, and like an olive tree casting off its bloom.
34 Sí, la raza del impío es estéril, el fuego devora la carpa del hombre venal.	34 For the breed of the impious shall be sterile, and fire shall consume the tents of extortioners.
35 El que concibe malicia, engendra maldad, y su vientre está grávido de mentira.	35 They conceive malice and bring forth emptiness; they give birth to failure.
